Dear Boathouse volunteer

On Saturday August 18th we will have our annual party, the Harrison St. Regatta.
We will be setting up at 1PM
There is a race at 2:00PM, Starting at Pier 96, followed by a BBQ in
the park at 72nd St. This is always a lot of fun, so please put it on your
schedule now. We may need some people to help out with some of the preparation
and cooking. Let me know if you would like to help.

Also on the 18th there is going to to be a group of kids coming with some
salvation army volunteers. They are coming at 9AM. and will probably be gone by
10:30. We will be running our normal public program in the morning at the same
time We will just set aside 4 or 5 doubles for them. There will be more adults
than children. If you can be at Pier 96 at 9AM to help, please do.

Please mark your calendar. The Portside Group in Red Hook Brooklyn is
running their 2nd annual Kayak Valet event. See:

http://www.portsidenewyork.org/KayakValet.htm
Sat, 9/8/07 Rain date Sun 9/9/07

The idea is that you can paddle down to Red Hook, and leave your boats to
enjoy the neighborhood. We had a lot of fun last year.

Free kayak rides by the Red Hook Boaters http://www.redhookboaters.org/.
Safety Boat provided by Launch 5 http://launch5.com/

There is no need to sign-up. If you have questions you can email portside
or me. I'll be there for the morning with the Red Hook Boaters doing our
free kayaking program.

On Saturday August 25th There is a swim leaving pier 96 for the little Red
Light House, under the George Washington Bridge. They will be setting up around
3PM and starting the race at 4:15PM. This will happen while our public program
is open. More details to follow

The Boathouse has come in possession of a Trak kayak. See
http://www.rethinkkayak.com/ for details about this boat. It is not actually our
boat. It is on permanent load from the manufacturer. I encourage anyone who is
comfortable in a deck boat to try paddling the boat in the boathouse ebayment.
There are some issues to be aware of with the boat. It is a fairly tippy boat by
boathouse standards. As this boat has no bulkheads it must NEVER be taken
without the front and rear flotation bags in place and inflated. Check these
before taking the boat house. This boat has limited reserve buoyancy so it is
almost impossible to empty on the water if it becomes flooded. It is also a
fragile boat. It is NOT to be used for any rescue practice

**************************
Friends on Hudson River Park is doing Shakespeare plays at 1PM and 5PM on Pier
95, the little River get down south of the boathouse. They will be doing this
this weekend and next. They are leaving so of their props in the the Parks
department office so they need to access the office at 11AM and again at 7:30 on
Saturday and Sunday. If anyone is in the boathouse at these hours please allow
them access the the parks office in the south east corner of the boathouse.
