Dear Boathouse volunteer
**************************
As it is getting darker earlier and earlier we are going suspend the volunteer
paddles for this week. as they would now be leaving in the dark. After the
weekday evening program ends, (September 14th is the last day) We will resume
volunteer paddles on tuesdays. With a launch time of 5:00PM There will be no
more weekend, post program volunteer paddles. After the Public Program ends
there may be a few weekend trips organized if the weather is good and the water
is still warm.
**************************
There is a new version of Authorized Boat User List Published in the Log Book.
Again, It has to be emphasized that you do NOT need to be on this list to go on
Public trips or official volunteer trips. An official volunteer trip is either
the scheduled trips or will be announced in these emails. Being on the
authorized List means you are permitted to take a boathouse boat out of the
ebayment with at least one other authorized user. It is recommended that you
should really go out in groups of 3 or more. You are NOT allowed to take a
boathouse boat out of the ebayment by alone! It is also expected that people
behave responsibly and safely on the river, being mindful of traffic, currents
and weather and other factors that can affect conditions on the river.

Taino, fresh back paddling around Puerto Rico, sill be running a refresher BCU
1 Star/2 Star class on Saturday September 15th at 9AM. This is a REFRESHER
course aimed at those who did he BCU classes earlier in the summer. It is not
the full training. This should NOT be your first BCU class.
Taino will be doing BCU assessment for the 1 and 2 star awards on Saturday,
October 6th at 9AM.
A reminder from Taino:
"Please tell those who want to take the test there is a practical and
verbal part to the exam.
Have them download syllabus from:
http://www.bcuna.com/pages/Main-Pages/Literature.shtml.
They should download 1*Thu 3* syllabus, same file. They only need to
know 1*star and 2*Star information. But they can read the whole
booklet it's small.
I will do a 2*star assessment on Saturday October 6th at 9:00AM
If they have any questions feel free to approach me and ask or those
who have 2*star and above can answer questions which will help them on
the test.
Again remember that is is being done for free for the benefit of the
DTBH so we have better trained volunteer staff which should pass this
along to others."

A Roshashana (Jewish New Year) Tashlik ceremony will take place at 5:30pm on
Saturday September 15th in the waters off of the
gazebo on the shoreline park just south of the Pier 96 boathouse. The
ceremony involves ritual Hebrew prayers and a casting of the year's sins
into the waters in the form of bread crumbs which will then be washed away
with the outgoing tide. Those who wish to participate via kayak must
arrive no later than 5pm to get kitted out in a boat. The ceremony will be
ecumenical and open to all DTBH volunteers and the general public.

CIBBOWS and The Downtown Boathouse are joining the American Literal Society for
a clean-up of Plumb Beach this coming Saturday September 15th at 10 AM.
After the clean-up a number of us will be going for a short paddle, maybe out to
Breezy Point for some kayak surfing. Warning: The tides aren't going to be great
for surf, so there might not be any.
You need to have a car to get out here, there is no subway access, and we aren't
bringing the trailer.
Please contact Tim Gamble directly for more information.

Transportation/ Directions
You can only access the turn-off from the Eastbound side of the Belt.
1. Get on the Belt Parkway going East. Go past all the Coney Island Exits, and
also past the Exit to Sheepshead Bay.
2. The turn-off for Plumb beach is marked "Rest Area" it doesn't actually say
Plumb beach.
3. If you get to the gas station in the middle of the Belt Parkway, you went too
far, turn around in the Gas Station and go back.

Please try and buy a ticket and attend the Gowanus Dredgers Annual fundraising
party on Thursday 9/20. The party will be at their launch site in Carroll
Gardens Brooklyn.
I have been to the last two parties and they were both great. It's only $25 to
get in, and that includes beer and a really nice dinner. They have two bands
scheduled, and LOTS of chances to win great prizes. Last year I won a really
nice Patagonia Travel Bag.
The Dredgers are doing a great job of bringing free kayaking and canoeing to
Brooklyn, just like the Boathouse does in Manhattan.
Check out the official invite at:
http://www.gowanuscanal.org/
Click on the "Don't miss our bacChanal Party link to buy tickets. You must buy
your tickets ahead of time, otherwise the price goes way way up.
Despite the name, "Bacchanal 2007" this is a kid friendly event. Typically a lot
of families come early ~ 5:00PM for face paining, entertainment by Billy Bones
the Pirate, and canoe rides. It gets quite a bit more rocking later in the
evening, when the music starts and it gets dark.

On Friday, September 21, a group of school kids are coming to go out on a short
trip during the day. If you want to help meet at the Boathouse at 11:30, we will
start paddling at 12:00, and be back by 2:00PM.

On October 14th The Mayors Cup Race takes place. This is a race around
Manhattan.
for more information see
http://www.nymayorscup.com/
Last year no one from the boathouse competed. the winning time was 3:21:28 So
that is what you are up against!
The race is part of a bigger even called the New York Waterfest.
On of the events is called the Big Splash Hudson river Float. This is a series
of large inflatable river rafts that go down the hudson. They will launch from
our Pier 96 location. The rafts will arrive, be inflated and put the water and
then loaded with passengers. This typically takes place along the south side of
the boathouse, and they launch of the end of the main dock. October 14th is the
last day of our public program so we should be open and welcoming.
