The DMCC club (our race team's parent club) is looking for 10 volunteers to help out with the Annual Mayor's ride. This doesn't preclude riding in the event yourself as long as we can rotate people.
Please respond directly to Jack Matthews, club president at Jack@...
Thank you very much.

I'm planning on riding the Waterloo Iowa 200km (125 mile) brevet on Saturday, April 19, 8:00 AM start time. Weather permitting. Its the same route some DMOS folks rode in April 2006.

Steve Givens, Bob Peterson, and I are thinking about doing the brevet in Waterloo on Saturday, April 19. We won't be doing it fast. Anyone else interested?
What a great turnout from the team for our first of many 2008 Tuesday night outdoor training rides. It sure felt good to be outside. Next week we'll also be outside unless the weather turns very, very cold.
This weekend there are opportunities for all of you to earn race team points by assisting at either the DMCC booth (contact Jack Mathews), or general Bike World operations at the EXPO (contact Bill Throckmorton). The EXPO will be held at the 7-Flags Events Center both Saturday and Sunday. Details regarding potential times to work have been included in previous messages from me, Jack and Bill.
One hour of work at the EXPO is equal to 1 team point, and typically most races are one team point. There is no maximum of team points for hours worked at the Expo (8 hours = points). There will also be certain team events that may be worth one or more team points. You can earn a maximum of 30 team points in 2008, which would result in a 30% rebate on whatever you buy for your racing and training needs from Bike World (this applies to bikes). In addition to earning points for the rebate, you also need to participate in five competitive events in 2008 to be eligible for the rebate program (that's because we're a race team). Events can include roller races, time trials, brevets, tris, crits and road races. Mountain bike and cyclocross races also count. The events do not have to be sanctioned by USA Cycling to count (so, for example, Senior Olympics and Iowa Games events would count).
Coach Ertl is looking for a Director of the Senior Games Time Trial. I had been commissioner of that event, and passed it on to Coach Ertl. Now Coach Ertl is old(er) and is eligible to race in Senior Games, and next year I'm old(er) and will be racing Senior Games. So, we'd like to find a rider who can manage this event for at least three or four years before they get old(er) and do the event themselves. Managing Senior Games is worth 15 team points. Coach Ertl will be available to help and advise...time trials are the easiest races to manage. There is typically plenty of volunteer help available. Contact either Coach Ertl or me if you are interested.
Please check out www.bikeiowa.org SKED for the 2008 Iowa racing schedule. Note this site is NOT www.bikeiowa.com , which may have some races listed but is actually more of a recreational site.
Some races and events in April that several, if not many of us, will participate in include:
Altoona Road Race: Saturday April 5
Big Creek Road Race: Sunday April 6
Elkhart Time Trial: Thursday April 10
Finchford Road Race: Sunday April 13
Waterworks Park Race: Thursday April 17
Mayors Ride for Trails: Saturday April 19 (not a race...just show the team colors)
Eagle Point Crit (Dubuque): Sunday April 20
Iowa City Road Race: Saturday April 26
So, many opportunities to race in the next month. Talk to the coaches if you're not sure which race is best for you. The Elkhart TT and Waterworks Park races are great races for beginners.
We will have practice every Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m., and in April use the Irwin's Wed night ride for training. On Thursdays we'll either be racing or training...often we do hill work south of town on Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays are usually recovery/taper days. On weekends we may have some people racing, and others doing training rides. Watch for e-mails from the coaches.

It’s going to be a beautiful day
Tuesday so we will ride outside. Let’s meet at the Sycamore Access
parking lot (south side of NW 66th
Ave, just east of the river) and plan to leave at
5:30. We will offer a road ride for those wanting to go out on the road.
We will also offer a training ride in Cottonwood
around our loop. For the rest of the summer, we will be meeting here at this
time every Tuesday.
For those doing the loop, here’s something to try: After a warmup, ride
one lap as hard as possible. Spin easily for 4 laps, then repeat several (6-8)
times. This will begin to get your ready for the stresses of racing.
With it being Easter weekend, I'm not sure who's available to ride this weekend. I will be out of town and I don't know if Randy is
back on land yet. So let's plan on having rides but there will be no guarantee that any of the coaches there to lead them. If there
isn't, hopefully one of our veteran riders can take the lead and choose the course. Remember to regroup periodically for those who may get dropped.
Saturday: 1PM Bike World West Sunday: 1PM at Starbucks at 86th and the interstate.
See you Tuesday.

Team Mates,
We are currently in the process of submitting a final rooming list to the
hotel for next weeks spring training. Due to a cancellation & two reserved
rooms left, we have room for five more riders if you want to join your team
mates for an extended weekend of training in the Ozarks. Let me know by 3:00pm
tomorrow!!! Once the final list is submitted by end of business tomorrow,
you'll have to wait until next spring. - Coach Hammer
PS - The extended weather forecast for the Ozarks looks good!!
Russ Seaton mentioned this training opportunity to me - Iowa is holding its own 200 km brevet on April 19. Great way to do some
endurance training. Links are below. Visit with Russ for more details. Several of our team did this brevet a couple of years ago.
This is the Iowa brevet website. The Calendar button on the left gets you to the rides.
The weather forecast indicates it
will be dry and mid 40's for tomorrow. So dress warmly and we'll try to
heat you up from the inside.
I don't know if the trails are uncoverd yet, so let's meet over by the entrance
to the Cottonwood area at Saylorville, same
place as last week. This is a mile north of where we usually park.
Let's plan on doing some 3 lap intervals at our 'velodrome'.

Shoot, it was 34 degrees at the top of Mt Diablo yesterday at the end of my
race.... (I did a triathlon here in CA yesterday while I am out here on
vacation). 40's will feel nice. It was a fun but tough race straight up a
mountian, 3300 feet of climg. I think the running section was the steepest.....
Have a good training ride, I have another week in the sun before I come
back..... :)

One of the services our team provides each year is to run the Iowa Senior Olympics Time Trial. Randy and I have taken the role of race director the past few years.
This year, I am a senior myself and will race in it. Therefore we need a volunteer to step up to be the race director for this. We also need about 6-8 volunteers to help
put the race on. I am willing to help the new race director this year. It really isn't that much work. Most of the work is on the weekend of the race where you need to
pick up supplies, coordinate with volunteers, and then run the race. A time trial is very easy to run and we have experienced people on the team to help out.
Therefore, I'm looking for a volunteer to be race director and several people to help with the race. The time trial is Sunday June 8th this year. The good news is there is no
conflict with any races this weekend, however it is the weekend of TOMRV.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Just to reiterate Randy's message - the weather forecast for Tuesday looks very nice so we will indeed be riding OUTSIDE Tuesday night. Please be ready to ride at 5:30. We
are meeting at the same place as previous years - the parking lot at Sycamore Access in Johnston where NW 66th Ave crosses the river.
We'll ride around Saylorville park so we won't be out on the road. Let's plan on riding until 7:00.
Do NOT show up at Team Fitness.

Let us all hope this weekend marks the end of the extreme cold weather. For those of you hardy enough to handle the cold, there is a mountain bike ride on Saturday at 1 p.m. leaving from the Ashworth Pool lot.
On Sunday at 1p.m. is a road ride leaving from Starbucks (the coaches will likely NOT be at this ride). The hard core riders who can handle a high temp of only mid-20s should try this ride.
On TUESDAY we will plan to train outside at Cottonwood, 5:30 p.m. rollout from the South Sycamore Access parking lot. If you miss the rollout, ride into Cottonwood and we'll likely being doing laps in the park, or big laps across the dam.
Daylight savings time starts this weekend...so we'll have an extra hour to ride in the evenings. So, plan to ride Tuesday at 5:30p.m. if you can. There WILL NOT be training at Team Fitness this Tuesday unless the weather forecast significantly worsens between now and then.

Good morning! The Des Moines Cycle Club will have a booth again this year at the Bike World Expo on March 15th and 16th. We need volunteers to represent the club at our booth. Shift times available are:
Saturday 9-11
11-1
1-3
3-5
Sunday 12-2:30
2:30-5
This would be a great way to meet fellow bike club members and to forget about winter for awhile!! Call a friend to join you and let me know which shift works best for you!
If you want to pick up some points and see the Bike World Expo, Bike World is looking for some help. As usual, one point per hour toward your 2008 rebate. The shifts that are available are Saturday 9am - 1 p.m., Saturday 1p.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundy Noon to 5 p.m. Contact Bill Throckmorton via e-mail to reserve a shift tbilly_2002@... or call him at the West store.
And another opportunity to earn 1 point per hour at the Expo is to work in the Des Moines Cycle Club booth to promote the cycle club (not necessarily the race team). Contact Jack Mathews at jack@... to reserve a shift. Jack is the DMCC president, and as race team members, all of you are memebers of the Des Moines Cycle Club.
If you work the Expo, you should get in without having to pay admission on the day you are working. Even if you don't work the Expo, it is worth paying a few bucks just to hang out and talk with people.
And now, as the good coach and team director, if the weather is good that weekend, you need to get in road miles. At least 2 hours each day if possible. This is especially important for those of you going on the Arkansas training trip.

The Bike World Purchase Rebate Program for race team members can be one the most substantial non-training benefits of being on the race team. Up to 30% of your Bike World purchases (excluding taxes) may be returned to you in the form of rebate check in January 2009. To earn the full rebate, you need to meet the minimum requirement of participating in 5 competitive events (tri's count, brevets counts, charity rides do not count, races count), AND earn at least 30 participation points. Generally a race or designated event counts as one point, and occasionally there are events worth many points, like working the Bike World Warehouse Sale or Expo.
It is IMPORTANT for you to do several things related to this rebate. First, be discreet at the register. Don't announce to other customers that you are getting a rebate on this purchase. Second, make very sure the purchased item is placed in the computer under an account in your name. It is a VERY GOOD idea to keep all your receipts and total your purchases at the end of the year, then report your total to me. If you have receipts, and give me the total, I will report that amount to Forrest and that will be used rather than whatever may be on the computer. It is possible the computer may not have all of your transactions, so be sure you tell them your name and they only have one account set up for you in the computer.
The rebate is for your personal race related needs. That means you can't buy bikes for friends or other family members and apply them to your rebate total, but of course, Bike World would try hard to make a good deal. You can buy things under your rebate that might benefit more than you personally, like a pump that is used by your family, a bike rack, etc.
If you have any questions about the rebate program, please contact me. If I don't have the answer, I can ask Forrest.
Thanks,
Randy

This Tuesday night we will once again be doing longer intervals to mimic road type rides. This week will be fairly straightforward - After warming up,
we'll do a series of 3 min efforts interspersed with 1 min easier periods. These 'easier' periods should not be complete rest, but just modererate efforts,
while the three minutes periods should be a little harder than endurance pace.
By the way, if anyone is interested in getting a PowerTap SL, I know someone who is selling theirs. This would be a chance to pick one up at a reasonable price.
It includes a hub but not a complete wheel, but that would allow you to build it up the way you want to.

Team Mates,
The following is a reply to a question asked by one of your fellow team mates
whom is new to the team . I thought I would pass it on to all.
Your 100% right about being safer in the group, one of the main reasons the
team trains/rides together, besides learning the proper techniques and
dynamics involved in group riding. Even when not training with the team, the
coaches highly recommend that all training rides be done in a small group or
at minimum, with a partner for safety sake.
The biggest rookie mistake newbies make is the assumption that
they need to train on their own so that they're "fast" enough to ride with the
group. Then the person gets trapped into continuing to try to get fast enough
to ride with the group, while the group continues to out pace the
fitness/training level of the individual, so the vicious cycle begins. Even if
the newbie attains a fitness level that would allow them to ride at the speed
of the group, their skill & comfort level to ride within the group will be
lacking and they still won't be able to stay with the group.
Long story short, YOU NEED TO COME AND RIDE WITH THE TEAM the next time we
ride outside and as often as your schedule allows. We're all starting from
square one in the spring and this is the best time to start with the team.
We'll never leave you behind, and I suspect with the training that you have
been doing this winter, your better than you give yourself credit, so please
come ride with the team!!
Cycling is similar to other outdoor activities, but with a few additional
conditions to take into consideration. First and foremost, moisture management
& the additional wind chill factor created by the speed of cycling. Even
though the temp was 58-60 degrees when we started the ride today, it was 45
degrees and drizzling when we rolled in. Also, the wind coming across fields
of snow/water causes that wind chill factor to drop noticeably as we rode out
in the country. So, 58-60 degrees in March is much different then in July.
As far as clothing, be prepared! This time of year it is better to error on
the side of to much rather than not enough! Layering is key! As you already
experienced this morning from the wet/cold feet, your extremities are very
vulnerable to the cold & wet, especially your feet, hands & head. Each are in
a
fairly fixed position allowing little to no movement to generate heat, your
feet having to deal with the addition of front wheel spray from wet roads.
Starting with the head, because your helmet is designed with active vents to
keep you cool in the heat of summer, it compounds the cold weather problem. A
windproof/breathable skull cap or headband with ear coverage is in order. Some
folks even use a helmet cover to deactivate the air scoops. Also, eye wear is
a must.
Your torso should have a wicking layer, insulating layer, and outer
wind/water proof layer that is preferably breathable if possible. Most of us
carried our outer layer folded up in our jersey pocket, which we were glad to
put on towards the end of the ride! For the hands, long fingered, wind proof,
lightly insulated gloves with enough dexterity to brake, shift and grab a
bottle safely are in order.
Legs are totally covered, whether they be tights, leg warmers or very
tailored close fitting wind pants. Some cold blooded folks opt for heavier
weight tights with a wind proof front.
Cycling shoes are like your helmet, designed for warm weather cycling and a
snug fit with light socks. Also, the problem of the tire spray! For these
reasons, neoprene booties that are designed to wear over the entire shoe is in
order along with a slightly heavier wool or polypro wicking sock that doesn't
cause constriction to the foot.
As mentioned with the socks, none of the material in any of the layers should
consist of COTTON!!! Cotton retains up to 5 times it weight in moisture, which
will definitely lead to accelerated hypothermia!! As we used to say in Scouts,
COTTON KILLS!!
So, this is a whole lot of information, also keeping in mind everyones
furnace runs differently. It will require a bit of experimenting on your part
to determine your own comfort level, but always be prepared for the fickle IA
spring weather, today being a perfect example.
Coaches Catron & Ertl, if there is anything I missed or points that you would
care to add, please do so.
Now, let's all do the "Spring Thaw" dance and get out there and ride!!
-Hammerman
Team,
The Arkansas training weekend is just a tick over 3 weeks away!! We have a
block of ten rooms reserved and they are almost all filled! Thanks to the
early response and enthusiasm of those already planning on going. Here is the
list of riders that I have: Danny K; Dan D; Colan; Cindy; Michelle; Barb;
Julie; Team Douglas; Andy; Russ; Terry G; Bob P; Juan & Luis; Coaches Catron &
Hammer.
If your name isn't on the list and you would like to go, please drop me an e-
mail so I can reserve more rooms and we can start planning the logistics of
car pooling! I would like to finalize the list by 3/9!!
Because we are going a bit earlier this year, a new opportunity has presented
itself in the form of a road race on Sunday! The start/finish is 9.5 miles sw
of our hotel and racing starts at 10:00 am, so this won't get us home much off
schedule from previous years. I know that our legs will be lazy from the
training miles of the previous days, but this will be a great opportunity for
a first race of the season.
Here is the link to the race website - www.nwaspringclassic.com for more
details. Please don't pre-regester, we will only race if weather conditions
are optimal. Your not required to race, but if you have any further questions
about the race, talk to Randy or I.
Now lets get out there and ride!!! -Hammerman

If the weather forecast stays true, and we get some melting on the roads, we'll start off our spring out of doors road training this weekend at 1 PM from Starbucks BOTH Saturday and Sunday. A couple of our team mates started last weekend with a 40+ mile training ride. So, we're putting this info out extra early so you can hopefully plan ahead and ride one or both days.
If the road are icy and hazardous, we of course will not ride. But hopefully we'll get some melting by the end of the week, and early on Saturday before we take to the road.
And as a reminder, our team camp in Arkansas is scheduled for March 26-30. Most of us will leave at 6P on Wed, March 26, and a couple other riders will be leaving later on Thurs, Mar 27. We'll leave to come home on Sunday afternoon, March 30. Each rider will be repsonsible for his/her hotel room expenses and food; the team will help with gas for groups that are car-pooling (we may not be able to do 100% of gas expense, but we should be able to defray the cost). If you know you want to go, but have not told Coach Hammer, please let him know as soon as possible. Coach Hammer has 10 rooms reserved at the hotel in Fayetteville.

OK team, we are down to the final stretch. As I look out my window and see it snowing it's hard to believe spring training is almost here, but it is!
And, daylight savings time starts March 9 this year so if the weather is decent, we can start heading outside on Tuesday nights in a few short weeks. In celebration of road riding, Tuesday night we will do a longer steady workout. We will ride the entire session at tempo pace, which is faster than endurance pace but
slower than time trial pace. It should take effort to keep it up but not be painful. I will through in some 1 and 2 min accelerations just to make it interesting.
Congratulations to all who completed the roller races, with our team picking up a number personal bests and medals. While these are a rather obscure type of bike racing,
it's bike racing nonetheless and gives us something to do in the dead of winter. I don't know of any other state that offers roller racing, much less a roller race state
championship.
Don't forget, we have clothing in so stop by and pick it up tomorrow night if you can. Also, be sure to bring a check if you have decided you want
to order a jersey or shorts in the new style and didn't the first time around. $50 each. See you Tuesday.

Team It's going to finally warm up this weekend but the roads/trails are likely to be slick with the melting ice.
For those wanting to venture out, meet Saturday at Ashworth Pool behind the Art Center at 1:00 PM with mountain bikes.
Sunday will be the standing Starbucks's ride on 86th and I-80/35 at 1:00PM for a road ride.
For those wanting to do the last roller race this Sunday in Cedar Falls, let's meet at the 86th St Starbucks at 9:00AM on Sunday morning and we will carpool. This will be a long day as we will be there to the end to see if any of us win medals or the set of rollers.

BikeWorld's Warehouse Sale is scheduled for this weekend and next weekend, both Friday and Saturday. As in past years, the team will award 1 participation point per hour for each hour you volunteer to work the sale. Earning points is particularly important if you plan to buy a new bike from Bike Word this calendar year. If you plan to do a substantial amount of racing (most races will count as 1 point), then you might earn your max 30 points by racing. But if you only plan to do the minimum five races, you'll probably need to earn some extra points if you want to reach the 30 point maximum.---If you have any questions...please e-mail me.
If you want to work the warehouse sale on either weekend, please e-mail or call Tom Laughead ( luggs1@... ) or cell at 371-5525 . If you know a lot about bikes and have previously sold bikes, they may use you as a salesperson. But they also need people to ferry purchased bikes from the sales area back to the shop, and from the shop to the take home area. So there is lots to do. ]
Even if you don't work the sale, I encourage you guys to check out the sale. There are often some great deals on accessories. Becasuse these sales may not be getting rung up on the computer, you may not be able to get the purchase listed under your name, but chances are it is already discounted so not a big deal. If you are buying a bike at the warehouse sale, talk to Forrest. You may (or may not) get the team rebate on a warehouse bike if it is already discounted. Typically when we get to use our rebate on new bikes, we're paying retail price.

The team kit (race team clothes) are in, and we'll have them at practice tomorrow. This is probably the earliest we've ever received the team kits...so thanks to the great work by Cindy DuBois, assisted by Dave Hammer and David Ertl, in pulling this project together. If you are not going to be at tomorrow night's practice, or the following Tuesday practice, e-mail or call Cindy to arrange receiving your clothes. Her phone number is 515.306.4766.

sounds like crit work to me...never sure how often or how long each attack is going to be....so "pace yourself accordingly" really means: ALL OUT EFFORTS during the "attack" followed by recovery draft.....by the way, I know you're granted a free lap in the event of a mechanical or accident....what if a person pukes, but doesn't get involved in an accident?
...
Tink
We’ve done quite a bit of regimented intervals lately for Tuesday night training so it’s time to mix it up and do our random intervals (including random rest intervals). Because you don’t know how long the next interval is going to be, you need to pace yourself accordingly. Intervals and rest periods will be between 30 seconds and 3 minutes. We’ll do this for 45 min.
