Dear Boathouse Volunteer,
We are researching moving our volunteer email program to gmail. You may
receive an email from google telling you, you have been subscribed to a
new google group. We will continue to keep your name and contact details
private, we are just using google to host the mailing list. Nobody can
see your email or email you, just the Boathouse Officers. Please watch for
the email.
One of the questions we get asked a lot is, How can new volunteers help?
The answer is to just come to any of the locations, and introduce yourself.
No special training or skills are required. You just need to be friendly,
and willing to learn. If you are an experienced volunteer, and a new
person comes in, please make them feel welcome and show them around.
As a new volunteer be sure to try all the different locations. They are
all very different both in atmosphere, the work that needs to be done,
and the pace of the program.
We are holding some more new volunteer introductions. These are just
30 minute sessions where new people can hear from the experts sort of
soup-to-nuts on all the programs and procedures. It.s not necessary to
come to one of these sessions. If you can.t make it, we still need your
help.
The new volunteer sessions will be held at the Pier 96 location on the
following times:
Saturday July 7 at 12:00PM
Saturday August 4 at 12:00PM
We are open July 4 at all locations just like a regular weekend day. We
will also be running a trip from Pier 96.
We are still a little short staffed at all our locations, particularly
Pier 40 and 72nd St. If you have been wanting to come and help now is
a good time. We are very busy because the weather has been so warm.
Our next monthly meeting is Tuesday July 2nd. At 6:30PM. Come at 6:00
to catch-up with friends, the meeting will be called to order at 6:30PM.
We are doing some special kids programs during the weekdays on the
following dates and times. They will be trips or embayment paddling,
or a mixture of both. If you have some time during the week, please
come and help:
7/12 1:00 PM
7/17 10:00 AM
If you are a regular volunteer you are welcome and encouraged to go
on the morning trips as an assistant trip leader. You don.t need to
enter the lottery to be an assistant trip leader. You need to be
comfortable paddling a decked kayak for over 3 hours. If you have
never been in a decked kayak before be sure to practice after one of
your volunteer work sessions in the embayment, before going on the trip.
Also be sure you have done a wet exit and rescued another swamped kayak.
The best time to try the decked kayaks is anyday after the morning
trip returns, usually about 12:00PM. Just ask the trip leader to spend
a few minutes and go over the basics with you, then you can practice on
your own.
The morning trips are a great way to build-up your skills in a safe
controlled environment with expert advice from our trip leaders,
and like everything at the Boathouse, it's fun too.
You are receiving this email because you asked to be placed on the
email mailing list for the Downtown Boathouse. If you no longer wish to
receive these emails please send a note to volunteer@...
