May-Treanor, Walsh look to continue incredible run
By Melissa Margulies / Special to AVP.com
From
the 1920's-40's, Coney Island was known as the "World's Largest
Playground" because it was the ultimate destination for fun: there were
three large fairgrounds complete with exhilarating rides, cotton candy
and warm sunny beaches. This weekend, the island will again become
one of the largest playgrounds when the AVP circuit makes its annual
stop in Brooklyn. The Crocs Slam Brooklyn Presented by Cushman and
Wakefield will transform the beach into a 13-court volleyball showdown.
After making their way through the rounds, the men will face off in a final on Saturday at 2:30.
Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers are the No. 1 seeds and have won seven
out of eight tournaments that they've entered this year. This weekend
they will have to battle against many strong men's teams. Look for Sean
Scott and Nick Lucena and No. 3 John Hyden and Brad as they vie for the
chance to appear on center court for the finals. On the
women's side, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh have been flattening
the competition in their last 90-straight match wins. This weekend,
they will be attempting to hold off the upset from No. 2 Jenny Johnson
Jordan and Annett Davis and No. 3 Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs. The women's championship match with take place at 2:30 on Sunday.
If you aren't fortunate enough to be able to attend the tournament that
will be talking place in the hot Coney Island sun, don't forget that
you can still catch the action! Watch the finals live on NBC... but you
probably shouldn't expect to have a golden tan by the end of it. ---

Dear Members:
The Pose Volleyball Jump Clinic is only two weeks away! Registration is
still open. Go to www.posetech.com or contact Tracy Peal @ 302-753-0220
for more information. Remember, this clinic is now open for boys and
girls (grades 7th-12th) who are interested in jumping higher, reducing
the risk of injury and improving the often-neglected aspects of
strength, coordination and balance.
If you are a player or a coach, please consider joining John Kessel
from USA Volleyball for a camp this summer!
The 'kamp' is unique in that it allows players and coaches to come
together to learn the game from both angles. Players who coach
become better players...so that is the 'theme' of this 'kamp'

do so simply by attending the Kessel Kamp.
USA Volleyball has approved our application for CAP Module credit,
totalling 5 credits. There is no additional cost to gain this
credit.
The KAMP is filling quickly, but there is still some spots left.

Remember, this clinic is for both players and coaches, but features a
coaches only portion on Friday to prepare the coaches for the rest of
the weekend.

PRESS RELEASE 29.07.2007
AMERICANS SWEEP SWATCH-FIVB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP GOLD MEDALS
Gstaad, Switzerland, July 29, 2007 - The only thing that Todd Rogers
mishandled here Sunday was the opening of a champagne bottle after he and
Phil Dalhausser won the men’s finale to give the United States a sweep of
the gold medals this weekend at the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships
powered by 1to1 energy.
After eliminating reigning Olympic champions Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos
of Brazil in the morning’s first semi-final match, Dalhausser and Rogers
joined compatriots Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh as USA gold medal
winners this weekend by defeating Dmitri Barsouk and Igor Kolodinsky of
Russia 21-16 and 21-14 in the 45-minute finale.
In addition to sharing the US$60,000 first-place prize in the $1-million
“Beach Volleyball Bash” in the Swiss Alps, Dalhausser and Rogers will
benefit from the 1,000 points towards qualifying for the Beijing 2008
Olympics. A tandem’s best eight finishes on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour
through July 20, 2008 will count towards qualifying for the 24-team field.
“This weekend was about Beach Volleyball, but not just about Beach
Volleyball,” said the 33-year Rogers, who was named the SWATCH most
outstanding player for the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships. “For me, these
experiences are what I will remember. It not only is the competition, but
it is about the fans in the stands, the beautiful surroundings and the
overall atmosphere of good feelings generated this weekend.”
Rogers also added, that his partner “was the real outstanding player for the
event. I bet Phil that he would be the SWATCH top player for the event
since this was a homecoming for him and his family. I share this award with
him as he is becoming one of the great players in the world. I am lucky to
have him as a partner.”
Sunday’s title was the second SWATCH gold medal for the Americans, who won
for the first time on the FIVB tour last August in Austria where Dalhausser
and Rogers defeated Emanuel and Ricardo for the title. The next stop on the
international circuit is next week in Austria where Dalhausser and Rogers
will be defending their Klagenfurt title as the reigning SWATCH-FIVB World
Champions.
“It is a tremendous feeling to win this title in front of my parents and
relatives,” said the 27-year old Dalhausser, who lived a year in Switzerland
before moving to the United States with his Swiss mother and German father.
“We played two quality opponents today. Except for the second set against
the Brazilians, we had a great day.”
Rogers and Dalhausser advanced to the gold medal match by posting a 21-16,
13-21 and 19-17 win in 68 minutes over Emanuel and Ricardo, who captured the
2003 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships in Rio de Janeiro before claiming
Olympic gold the next year in Athens.
Barsouk and Kolodinsky, who shared $45,000 for second-place as the first
Russian men’s or women’s team to play in a SWATCH-FIVB World Tour gold medal
match in the 20-plus-year history of the International circuit, advanced to
the title match with a 21-13 and 21-19 win in 45 minutes over Andrew Schacht
and Joshua Slack of Australia.
In the bronze medal match, Schacht and Slack ended Brazil’s run of men’s
medals at the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships as the Australians upset
Emanuel and Ricardo 21-17 and 21-19 win in 42 minutes to capture the $35,000
third-place prize. The Brazilians split $28,000 for fourth-place.
The eighth of 13 double gender stops on the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour, the
women’s 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Championships ended Saturday with reigning
Olympic champions May-Treanor and Walsh defeating Jia Tian and Jie Wang of
China 21-16 and 21-10 for their third-straight world title.

Hey fellow volleyball fanatics! My name is Nicole Nilson and I play
year around/every surface volleyball in the Atlanta, GA area. I work
with/for Pro
Beach Volleyball Player AL-B Hannemann and his sports travel
companies "Volleyball Vacations" and "Ulitimate Sports Vacations".
In February I went on my first "Volleyball Vacation" cruise where we
had amazing clinics and play in Jamaica, Grand Turks, Cozumel and
Grand Cayman. I have been playing this game for 25 years and I must
say that I saw more improvement of my skills and learned more about
this game in that week than I have over the last 15 years!...And got
to play in beautiful settings to boot!
AL-B has been running "Volleyball Vacations" for 12 years, and if you
are a volleyball enthusiast like me, you will agree that there is
simply no better vacation to take! I don't know about you, but a
perfect vacation to me is being on the beach, playing ball until I
drop and then having a few (OK, maybe 10?!) drinks and some sort of
fun at night! However, I find that when I try to get a pick-up game
at the beach, there are usually nothing but "BBQ ballers"
available.....and that is just not the same....or even fun.
Well, AL-B has taken care of that with his new venture "Ultimate
Sports Vacations". From October 27-November 3rd we will be taking
over the entire club med village in Turks and Caicos. The best and
most unique thing about this trip is that it will include multiple
other sports/disciplines that will make up the rest of the village.
That means that because we "own" the village there will be nothing
but other like-minded athletic adults to play and party with!
For the volleyball villagers, our day will be a mixture of clinics
and tournament play with AVP pro's. Last trip the pro's included
Sinjin Smith, "Team Gorgeous" Michelle Moore and Suzanne Stonebarger,
Gold medalist Eric Fonoimoana and of course, AL-B.
They have also lined up amazing nightly entertainment, a huge
Halloween Bash and an end-of-week multiple sports village Olympics.
This is an all-inclusive vacation package, which means that all food,
drinks (yes, even top-shelf liquors), coaching and entertainment is
included in the price!!!!(Yes, that means once you get there, you
won't need to spend another penny!!!) For the volleyball portion the
cost is $1550 for the land portion. We have found a very cheap
flights recently.... for example $356.20 out of Atlanta this week.
If you have a friend
that would love to go but doesn't play ball, they can come for $1300
and get a taste of all the sports/disciplines that USV is offering,
or just hang out and enjoy all that club med has to offer.
I can say first hand that there is no better way to improve your game
than to be coached by the pro's. As they have told me time and time
again, "It doesn't matter how many times you play, the only way you
will get better and really improve your game is to run drills". It's
true!
I am hoping to get a great turnout from FUN people from all over the
country who love to socialize and play alot of ball!! You can go to
www.ultimatesportsvacations.com to read up on all the sports offered,
and see a schedule of events for the week. To read up on AL-B go to
www.alhannemann.com , www.volleyballvacations.com or
www.myspace.com/alhannemann . Please also feel free to contact me at
bb2nicole@... or 404-423-9973.
Hope to see you on the beach!!!!
Nicole

Medel-Souza highlight surprise teams
Early action also features Hyden-Keenan, Stolfus-Loomis
By Monique Moyal / AVP.com
SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. — Results during Saturday's portion of the 2007
Seaside Heights Open presented by Bud Light were spread across the board
more generously than they were on Friday.
"There's a lot of good teams out here and we always find ourselves in
dogfights," Anthony Medel said. "But the more we come out on top, the more
we start winning those matches, the more and more confidence we can build
up."
He and partner Fred Souza found themselves in quite a few high-scoring
matches, including multiple three-game matches. They are still in it and
will try to enter their first semifinal of the year from the contender's
bracket.
Highlights from their play included a win that sent home No. 9 Jason Ring
and Matt Olson in seventh place after a 21-15, 21-11 final score.
For the other contenders still left, the men have the No. 2, 7, 10, and 12
seeds intact. Surprisingly for the women, the four contenders remaining are
the No. 1, 3, 4 and 12 seeds.
Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan take on Dianne DeNecochea and Barbra
Fontana, while Tyra Turner-Rachel Wacholder simultaneously see Nancy
Mason-Carrie Dodd. If a lot of these names sound familiar, it's because they
are usually on the other side of the semifinals in the winner's bracket.
Still alive for the men besides Medel and Souza are John Hyden and Brad
Keenan, who will play the Medel-Souza first thing in the morning. The second
men's contender's match will be between Ty Loomis-Hans Stolfus and Jake
Gibb-Sean Rosenthal, who took the last match of the day on Saturday, 21-19,
21-15.
However, half of the men's semifinals brackets are pretty typical for the
2007 season. Top-seeded Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers have only dropped
one game thus far this weekend and have secured the first slot as a result.
Following suit were No. 3 Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger, who becoming more
consistent this year.
"Those memories are still fresh in my head, so everyone we get I don't take
it for granted," said Lambert of his subpar finishes earlier this season.
Though the men's semis are slightly predicable, a lot has changed without
Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, who won their FIVB semifinals match in
Montreal on Saturday night.
No. 5 Jen Boss-April Ross and No. 2 Nicole Branagh-Elaine Youngs hold their
customary spot in the semis to take on the two winners from the contender's
bracket.
Contender's bracket play begins at 9:30 a.m. EDT. From there, the winners
split for each gender.
The women's semifinals begin first around 11:00, with the men's immediately
following upon conclusion of those matches.
That sets up the women's finals matchup at 2:30 p.m. and the men's at 4:00.
All matches will be broadcast free online at avp.com.
===
Saturday's highlights: April Ross and Jennifer Boss dropped two higher seeds
en route to a berth in the semifinals, while Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger
won a pair of matches to advance to the semifinals and play for a chance to
win their second straight AVP title.
Match of the day: Angela Lewis and Priscilla Lima endured a one-hour,
13-minute marathon in a contender's bracket match against Holly McPeak and
Logan Tom, but prevailed with a 21-18, 16-21, 20-18 victory.
Upset of the day: No. 7 John Hyden and Brad Keenan dropped No. 2 Sean
Rosenthal and Jake Gibb into the contender's bracket with a 21-19, 21-10
victory.
Karch watch: Kiraly and Kevin Wong ended the tournaments of both Eric
Fonoimoana-Albert Hannemann and Casey Jennings-Mark Williams before being
eliminated themselves by Rosenthal and Gibb.
Start/finish: Gates will open at 9:00 a.m. ET on Sunday with play beginning
at 9:30. The women's final will be at 2:30 p.m. ET with the men's final set
to follow at approximately 4:00 p.m. Competition is expected to conclude at
approximately 5:30 p.m. ET.
Weather forecast: A high of 94 degrees under sunny skies is expected Sunday
with a chance of precipitation projected at 20 percent.
Match to watch: No. 10 Fred Souza and Anthony Medel will play No. 7
Hyden-Keenan in a contender's bracket match with a slot in the semifinals on
the line.

Deep sand shapes Seaside's play
Eight men's and women's teams remain spotless
By Monique Moyal / AVP.com
SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. — With two days of play in the books and no rain
delays — knock on wood — here at the 2007 AVP Seaside Heights Open presented
by Bud Light eight main draw teams remain unblemished for both the men and
the women.
The scenery in Seaside is a bit different than past weeks, and players will
have to get back in the groove of actual beach play in the next two days,
especially with the Long Beach Open coming in two weeks.
"This weekend is tougher than it has been in the past, being on the beach,"
said Annett Davis. "We haven't been on a real beach [in a while], the sand
is really deep. The parking lots [of previous weeks] are really shallow and
thin, and it's been raining so it is really hard-packed. This is really deep
and makes it tough to run around."
Since Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh are missing from the women's main
draw, many teams have a shot at taking only the second title of the year
that has not been won by the usual top-seeded pair.
Play begins Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. EDT for half of the contender's
bracket, both male and female. About one hour later at 10:30 a.m., the
contender's bracket finishes up Round 2.
Then the winner's bracket can begin at 11:30, with eight undefeated teams
still left for the men and eight for the women.
Undefeated and poised to grab a title for the women are No. 1 Tyra
Turner-Rachel Wacholder, No. 9 Paula Roca-Sarah Straton, fifth-seeded Jen
Boss-April Ross and No. 4 Dianne DeNecochea-Barbra Fontana.
Picking up play at 12:30 p.m. will be Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordan, No. 6
Holly McPeak and Logan Tom, 10th-seeded Ashley Ivy-Heather Lowe and
second-seeded Nicole Branagh-Elaine Youngs.
The No. 7 and 8 seeds, Angela Lewis-Priscilla Lima and Angie Akers-Brooke
Hanson, respectively, are not to be found in the winner's bracket after
dropping their Friday matches. They will have to try their hands at the
contender's bracket first thing Saturday.
Things are a bit more complicated from the men's side.
Left in the eight remaining winner's bracket matches are the No. 1, 2, 3, 6,
7, 9, 12 and 20 seeds. Top-seeded Phil Dalhausser-Todd Rogers take on No. 9
Matt Olson-Jason Ring and No. 12 Ty Loomis-Hans Stolfus will see 20th-seeded
Ryan Mariano-Ed Ratledge at 11:30.
The noon hour features matchups for third-seeded Mike Lambert-Stein Metzger,
No. 6 Dax Holdren-Jeff Nygaard, seventh-seeded John Hyden-Brad Keenan and
No. 2 Jake Gibb-Sean Rosenthal.
Everyone else still alive lies in the contender's bracket and must win out
to avoid elimination.
Already falling victim to premature elimination here on the Atlantic beach
were No. 13 John Mayer and new partner Chad Turner. They, like seven other
men's teams and eight women's leave New Jersey in 25th place.
===
Friday's highlights: The women's side saw the top teams advancing as no seed
lower than 10th remains in the winner's bracket. On the men's side, though,
No. 12 Ty Loomis and Hans Stolfus will play No. 20 Ryan Mariano and Ed
Ratledge in a winner's bracket matchup of low seeds.
Match of the day: In the first round, No. 11 Nick Lucena and Will Strickland
were extended by the 22nd seeded team of Tyler Hildebrand and Scott Lane,
24-22, 18-21, 15-11.
Upset of the day: Qualifiers Kevin Dake and Lucas Wisniakowski, defeated and
ousted No. 13 John Mayer and Chad Turner, 26-28, 21-19, 15-13, in a
contender's bracket match.
Karch watch: Kiraly and partner Kevin Wong took their first match of the day
by upending Dake and Wisniakowski but then dropped their succeeding match to
Mariano and Ratledge to fall into the contender's bracket. They will play
Eric Fonoimoana and Albert Hannemann on Saturday in the contender's bracket.
Start/finish:Gates will open at 9:00 a.m. ET on Saturday with play beginning
at 9:30. Competition will conclude at approximately 6:00 p.m. ET.
Weather forecast: A high of 88 degrees under sunny skies is expected
Saturday with chance of precipitation projected at 10 percent.
Match to watch: No. 4 Barbra Fontana and Dianne DeNecochea will face No. 5
April Ross and Jennifer Boss in the winner's bracket on Saturday.
