Tim Gamble writes:

I'm writing to ask for your help to provide kayak support for the upcoming
CIBBOWS race on August 5th.
The race is a 1 mile swim race along the beach in Coney Island. You can read
about CIBBOWS and the race at:
http://www.cibbows.org/races/2007.html
This group is not affiliated with the Manhattan Island Foundation that runs the
races in the Hudson River.
This is an easy race to support. It is just a 1 mile course along the beach. You
need to be comfortable in your kayak, and able to control it, but advanced
skills are not required.
If you want to help please let me know. I especially need people who can bring
their own boats via car. I may be able to get a trailer to bring boats from the
Downtown Boathouse, but I'm not sure.

Let me know if you can drive yourself, or you need a ride.
We will launch from 2 separate locations:
1)Plumb beach off the Belt Parkway. Meet at 06:30, launch at 07:00.
2)On the beach at the Start in Brighton Beach, meet at 07:30, launch at 08:00.
Because it is Sunday there is free parking available at the start, and parking
is always free at Plumb Beach.
After the race a number of us plan to spend the morning and early afternoon
paddling out to Breezy Point, maybe doing a little surfing.
CIBBOWS will supply breakfast. I will supply a gourmet lunch for anyone who
wants to do the Breezy Pt paddle.

Thanks!

Tim...

We have purchased 3 cellphones for use at each of the 3 Boathouses.
These are pre-paid phones, with a limited amount of expensive minutes on them.
Please only use them to call from Boathouse to Boathouse, and if you have your
own cellphone with free weekend minutes use that to place the outbound call
instead. If you are working at one of the Boathouses, and need something, or
need more volunteers please try to call one of the other Boathouses. We often
have extra staff at Pier 96, and we are often understaffed at Pier 40 and 72nd
St.

Pier 96 646-549-9015
72nd St. 646-595-7608
Pier 40 646-269-2974

We have started two weekly sunset volunteer paddles, on Tuesdays and Sundays
after we close the public programs. These leave from Pier 96. While all (old and
new) volunteers from all locations are welcome, these paddles are aimed
primarily for volunteers who have little or no deck boat experience or who have
never been out on the river. TheyÕre meant to be easy, relaxed paddles of
1-1.5hrs, led by more experienced volunteers. If youÕve never been in a deck
boat or done a wet exit and want to go on one of these trips, please plan to ask
a more experienced volunteer or the dock master to show you the basics sometime
before the tripÑeither during the public program earlier in the week/weekend or
come early enough (at least a couple of hours) before the trip to get
comfortable in a deck boat and with wet exits. Trips will leave no later than
7pm so plan to be there by 6:30 to get and dress your boat (earlier if youÕve
never been in one). We should be back by sunset. Please bring
a waterproof flashlight, a change of clothes, and a light jacket. If youÕre
an experienced paddler, please consider volunteering on the trip to assist your
new fellow volunteers as they get their sea legs.

Thanks
Jeremy Hooper
