Hi Slackers, I'm in Mexico, in an internet-iffy zone, and am not sure if you got this week's slack mail. If you didn't, here it is. If you did...  here it is again: Greetings from Holbox Island, Mexico, right on the confluence of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, where the toughest decision I face every day is which lounge chair to sleep in and which beer to drink. (Neither choice is tough, for the answer is always, "This one right here.") Meanwhile, my spies (i.e. Cliff Towne) inform me that you had true sevens, not JV sevens at slacker last week. Good on you! I'm glad to hear you're managing to keep it up in my absence, and can only assume that someone brought cones (although that one time we played without cones worked out fairly well, so maybe the game doesn't really need cones and borders and lines and such. why should we be such slaves to linearity anyhow? rise up! rise up I say! Ah, but I digress). Cliffie also asked me to pass along a message about an ultimate employment opportunity for y'all. Work... hmm... from down here under the veranda, that seems like a whole lot of, well, work. Cliff message to follow. Keep 'em flying. -jv LAUSD Summer Youth Ultimate 2008 It appears that LAUSD's Beyond The Bell South Youth Services will once again find enough money in their budget to fund the Summer Disc Sports program!  We play and coach disc at a bunch of elementary schools and usually a few middle schools.   The details have yet to be fully ironed out, but here is some info: - July  7th through August 1st (an "in service training session" one Sat morning in June also is likely) - weekday afternoons - $13 to $16 per hour - you have to get hired on as an LAUSD employee (visit office, DOJ screening, TB test - these hoops need to be hopped through) - at least 2 afternoons a week (4 or 5 hour shifts) - we will entertain the idea of more shifts per week if you want them. - 2 person teams (usually 2 schools per day) - Beyond The Bell South Youth Services office is in Gardena and the schools are in that quadrant (from downtown out to the beach) You will work with the kids and their playground coaches on basic disc skills, covering throws and catches, disc golf and ultimate.  You will encourage them to participate in the culminating Ultimate tournament (probably in Sept or Oct). Look - we have 8 years of Ulty experience with the kids and coaches of these specific schools and the skill level has increased amazingly each year.  If you are interested in teaching Ulty - here is your chance.  You need to be able to free up at least two afternoons each week to participate.
