Dear Friends,

EBRPD has invited the mountain biking community to discuss issues of mutual interest on the evening of July 29th from 7 to 9 PM at the Trudeau Center in Oakland. As you may have heard, the EBRPD Board of Directors is considering placing a new bond measure on the ballot in 2008 that would extend Measure AA by providing new funding for Regional Park land acquisition, new park and trail development, habitat restoration and rehabilitation of aging park facilities. BTCEB has been a strong supporter of increased land acquisition and preservation over our 20+ year history. However, the Districts refusal to engage in a meaningful discussion with cyclists has become untenable when the needs of cyclists continue to go unmet, or worse, are completely ignored.

Unfortunately during the last 20 years, there has not been any significant enhancement in EBRPD for off-road cyclists. Most cyclists want the same experience as other park users, a connection with nature, an escape from the urban environment, fun, exercise, and a sense of belonging.

Like most trail users cyclists prefer narrow trails. Whether one is hiking, running or riding a bike, users want to experience a close connection to nature, to be immersed in the natural world on narrow intimate trails. The experience just isn't the same on a wide fire road. While roads usually push straight through or over the hills, singletrack trails tend to wind around obstacles and blend into the surrounding environment. Many singletrack enthusiasts also seek a high degree of challenge that can not be found on ranch roads. Intermediate and advanced riders need more length and difficult trails to keep them interested. New types of riding such as free riding, downhilling and mountain unicyclists need different types of accommodation in the way trails and obstacles are built.

Please join us July 29th to share your input with District staff on how the Mt. biking experience can be enhanced throughout the EBRPD.

In the time since I originally posted this message, EBRPD has also cut off mountain bikes to completing the popular East Ridge/West Ridge loop during a fire fuel load mitigation effort.  The work is being done on the East Ridge "trail" and while other user groups can bypass the segment of closed trails, mountain bikes are simply just not allowed.

Please take this survey to help us better represent your voice: http://app.icontact.com/icp/sub/survey/start?sid=1225&cid=212590.

We need to have a collective bargaining voice when it comes to what we want to see come from the money we as taxpayers will have to pay if the Measure AA Extension passes.  Now is the time to tell the District what services we as mountain bikers want in our parks.

If you are not able to attend the meeting but have a request, please send any requests either directly to your Ward Directors or to me - dan@....

Regards!
Dan

 UPCOMING NAPA MTB RACE
Come race the Eagle Cycling Mtn Bike Race, at Skyline Park in beee-u-teeful Napa Valley on Sunday, June 29. Gears or SS are in this one, as well as more categories than you can shake a stick at. $300 Pro/Elite/Expert purse. Awarded by fastest times to the top five male and female finishers. Medals to third place in all classes. Sign up here ( www.bikereg. com/events/ register. asp?eventid= 6540 ) or day of event.

I highly suggest that those of you interested to race this get up there and pre-ride the course...It is very technical.   Starts off with a fire-road climb, then onto an uphill singletrack section ..lots of rocks, creekbeds, and one run-up stair section..Oh, and the single track on the edge of a drop-off...that' s fun!!!!

If you pre-ride it late in the day Sat, the course should be marked.

Subject: {Disarmed} Re: [diabloareamtb] EBRPD Measure AA Meeting

I would be glad to help advocate trail access for
mountain bikers. There are many illegal trails right
near my house, (ex: Mount Diablo state park, Black
Diamond Mines EBRP) that are perfectly safe for bike
use, but have been made illegal. It really frustrates
me that such great single track is so close to where I
live; but because of misunderstandings between user
groups, it is illegal for me to experience it in my
preferred medium. I think speaking in front of a
group would be great (although I should learn more
about the facts of the situation first).
There is really no reason why many of these trails
should be illegal to cyclists. We cause far less
erosion that horses, but they are allowed on trails
that we are not(I'm not saying that Horses shouldn't
be allowed on the trail, only that cyclists should
also be allowed on the trail), for sustainability
concerns: bikes creating skid marks ,etc. I could see
where some delicate trails should be closed when muddy
to prevent them being torn up though.
As far as running into people goes, I have never
observed it being an issue. Things that should be
done to further prevent problems include: trimming
back excess foliage obstructing visibility (
particularily that on the inside edge of switch
backs); making rules about earbud/ headphone use, to
prevent accidents due to being unaware that someone is
behind someone else; and requiring cyclists, horseback
riders, and even hikers, to maintain control at all
time.
This shouldn't be an issue at all in my opinion,
although I may be biased towards bikers (I also
backpack though, and have never had problems with
cyclists while backpacking).

Race: Granite Bay
Breakfast: oatmeal w/ whey protein powder
Why I chose this race: I wiped out in a huge mud
puddle, I was covered in sludge, and it got all over
my gear, and in my mouth. Then a coating of dust and
sand stuck to it. Hard to forget, man I was dirty!

I got to the race pretty early, and my dad and I
waited in the car until I saw Ruth, and her family. I
got out, and waited with them, for others to show up.
Leslie showed up, and let me use some of her chain
lube. I went for a pre-ride of the course, which was
by far the messiest course that we rode all season (in
my opinion). During the pre-ride we came to a large
cesspool like puddle, it smelled like sewage. I rode
my bike around it during the pre-ride, but later found
out that if anyone went around the puddle during the
race, that they would be penalized 5 mins. After the
pre-ride, I ate some muffins, and other snacks. I
then warmed up w/ Craig, Cameron's dad, and the other
boys. During my warm up my legs started cramping, and
I had to slow down (I need to stretch more). Leslie,
Craig, and Steve gave me advice before the race. At
the start Craig, wished me luck; and Patrick gave me a
couple Clif gels. I started running, because the
start was in the sand. On the first lap I was coming
towards the puddle, and thought that If I went into it
with some speed, that I would clear it better (instead
of getting stuck in the mud, and having to get off my
bike), but when I hit the puddle I hit a dip of
significant size, and got launched just SLIGHTLY off
the ground. At first I wasn't worried about being
airborne, but when I came down into the puddle, my
bike couldn't get any traction, and I whipped
sideways, and landed COMPLETELY COVERED IN MUD. The
guy behind me stopped just in time not to hit me, but
to splash me with more mud. Over the duration of the
next two laps I was coated in sand/dust (I didn't land
in it, must have been kicked up). Leslie was in the
feed zone, and gave me cytomax and hammer gel(nice
little "pick me up"). I was running a camelbak and a
bottle full of cytomax. Next season I think I'll
reserve the camelbak for training rides only; Cameron
pointed out that racing without a camelbak feels
better (sweat can better evaporate off your back, less
weight etc.). Good advice. I saw my Dad on the side
lines at one point. When I finished I went to a water
fountain, and did the best to clean myself, a guy came
up to me and complemented me on smiling, and enjoying
myself, even though I was really dirty. We talked for
a bit about mountain biking, and then I went to the
car, and got some clean clothes. It felt great to be
wearing a clean, soft, merino wool shirt; loose comfy
jeans, and slip-ons. I went to the side lines to
watch Ben's amazing first place finish (beat the guy
running), and stayed to watch Austin, and a few other
team mates finish. I talked to Steve, Craig, and
Leslie about racing, and got some more advice. Then I
went back to the ez-up and let Ben's dad test ride my
bike, we talked for a bit, and I left for home. I
slept in the car, and dreamed of a nice warm shower.
A fun day.

Ruth is doing this race (so is her younger brother).
Afterwards is the awards ceremony for the winners of the series.
Ruth is leading right now in her age category so we will be there for the races and the ceremony afterwards.

If you decide to race let us know and we will meet you there!

To all interested Juniors,

The final race in this year's series is the Mt. Diablo Hill Climb on
Sunday, June 22. Registration is now open and pre-registration is mandatory.
The junior categories are grouped in the same flight with several Mens and
Womens category. There is a field size limit for each flight.

So, I encourage all juniors who are planning on racing to register on
www.Sportsbaseonline.com as soon as possible.

After the final results of this race are posted, an awards ceremony will take
place near the Race Registration at Northgate High School in Walnut Creek.

Thanks,

Christine Taylor

I hear from Craig that Lesley works on Thursday evenings.

If so, then I propose we move it to Monday or Tuesday, probably 6:30pm.

I am still confirming the reservations, but I am scheduling a dinner
at Europa Family Restaurant next Thursday at 6pm.

This is a cafeteria style place with turkey and roast beef off the
bone, plus plenty of pasta and vegetables for the herbivores. There
is also a playroom with a jungle gym for the younger set.

The address is 64 Moraga Way in Orinda, and this is the website:
http://www.europahofbrau.com/.

Please RSVP to confirm.

I didn't feel particularly hot while I was waiting at the line. I
could feel the tension in the air from the other riders. I liked my
cute little nickname that Lesley gave me when the top ten were being
called up to the line. I think I was Cameron "Danger" Diputado.
We took off and I actually felt really good. I was up in the
very front pack when hitting the single track. I knew that the top 5
would start pulling away from me as the road started tightening up. I
lost ground when Sam from the NRL team slipped up on the first short
technical climb right in front of me. Then after the first climb I
took a sip of the orange Cytomax that I brought, I felt the week of
riding I missed. It took all of the first lap and part of the second
to finally bring my heart rate to something more comfortable. Not
only that but I couldn't rid the feeling of dehydration from my
mouth. I finished the first lap holding sixth, but lost some
positions since I felt like I was working at the O S#%T-my-heart-and-
lungs-are-going-to-spray-battery-acid-limit. The course was starting
to get really loose. I would assume that the single track probably
was suffering from people racing on it all morning. Nothing really
dramatic happened. I tried to drink as much as I could, went through
2 ½ bottles, which is the most I have consumed in any MTB race. I
made sure I looked pretty and strong when the cameras were on me. I
did start cramping on the last lap. I ran up that steep hill that Sam
bumped into me and my right calf blew right there. I just sucked it
up and tried to keep a high cadence to spin it out. I finished with a
semi satisfied attitude. It's not like I finished really strong or
anything. I wonder if I could've actually placed higher than 9th if I
trained in the heat.
That's the last high school league race for me. The year went
by really quick. Not to get all sentimental in front of a bunch of
mountain bike riders, but I honestly will miss racing with the team.
Key word "racing," I didn't say I wasn't going to not ride with you
guys anymore. It was an awesome course, that was hot as hell, but
somehow I reminded myself how much fun I had.
