First timers who don't return do it for 2 reasons:
Horrible surface and a long drive. I've spoken to many people who were
regulars in Tallahassee, attended one event in Bainbirdge, then never came
back. All of them gave those 2 reasons. If we had a crappy surface that
was close to town or a great surface that was an hour away, we wouldn't
have lost nearly the amount of attendance. We were averaging 50+ entrants
the last year in Tallahassee.
That said, we can't fix the pavement, but we can get more entrants by
canvassing the local colleges, etc. All it takes is time. Something I
have very little to spare, otherwise I'd ran for the board again. If
you've got it, use it.
Being a board member, you should be pointing your assedness at your fellow
board members. If you can convince them that's what the club needs to do,
they'll do it. Nobody wanted to move on a laptop and scoring system until
Sandy kept pushing for it. It was discussed for over a year before then.
All it took was one voice loud enough and the TIME to
research/find/purchase all the parts.
This topic has reminded me of the 2nd things I thought should stay off
this discussion group:
1. Bitching about course design/events.
2. Bitching about anything that should be brought up at a membership
meeting.
If you're not willing to open your mouth in front of people who can do
something about it, then don't bother with those who can't.
Funny, I thought stuff like this would take longer to happen.
