We're up in Summit now. If it doesn't snow much, which looks most
likely, I think Copper could work well for our group (we have some out
of town guests). If it snows more than 5 inches, we'll probably want to
hit the trees at Vail.
We'll be up checking the reports shortly before 7 am. Call me on the
cell: 303-522-6194.
Hundreds of skaters. One weekend. Closer to a cure.
Join us for the 2005 Referral Mortgage MS SUN 75 on the scenic Willard Munger Trail July 16 and 17, 2005!
You do the skating and we will take care of the rest! Enjoy beautiful landscapes as you make your way from Hinckley to Duluth. The event is fully catered and fully supported with frequent rest stops, first aid, meals and even someone to give you a lift if you need a rest.
Hundreds of people will skate together to raise funds and awareness in the fight against MS. Don't miss this opportunity to make a difference.
Pull out your skates and sign up today. You can also share the experience by organizing a team of your family, friends and co-workers.
Stop skating in circles and join us in the fight to end the devastating effects of MS!

For anyone
interested, we have a small group, including a skater from DC, skiing
this weekend. I don't know where we'll be, but you can reach me on the
cell to join us. We'll be up there Thursday through Sunday.
I went to Miami last year with Karen and we had a great time. I wish we
had known you were there last year, as we thought we were the only
representatives from Colorado.
To anyone considering it, I highly recommend skating in
South Beach if you get the chance.
Personally, I am in Colorado precisely because of the snow and
mountains, so I will be up there this February. I wish they had the
Great Eskate in November during our "shoulder" season.
There are many other national skate events. I have skated in Philly,
Boston, and NYC in numerous events and would recommend them all.
I haven't updated the site with national events, but I will try to do
this at some point (it's been very hectic).
To anyone who goes to one of these events, please let us know about it
on the list.
I'm actually in Ohio, but love reading your "digests"...(have learned a lot!)
Great EsSkate had given out coupons last June at the Philadelphia Freedom Skate (which is usually the last weekend in June and a great event for anyone interested). The coupons had the dates as Feb 11-13. I had bid vacation time based on those dates, but they had changed the dates to Feb 4-6 somewhere along the way. I am scrambling, now, but working hard to get there!
Hope to meet you there!
Cheri Diederich
Columbus, OH
p.s. I have found out about several skating events..Disney World beginning of May,
Montreal in July and October...have never been there, but I will be trying to do both,
The 37-mile Trail Skate in Tampa (went this past November--LOVED IT!!). Washington DC usually has a big weekend, Memorial Day weekend, New York has one in August...etc...THERE IS A LOT TO DO!!!
Can't wait to get to Colorado for some skiing...looks like beginning of April!!
For NY events, I would check out the Empire Skate Club at
http://www.empireskate.org/,
which is listed on our Resouces/Skate Clubs page. The NY Marathon and
100K are listed on our Calendar/Events page with a link to Empire
Speed.
I've been to the Great EsSkate every year since they started in 2001.
Unfortunately, I won't be going this year in favor of a couple of ski
trips. I posted to the board about Miami for the last 2 years, but no one
ever seemed interested in these out-of-state events, so I stopped
posting.
We did have this listed on our web site under Calendar/Events. The site
has not been updated for 2005 yet. There are plenty of links in the
Resources section - check out the links to clubs in other cities and they
always have events listed there.
There are a lot of annual skate events in and near the US... Feb skate in
Miami, May event in DC, June/July Freedom skate in Philly, as well as a
great number of marathon and 10K race-event weekends, from Long Beach, CA
to NY, NY to Montreal, Canada, to Fiji/Tahiti. Most of them are
marathon-type events, but they usually incorporate a social skate and
parties. I have either been to, or know someone who has been to all of
these events.
Colorado has no such events, aside from some indoor racing, to my
knowledge. I believe this is why no one in Denver seems to know much
about the rest of the US skating community and how street skates are
done. I would love for this to change, but do not presently have the
money or the time to invest in event creation and promotion.
If anyone else does, feel free to step up to the plate! I do know a lot
of folks heavily involved in skating events around the country, and many
of them are happy to offer advice and guidance.

I got waylaid in Malaysia for an extra week - and I heard the skiing in Colo.
was getting pretty good. CNN even had some clips of car pileups in Denver from
recent snowstorms. I did get to go scuba diving for a day in Indonesia - 2
dives for $40,000 Rupiah (about $40) including lunch, boat ride, beer, sunburn
...
Kon, what are you doing in Jakarta? And why ski in January when you could skate? (I know we'll have at least one warm day to skate this month....)

Okay then, let's post skates whenever possible (40 degrees or higher, and some
sunshine!). The weather reports are pretty reliable, so we don't have to rely
on luck or sheer spontaneity. And, Patrick, I skated the from REI north trail
we hit that day, then took the long way home through Cheeseman Park....

As fate would have it,I skated on Sat. also.It was wonderful!!!My reaction to winter skating was all that winter gear and freezing butts. If its 40 or better and dry,its good.

I wish I could have hooked up Jenny Lynn. I headed out Saturday about
2:30 for a break from Christmas shopping after noticing that my
thermometer read 73F!
As far as: "TNS GOES ALL YEAR LONG, canceling only because of rain,
snow, or extreme cold and wind." I thought those conditions defined
winter in NY. Am I wrong?
But Barry! You don't have to skate in sub freezing weather to skate in Denver in the winter. This past Saturday was a case in point--50-60 degrees, sunshine (with a breeze, but nothing biting), and incredibly clear mountain views. I had an amazing skate on clear trails. January is sure to have a few of those perfect days, too, if you folks aren't always skiing!

Hi all, I received this through another listserve and thought some of you might find it to be of interest. I'm not saying we should continue our weekly skates over the winter like these folks - remember they don't have Summit County just around the corner! Karen
From: "Leo Lozada, Jr." Subject: Winter Skating + Proper Dressing SKATING OUTSIDE IN THE COLD IS EASY - WHEN PREPARED: You can, and we do, enjoy skating all year long in New York City, including throughout our coldest winters! It is safe and fun if the streets are dry. The only special thing you have to do is dress properly. More on dressing follows below. There are many ways and
places you can
skate when it is cold. You can skate by yourself or with a group. Here is one option, EMPIRE'S TUESDAY NIGHT SKATE - TNS GOES ALL YEAR LONG, canceling only because of rain, snow, or extreme cold and wind. Cold weather alone does not keep them from the reason for its existence. You can skate with TNS weekly at 8:00 p.m., meeting at Blade Board and Skate at 120 West 72nd Street, between Broadway and Columbus. Say hello to the skaters and regulars will make you feel welcomed. You have to be an
intermediate
to an advanced street skater comfortable with a brisk pace on the streets with traffic at night. For details, surf to http://www.empireskate.org, Tuesday Night Skate, or call the Skatephone at 212-774-1774 extension
5. The
Empire Skate Club and others continue going out on occasionally
weekends in our
winter wonderland. CHECK THOSE EMAILS. For example, on a Saturday afternoon, during an earlier January, in the midst of our cold winter season, twenty-five Empire members and friends skated twenty-two miles. We went round trip through Manhattan to the beautiful Queens Flushing Meadow Park, the site of the 1960's World's Fair, US Open Tennis
Courts, and
the Met's Shea Stadium. Okay, a handful of skaters took the subway back after our midpoint lunch break. That was not because of the cold
weather. They
were overstuffed from all the good food and drinks they had during our socializing, communal meal. We were all dressed right and relished being together on the brisk, okay - cold, bright, sunny afternoon. Proper clothing helped us have fun! WHAT TO WEAR - LAYERING AND VENTING ARE THE KEYS TO COMFORTABLE WINTER: Do not risk frostbite when the low temperatures and winds combine to keep some skaters off the streets. As I frequently say to folks, who are afraid to skate in the cold: "Do you go out in the
winter? Yes,
they always answer. Well, I ask them, do you dress properly to walk in the cold? Yes, again. Then put on the right clothes and you can just as easily skate, and have fun doing it!" By using layers you can insulate
yourself
from the cold and wind, allowing for removing or adding clothes as you warm up or cool down. Yet, if you dress properly, you can avoid both extremes. Start from the skin outwards by wearing a breathable, non-absorbent, wicking layer. No matter what the temperature is you always perspire, sweat when skating. You do not want that water trapped near your skin where the cold can reach it and chill it and you. Water is a conductor of
cold and
you want to keep it away from your skin. Cotton and wool are no-nos. They act like sponges soaking up the water and holding it. Just make
sure you
do not put an absorbent material near your skin. Various types and brands of materials will whisk your perspiration to the next layer. Some of them are polypropylene, Dryfit, Coolmax, silk, Capitene, among others. The next or middle layer should help to insulate, keep you warm, and trap air. Of course breathable wear here also helps. Other possible materials include wool, thermals, Duofold, Polartec, Polarfleece, or other fleece material. Even cotton might work here depending on how much you sweat. Next and finally wear a wind proof outer layer, preferably also breathable and ventable. Using layers makes it easier to add or remove clothing to keep you warm throughout the day, or night. The number and type of layers you use depend on the temperature, wind, skating intensity, personal perspiration rates and tolerance of cold. On extremely cold days, near or below freezing, I usually wear Dryfit, Coolmax, or silk near my skin; followed by another breathable thicker layer, Duofold or cotton turtleneck, a breathable fleece covering or vest, then a nylon, or
breathable,
ventable jacket or pullover. I make sure my top layer is ventable, so I can readily open or close it to disperse heat or moisture, and for temperature control. I wear cotton, silk or breathable underwear. On my legs that are less susceptible to the cold, I use silk, Duofold, or other thermal long johns; covered with a wind proofing layer of either nylon pants, or special wind proof, breathable, lightly fleeced bicycling tights or pants; even cotton pants. Some women wear panty hose or tights below their pants. I
have
found a couple of great pairs of slightly fleece insulated, breathable,
wind
proof, water-resistant bicycling pants that eliminate the need for an insulating layer over my legs. MAKE SURE HANDS ARE WARM, AND WEAR PROPER SOCKS: Your hands will always get cold in frigid weather so be sure you cover them with gloves or mittens. Wearing YOUR WRISTPADS WITH YOUR GLOVES is IMPORTANT. Make sure that either your gloves fit below your pads, or your gloves are big enough to fit over wrist pads. Personal preference rules here, gloves or mittens, pads over or under. Some
people wear
special winter biking gloves, or ski gloves. Most ordinary wear gloves
of all
types of materials: wool, synthetic, insulated leather, even cashmere. Feet are always important. Some wear extra or a warm pair of socks. Again,
start
from the skin outwards by wearing a breathable, non-absorbent, wicking layer. No matter what the temperature is you always perspire, sweat when skating. Sweat on your feet is always a problem when skating. It can just make you uncomfortable or worst, result in blisters. Personally,
what I
wear on my hands varies with how cold it is. When mildly cold, I wear silk glove liners, acrylic, or unlined leather batting or golf type
gloves;
colder days result in liners and wool or synthetic gloves; extreme cold calls for my fur lined leather gloves. I never find the need to wear something as warm as ski gloves, but others do. Whenever my feet are in skates, I wear polypropylene type socks. Personally, one pair suffices for me whether it is hot or cold outside. Even when skiing all day, I just need one pair of these socks. Others frequently wear two pairs, either a whisking, breathable sock or two pairs. Some ladies wear panty hose on their legs, and find that one pair of whisking socks on top is enough. WEAR A HAT, HEADBAND, OR HEAD BALACLAVA: The latter covers everything except your eyes, and comes in different materials. It is a one-piece combination hood for your head, neck and face. The trick here is to make sure whatever you wear on your
head
fits under your helmet, which you should always wear when skating. You can lose forty to sixty percent of your body heat by not covering your head as you do the rest of your body. That lost body heat can be retained with head wear and by keeping you warm instead. I wear a thin, tightly woven synthetic, breathable polypropylene stretch cap under my helmet that does the job. Before that I used to wear a fleece headband that kept my
ears
and forehead warm. EYE WEAR: You should always wear eye protection when skating. Glasses protect your eyes from the sun, wind, cold, dust and other particles that smash into your eyes as you speed along on your skates. In the
winter,
glasses perform that extra special duty of keeping the cold wind from drying out and chilling those great, big, beautiful eyes. Sun glasses during the day, clear, amber, or rose glasses at night. I always skate with eye wear as recommended by an eye doctor years ago. She said eye protection should always be worn when participating in outdoor sports.
Otherwise,
you can seriously damage your sight. The point was emphasized because I
know
of at least two people who had tiny slivers of flying metal imbedded in their eyes, one while skating, the other biking. Doctors had to remove
them.
FACE MASK: Some people wear cold weather face protecting masks, and
swear
by them. They usually make these masks of neoprene, which skiers, snow boarders, scuba divers, extreme mountain climbers have worn for years to add extra warmth. Others wear a face mask made out of a bandanna of cotton, synthetic or silk. I prefer a silk one that folds small into my
pocket
when not in use. Whatever, be careful when you roll into a bank wearing
one.
Folks may draw guns on you. FACE CREAM: Okay tough guys do not wear make-up. But smart women do. We could and should always learn from smart women! Cold and wind chap and dry out facial skin. A protective cream can stop dry, wind chapped
skin, and
with a sun protector will prevent sunburn. Yes, you can catch sunburn in the winter. SHOP FOR DEALS: It does not have to be expensive. Some of these layers you probably already own. You can also find various discount sports, outdoor sports,
camping
stores, outlets or websites where great deals exist. A few among many I have used include Sierra Trading Post
something you want online, "Google it", search for the item at http://www.google.com. You may find it somewhere less expensive. TRY IT YOU WILL LIKE IT: I have enjoyed skating throughout the winter since I began skating. Actually, I started skating to cross-train for skiing. Many of these dressing methods I carried over from my skiing experience. I use to tell people: If you can walk in the cold, ski or play in the snow, you can skate in the winter. All you have to do is dress properly, as is always the rule whatever the time of year. Layering works wonders!
