Dear Boathouse Volunteer.

Our new season starts this Saturday May 12. Please come down to
any of our locations to help-out whenever you have time. Check
the website for exact opening and closing hours. We don't open
on the weekdays, or run the morning trips until June 15.

New volunteers are welcome anytime. Just come down to any of the
locations, tell the people who are working that you are a new
volunteer, and they will show you the ropes.

There was a very large sewage spill in Yonkers last weekend. The
leak has been repaired, but it will take a few more days for the
sewage to be dispersed, and the county is advising people not to
boat in the river until Friday.

Because of some injurys that occurred last year we are not running
any bracing or support stroke classes during the Wednesday evening
classes. In addition we would like all volunteers not to engage in
any practice or "peer training" of support strokes. Support strokes
are the low-brace and high-brace strokes that we do in closed cockpit
kayakys. Without proper training there is a possibility of injuring
your shoulder if you attempt these strokes. Support strokes should
only be taught or practiced during the BCU 2-star classes that Taino
will be running. We don't have a schedule for these classes yet, but
we will send an email when we do. There are several commercial kayak
schools in the area that cover these types of advanced topics. Please
see our links page on the website for their contact information.

Closed-cockpit or decked kayaks should only be used outside of the
embayment by people on the public boat list. To get on the public
boat list you need to be a regular volunteer, have gone on 4 or 5
of the morning trips as an assistant trip leader, completed the
local conditions class, and take a short skills test. The rules
for using the public boats are posted here:

See you on the water this Saturday!!!

You are receiving this email because you asked to be placed on the
email mailing list for the Downtown Boathouse. If you no longer wish to
receive these emails please send a note to volunteer@...
