If you have issues about a local park, or suggestions of how the club
can be more effective, this is a great way to express those points of
view. If you just wish to listen, that's just fine.
John Escobar, Assistant General Manager, Operations Division, EBRPD
will be on hand to preview the Pleasanton Ridge operational current use
plan and answer questions.
The meeting (which includes a free dinner) lasts from 7pm to 9pm. Then
those that are interested may move to a local bar for informal
discussions and beer following the meeting (which is a good enough
reason to attend in itself).
RSVPs are not required but do help us determine how much food to buy. Please send an email to dan@... if you expect to attend.

The BTCEB post-holiday ride and party is ON! As a reminder, the ride
starts at Redwood Park's Skyline Gate at 10am.

Take action to increase opportunities for Bicycling at Briones Regional Park.
EBRPD staff is now evaluating a proposal to allow bicycles on a narrow
trail (that is currently only open to hikers and horses) located
adjacent to the Alhambra Creek Staging Area entry road in Briones
Regional Park.
Staff seeks your feedback on this proposal and will accept written
comments through January 9, 2009. Background documents are posted on
the Park District's web site, as described at http://btceb.org/pdf/Public_Comment_Meeting_Notice.pdf.
Please write to:

The planning for the January BTCEB meeting has become a little muddled due to a trail use change meeting put forth by the EBRPD at the same time as our monthly meeting. EBRPD is having the Trail Use Change Meeting for the "Access Trail" in Briones Regional Park that same night at HQ (2950 Peralta Oaks Court, Oakland). So we're asking folks to a) attend the EBRPD meeting at 7:00 and then hop on over to the Englander for the end of the BTCEB meeting and beer at 9:00 or b) come to the entire BTCEB meeting.
I suggest A. We take action a few times a year and need voices to speak and well-written letters to be sent. If you can't make it, please send a letter supporting opening this trail to mountain bike use to Raphael Breines, Senior Park Planner, East Bay Regional Park District, 2950 Peralta Oaks Court, Oakland, CA 94605. More information is here: http://btceb.org/pdf/Public_Comment_Meeting_Notice.pdf.

Hello Contra Costa riders and parents -- hope everyone had a great
summer. Matt Fritzinger, the director of the NorCal league asked me
to pass along an urgent request for someone to volunteer a few hours
work at the League office in Piedmont this week. If you have some
time to spare and can get over to Piedmont to help out in the NorCal
office please give Matt a call at (510) 653-BIKE. Thanks, Amy
I am definitely racing this season. I would like to be a member of the e-mail
group. When do the team rides start? I can hardly wait to get to it again.
I've been riding nothing but fire road all summer :).
Andrew
P.S.
A guy from my school named Luke said he saw you on Mt. Diablo, and that you both
think I should "Get on the Road". He talked me into making an effort to come on
his team's Sunday Road rides. I brought my Dad's 30 year old Fuji touring road
bike to Pleasant Hill Cyclery, and they're fixing it up for me. Tomorrow I'm
going to go get fitted to the bike, and bring it back home. Hopefully I can
start doing road rides this Sunday, maybe even race; if it doesn't strongly
conflict with Contra Costa Composite. By the way, a heart rate monitor has made
a huge difference in my training :).

Just a quick reminder that this will be THIS Tuesday evening.
If you ride a bike on dirt trails in your local parks, this meeting
affects you. If you only attend 1 meeting this year, this would be the
critical one to attend.
East Bay Regional Parks wants your feedback as an off-road cyclist in
the East Bay. Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay and the
International Mountain Bicycling Association urge you to get involved
and join us at this critical meeting.

I would love to go; I'm not sure which of my parents will be available to take me. I asked my Dad, and he said he doesn't see why I should not be able to go.
Some bad news: My uncle Paul had a fatal bike crash last Thursday(I'm not sure, it seems like a long time ago). He was 57, and had been very active in skiing, soccer, and most of all: road biking. He once got 5th in the state of Illinois. He lived a great life, with plenty of friends; and I am glad for that. I will miss him very much.
So far as we know, he wasn't hit by anything moving; he was on a ride, on his own, and crashed. He completely severed his spinal cord in his neck. His lungs stopped working, and his heart was restarted when they found him, but they later discovered that he was brain dead from the temporary lack of oxygen. They took him off of life support; there was nothing that could be done for him.
When I think about it, that is probably one of the best ways you could die. It is quick, and painless. He died while he was doing something he loved. He was a careful rider, and this happened. The riding we do is a lot of fun, but there is always the danger of injuring, or killing yourself.
I don't think anything could scare me out of riding though.

On behalf of the team, we all send you our deepest sympathies for someone who is dear to your heart. I know that your uncle has had a huge impact on your life and you have been influenced by his passion for cycling. You are right , that at least he died doing something he loved. I hope I can go like that too.
We all take a chance when we ride, glad to hear that this event has not soured your passion for riding...see you out there soon,
Sincerely,
Lesley

of all: road biking. He once got 5th in the state of Illinois. He lived a
great life, with plenty of friends; and I am glad for that. I will miss him very
much.
So far as we know, he wasn't hit by anything moving; he was on a ride, on his
own, and crashed. He completely severed his spinal cord in his neck. His lungs
stopped working, and his heart was restarted when they found him, but they later
discovered that he was brain dead from the temporary lack of oxygen. They took
him off of life support; there was nothing that could be done for him.
When I think about it, that is probably one of the best ways you could die. It
is quick, and painless. He died while he was doing something he loved. He was
a careful rider, and this happened. The riding we do is a lot of fun, but there
is always the danger of injuring, or killing yourself.
I don't think anything could scare me out of riding though.
Have fun, and be careful!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan, I will prod the team to attend...I actually think I will be up in Tahoe for my boyfriends b-day, but we haven't decided yet when we will be back, I will try my best to get back, but I think he took Weds of that week off too, so I might be outvoted. If I am here you can count on me...and I am pretty sure that Andrew S. would be interested. I will talk personally to the others....

I will be attending and I am carpooling from the PH/Laf area. I have 3 rows of seat and can probably accommodate 5-6 additional people depending on size. My truck seats 8 (has 8 seatbelts) but requires small people if 3 are to fit in the back row.
I appreciate the team's cooperation with this and would appreciate it if you could all wear the team jersey to signify the group.

Dan

Team,
I think this would be a worthy cause for our team to attend and speak at. Without open trails our team would have nowhere to train for the competitive Mtn Bike Races. Can we set up a carpool to attend this event? Please post if you would be interested in attending, and we can figure it out....Lesley

Dear Friends,
EBRPD has invited the mountain biking community to discuss issues of mutual interest on the evening of July 29th from 7 to 9 PM at the Trudeau Center in Oakland. As you may have heard, the EBRPD Board of Directors is considering placing a new bond measure on the ballot in 2008 that would extend Measure AA by providing new funding for Regional Park land acquisition, new park and trail development, habitat restoration and rehabilitation of aging park facilities. BTCEB has been a strong supporter of increased land acquisition and preservation over our 20+ year history. However, the Districts refusal to engage in a meaningful discussion with cyclists has become untenable when the needs of cyclists continue to go unmet, or worse, are completely ignored.
Unfortunately during the last 20 years, there has not been any significant enhancement in EBRPD for off-road cyclists. Most cyclists want the same experience as other park users, a connection with nature, an escape from the urban environment, fun, exercise, and a sense of belonging.
Like most trail users cyclists prefer narrow trails. Whether one is hiking, running or riding a bike, users want to experience a close connection to nature, to be immersed in the natural world on narrow intimate trails. The experience just isn't the same on a wide fire road. While roads usually push straight through or over the hills, singletrack trails tend to wind around obstacles and blend into the surrounding environment. Many singletrack enthusiasts also seek a high degree of challenge that can not be found on ranch roads. Intermediate and advanced riders need more length and difficult trails to keep
them interested. New types of riding such as free riding, downhilling and mountain unicyclists need different types of accommodation in the way trails and obstacles are built.
Please join us July 29th to share your input with District staff on how the Mt. biking experience can be enhanced throughout the EBRPD.
In the time since I originally posted this message, EBRPD has also cut off mountain bikes to completing the popular East Ridge/West Ridge loop during a fire fuel load mitigation effort. The work is being done on the East Ridge "trail" and while other user groups can bypass the segment of closed trails, mountain bikes are simply just not allowed.
We need to have a collective bargaining voice when it comes to what we want to see come from the money we as taxpayers will have to pay if the Measure AA Extension passes. Now is the time to tell the District what services we as mountain bikers want in our parks.
If you are not able to attend the meeting but have a request, please send any requests either directly to your Ward Directors or to me - dan@....
