Dear Boathouse volunteer
We have decided to close the 72nd St. dock for the rest of the 2007
season. We are having trouble getting enough volunteers to keep all
our locations open, last weekend Pier 96 was again closed in the
morning because we didn.t have enough people. We are contractually
obligated by the Trust to keep Pier 40 and Pier 96 open, and we are
going to focus on them for the remainder of the season. If you
usually volunteer at 72nd St. Please come down to Pier 96 and help
instead.
Pier 96 and Pier 40 are open through 10/14.

This Monday 10/8 is the Columbus Day holiday, and both Pier 40 and
Pier 96 will be open on a regular weekend schedule. With all this
warm weather we should be very busy, so please come down and help
if you can.

Taino will be running a BCU 2-star assessment this Saturday 10/6 at the
Pier 96 Boathouse. The BCU certification program features training
sessions where the strokes are taught and practiced, and an assessment
(test). On Saturday 10/6 we are only doing the assessment. You should
only sign-up for the assessment if you have been to several training
sessions, and have been practicing the strokes.
You can read about the BCU award system on the BCU website:

**************************
At the beginning of the 2007 season we instituted a policy of no
rolling or bracing practice in Downtown Boathouse boats, except under
the direct on-site supervision of one of our BCU certified coaches
(Taino, or Tim). We also instituted a policy of no peer training of
bracing or rolling, even in private boats. We instituted this policy
to prevent shoulder injuries. In 2006 we had 3 serious shoulder injuries
due to improper bracing technique, so far in 2007 we have had none. Please
pay attention to this important safety requirement. If you want to learn
these advanced strokes you should enroll in one of our BCU classes or in
a class giving by one of the commercial operators mentioned in the
links. page on the Boathouse website.
