Roller derby fans, are you ready for DCRG's bout this Saturday against the Blue Ridge Rollergirls of Asheville, NC?
Southern Hostility, indeed.
Do you have your tickets?
If not, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Don't risk being turned away at the door. Get them now! You can still get 'em at the advance ticket price of $10 plus fees via Ticketmaster HERE . Or you can call to order them or pick 'em up at any Ticketmaster location. (Of course, if you're a gambler, you can wait til Saturday and buy them at the door for $15, if there are any left!)
Be sure to specify, though, that you want tickets for SOUTHERN HOSTILITY on March 22nd, as pre-sale tickets for Ticketmaster club members for the April 5th SPRING FLING bout against Cincinnati are also currently on sale, so there's been a little confusion.
(General admission tickets for the SPRING FLING bout go on sale to the public Saturday morning at 10 a.m., so you can actually pick those up in person at the Kentucky Expo Center when you come to the bout on Saturday!)
OK, now that we've got all that straightened out, do you remember me telling you that there would be tailgating for this bout? Well it's definitely on! The weather forecast for Saturday is partly cloudy and temperatures in the mid to upper 40's - a little cool but generally pretty darned good tailgating weather. Just go to Lot H (right inside Gate 4 - check the map here ) between 1:30 and 5 p.m. and look for all the crazy DCRG fans in their red and black gear! We'll be there, eating, drinking and generally workin' ourselves into a frenzy in anticipation of the bout. The only rules are: don't bring any kegs, don't be disorderly, and pick up after yourselves. Seems pretty simple to me! So come on out and join us! The more the merrier!
Doors for the bout open at 5:30 p.m. and the bout starts at 7 p.m. Get there early if you want those good seats! And then after the bout, don't forget about the After Party at the Monkey Wrench (1025 Barret at Winter). That last one was off the hook! Keep your bout ticket stubs, as they gain you free entrance to the After Party - it's $3 for everyone else, with proceeds going to the Kosair Children's Hospital this time. And though DJ Kim Sorise will be spinning at the actual bout, DJ Matt Anthony will take over for the After Party this time, just to shake things up.
OK, that's it. Posters are below for both upcoming bouts with all the pertinent information. Don't forget to wear your black and red. Noisemakers are encouraged! And we'll see you on Saturday!!!
I won't go into ALL the details of the upcoming SOUTHERN HOSTILITY bout on Saturday March 22nd at 7pm at the Kentucky Exposition Center's West Hall, cuz you can just read the poster (below), visit the DCRG website , or visit this yahoo group's homepage and read the last email I sent you.
But I will remind you that TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW and are going fast! If you haven't gotten yours yet, you definitely should, as this bout is likely to sell out just like the last one and you don't want to get turned away, now, do you?
Here's the Ticketmaster link: Buy tickets here! Or you can always buy them at the Kentucky Exposition Center (KEC) Ticket Office or any Ticketmaster outlet, or by phone (502-361-3100 or 1-800-487-1212). And if you buy them in advance, you save a few bucks, as advance tickets are $10 plus Ticketmaster's service fee. They are $15 at the door on the day of the event, if there are even any left.
Also, here's some other interesting news.
There will be tailgating at the March 22nd bout! Yes, you read that right. Some industrious fans took it upon themselves to get the OK from the KEC Director of Security, and we're cleared to tailgate in Lot H or G, inside of Gate 4, which is the one on Crittenden Drive where UofL football tailgating typically happens. Though this location is technically on the other side of the fairgrounds from West Hall, maybe if we all turn out and show them that DCRG fans can tailgate responsibly, we can get them to let us doing it a little closer to West Hall in the future. Regardless, it's pretty cool that they are allowing this, so let's take advantage!
Here's all the tailgating details: It starts at 1:30 p.m. and goes til about 5:30 p.m., so tailgaters still have time to get the good seats at the bout. The KY State Fair Board asks that we "have fun but not be disorderly," NO KEGS ALLOWED, and we must clean up after ourselves. Security can ask us to leave otherwise. But I think it's a fabulous idea, and I know some of the DCRG Thunder will definitely be out to support. Feel free to bring food and beer, and/or just come on out and join us for some pre-bout fun!
And don't forget about the After Party! Directly after the bout, at the Monkey Wrench. Bout ticket stubs get you in for free, or it's a $3 donation to the Kosair Children's Hospital. DJ Kim Sorise will be in the house, and much debauchery will be had by all.
Other news:
DCRG will be in the Ancient Order of Hibernians St. Patrick's Day Parade this Saturday, March 15th. It starts at 3 p.m. and traverses the Baxter/Bardstown Road route from Broadway to Midcity Mall. Don your green and partake of some Irish pride with us!
Tickets for our April 5th bout SPRING FLING against the Cincinnati Rollergirls will be going on sale Saturday March 22nd, the day of the Southern Hostility bout. So this is just a heads-up, since it's a pretty quick turnaround between these two bouts. Get 'em the 22nd when you come to the KEC for Southern Hostility, or we'll post the link whenever the ticket sales go live.
Did you know DCRG has a new Facebook page ? You probably already knew we have a MySpace page, but now we're on Facebook too! Visit the page and become our fan!
Alright. Now you have ALL the scoop. Hope to see you all very soon!
It's taken us a few weeks to recuperate from that amazing SOLD OUT bout at the beginning of the month where your Derby City Rollergirls decimated the Rollergirls of Southern Indiana (ROSI), 189-63. I know I personally almost lost my voice, screaming and yelling from the suicide seats. And that After Party at the Monkey Wrench - ooowee, now THAT was a good time!
But seriously, big thanks to the ROSI's for making the trek, playing hard and being such great sports. They are a classy bunch, those gals. And to any fans who might be reading this who didn't get in to the bout (there were hundreds turned away at the door), we're truly sorry and we hope you'll return for the upcoming bout on March 22nd. We had no idea we'd get such a tremendous response. Next bout, we'll be increasing the capacity to 1200, but just to be safe, EVERYONE SHOULD REALLY GET ADVANCE TICKETS.
I'll repeat that again further down the page, with all the bout info.
But first, since it's such a long stretch between bouts (scheduling at the KY Expo Center is tricky!), we're doing another Open Skate: Broken Hearts & Body Parts this Sunday, so folks can come on out and get to know all their favorite rollergirls - maybe even learn a move or two. It's from 5:30pm - 8pm at Treo Roller Rink (721 Gagel Ave), with Kim Sorise spinning all your favorite roller skating jams, and costs $5 to get in, with all proceeds going towards the costs of the next bout. So tell all your friends and come skate with the DCRG!
Sadly, it's our last public event at Treo Roller Rink, as they are having to shut down due to noise and other complaints with folks in their neighborhood. The league will move to Skate Odyssey in Clarksville, Indiana, beginning March 3rd, for training and all non-bout skating events.
OK. And now for the bout info. Titled Southern Hostility, your DCRG will take on the Blue Ridge Rollergirls of Asheville, NC, Saturday, March 22nd at the KY Expo Center's West Hall (937 Phillips Lane). Doors will again open at 5:30pm, with the bout starting at 7pm. If you were there last time, then you know the place fills up, so get there early, especially if you want rink-side suicide seats or the front row of chairs.
They will be $15 at the door the day of the event, but judging from last time, it's hard to say if there will even be tickets left by then, so I'd advise you to BUY ADVANCE TICKETS if you know you want to be there. And if you are waiting to buy them at the door, you better get there early or risk being turned away. (If it sells out ahead of time, we'll try to let you know via this newsletter.)
Doesn't Kimmy Crippler look awesomely devious in the bout poster, below?
That's all I got for now. More details coming soon, but in the mean time, we hope to see you Sunday at the Open Skate, and... don't forget, ADVANCE TICKETS GO ON SALE FRIDAY AT 10AM!!
(And if your friends aren't on the mailing list, forward this out to them!)
Yes, roller derby fans, we are but two days away from the beginning of DCRG's much-anticipated second season. Two days away from LOVE HURTS: Derby City Rollergirls vs Rollergirls of Southern Indiana (Evansville). Two days away from a big, bold new venue (the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center's West Hall) with better and more seating, and BEER! Two days away from hot chicks, hard wood (well it's really concrete now at the new venue, but we won't quibble), and heavy-hitting flat track roller derby action.
Do you have your tickets yet? It's not too late to get the cheaper advance price of $10 + service fee. You can get your tickets at any Ticketmaster outlet, by phone (502-361-3100 or 1-800-487-1212), or at the KEC Ticket Office, located to the right of Freedom Hall. Or you can buy them online here:
Tickets will be $15 at the door the
night of the event. Parking is $5. Doors open at 5:30pm and the bout starts at 7pm. Get there early for those suicide seats (18+ only please), and of course to get all your official DCRG merchandise! Bout entertainment includes the always-awesome DJ Kim Sorise, DCRG's Official DJ, plus intermission performances by Louisville's own Brigid Kaelin.
And don't forget the After Party. Continuing last season's fine tradition, the official after party will be at the Monkey Wrench(1025 Barret
Ave @ Winter). Mix, mingle and share in victory toasts with all your favorite Derby City Rollergirls! Hang on to those bout ticket stubs, because they'll get you into the after party for free; for everyone else, it's $3, with proceeds going to the survivors of last week's devastating fire at the LAVA House. (We'll also be passing the hat at the bout for them.)
One last reminder - DCRG's unofficial fan club the DCRG Thunder will be doing a little pre-bout tailgating starting at 5:30pm. Wear your black and red DCRG gear and bring those noisemakers, for sure! So there you have it. All the details. Are you ready? Because we are!!!
Things are getting really exciting, leading up to DCRG's season opening bout "LOVE HURTS" against the Rollergirls of Southern Indiana on Saturday February 2nd. All the bout and ticket details are below, but first we want to tell you:
If you're doing the FAT Friday Trolley Hop tonight, look for DCRG along the way! Some of the skaters will be out flyering for the bout on Frankfort Avenue, so keep your eyes open for them!
Then tomorrow night, DCRG will be working the bar at Headliner's for the Halfway To Forecastle mini-festival. All the details are on the Forecastle website, but I hope you already got your ticket, because the event is officially sold out!
Aside from these public appearances, here's a few more things to hold you over until February 2nd:
Big thanks to John Wurth of Hatch Creative (one of our sponsors) for taking such awesome pics of all the rollergirls in their spankin' new uniforms. Versions of these same pics will be in our programs at the bouts this year, too. DCRG <3's John Wurth!
Finally, take a look at this amazing promotional video shot by Daniel DeBiasi, who got out on the rink with a camera and skated amongst the rollergirls during a recent hard-hitting practice. Learn the rules of roller derby, what the DCRG skaters love about playing the sport, and what women have to do to become a rollergirl. It's six heart-pounding minutes of psyche-you-up for DCRG's second season!
So, are you pumped up and ready for some roller derby now? I thought so. Well it's the perfect time to go ahead and get your tickets to the first bout of the season - let the league know YOU JUST CAN"T WAIT for some women's flat track roller derby action! General Admission advance tickets for the LOVE HURTS: DCRG vs. Rollergirls of Southern Indiana bout at 7pm, Saturday, February 2nd at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center's West Hall (937 Phillips Lane) can be bought via Ticketmaster at this link:
Tickets can also be purchased at any Ticketmaster outlet, by phone (502-361-3100 or 1-800-487-1212), or at the KEC Ticket Office, located to the right of Freedom Hall. Advance tix are $10 plus service fee, or they are $15 at the door the night of the event. Doors open at 5:30pm and the bout starts at 7pm.
DCRG's official DJ, Kim Sorise, is back this season to pump up the crowds and skaters before and during the bout, plus there'll be halftime entertainment TBA. And yes, fans, there will now be BEER served at the bouts!!
So do a little tailgating with the DCRG Thunder before the bout, have some beers while cheering DCRG on during the bout, and then come share in the victory toasts at the Monkey Wrench (1025 Barret Ave @ Winter) at the official After Party.
OK, that was a lot of information! But we want to make sure everybody's in the loop. You'll probably get one more reminder next week, but then... IT'S ON!
Are you getting excited? We are!
Well, we told you we'd let you know when tickets were available for
your Derby City Roller Girls ' first bout of the season, and so here we
are. You can NOW get your General Admission advance tickets for the LOVE HURTS: DCRG vs. Rollergirls of Southern Indiana
bout on Saturday, February 2nd at the Kentucky Fair & Exposition Center's West Hall (937 Phillips Lane) via Ticketmaster.com through this link:

the bout, plus there'll be halftime entertainment TBA. Bouts are still
all ages and family-friendly, but the same rules as always apply for
the rink-side "suicide seats" - they are reserved for 18 years of age
and older, due to the very real potential of injury. And yes, we will
reiterate - there will now be BEER served at the bouts!! Woo hoo!
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: DCRG needs you! If you'd like to volunteer to help with production on bout day, please contact Olivia Hurtin at: oliviahurtin@...

please consider helping us out. Volunteers get into the bout for free

track roller derby. You know you wanna!

Oh, and of course, all the lovely DCRG merch will be for sale (makes great Christmas gifts!), including the brand new CALENDAR!
So come and get your drink on, witness the carnage of full contact musical chairs, win some prizes, and do some holiday shopping with your Derby City Rollergirls!! We'll see you there!
Oops - I think I've eaten too much turkey today. I forgot the URL to
the Injured Skater Fund, so you can donate:
https://www.fundable.com/groupactions/groupaction.2007-10-30.9989250161
There ya go. Thanks again to all who have and who will yet still
pledge to help Raquel Squelch and all future injured skaters.
I know everyone's probably in the middle of their turkey (or tofurkey)
dinner as I type this (Happy Thanksgiving!), but I promised further
details on DCRG's participation in tomorrow's Light Up Louisville
Parade, so here you are:
Light Up Louisville Winter Wonderland Parade Sponsored by Wendy's.
4:00pm–5:00pm: Jefferson Street from 7th Street east to 4th Street
through 4th Street Live! Featuring approximately 80 entrants,
including entertainers, bands, carolers, children's groups and civic
groups.
DCRG are unit #17 and will be on skates/foot. So come on out tomorrow
afternoon and kick off your holiday season with your Derby City
Rollergirls!
I also wanted to mention we have 2 days and 5 hours left on our
Injured Skater Fund drive. As I write this, we're at $880, only $120
shy of our $1000 goal! Thank you so much to everyone who has pledged
money thus far! And if you haven't gotten around to it yet, now would
be the time! Even $10 gets us that much closer to making our goal.
(Remember, the way Fundable works, if we don't make our goal, we don't
get any of the money! So please consider throwing a little bit into
the pot for Raquel Squelch and all future injured skaters!)
OK. That's it! Happy Thanksgiving!
Even though it's going to be a while before there's another bout to look forward to, we promised there would be some upcoming events. And there are! This coming Sunday, in fact, is the first - a good old fashioned roller skating party at our favorite roller rink. Doesn't that sound like fun?
Come on - you know you wanna. So do it! Come out and skate with your Derby City Rollergirls this Sunday, November 18th, from 6-8pm at Treo Roller Rink (721 Gagel Ave.). DCRG is holding their first annual Skatie Hawkins Skate Party, so this is your chance to come steal a dance with your favorite rollergirl! For only $5 (or $3 with a canned product), you can share the rink with Louisville's own roller derby stars. All ages are welcome, and remember, skate at your own risk!
(Check out our awesome poster for this event, at the bottom of this email!)
Also coming up, DCRG will be skating in the Light Up Louisville Parade on Friday, November 23rd (the day after Thanksgiving). The parade starts at 4pm downtown - we'll have to update you later with the exact route and any further details. But put it down in your calendar now!
And... save the date for our second annual Christmas bash, Friday, December 7th, from 9pm - 2am at the Monkey Wrench. We'll be holding another GIANT raffle with tons of prizes, DJ Kim Sorise will be in the house, and yes, the wildly popular musical chairs will be back!!! Last year's was quite a doozy, as some of you will remember (or maybe not!), and this year's promises to be even more off the hook! More details coming soon.
One last thing, on a more serious note. Thanks so much to all who have so far donated to the Injured Skater Fund, to help out Raquel Squelch and future injured skaters. We still have 12 days left on our fundraising drive, and we're almost half way to our goal of $1000. If you haven't thrown $10 or $20 (or more!) into the pot yet, please consider doing so in the next 12 days so that we can make sure Squelchy's bills are paid and we have a little nest egg for the next rollergirl who goes down.
The donation page is here: https://www.fundable.com/groupactions/groupaction.2007-10-30.9989250161. No money will be collected until we reach our goal, so help us get there!
OK, I think that's it for now. See you this Sunday!!
Wow, that was quite a bout on Saturday night! It was great to see so many Louisville faces out at Skatetown USA in West Chester, Ohio - we nearly outnumbered Riverside's fans - and so much fun to cheer our DCRG Allstars on to such a smashing victory!
For those who weren't there, the final score was: DCRG Allstars 108, Riverside Jailhouse Rock-Its 17. Our girls skated amazingly, dominating from the first jam to the last. There was a little bit of drama at the beginning of the night - a rather long delay while awaiting an EMT and an ambulance to be on standby (standard procedure for any roller derby bout) - but the bout finally got rolling around 9:15pm or so. It was worth waiting for.
Riverside should be commended, however, for hanging tough in their first inter-league bout, especially since they were skating so short, with only 9 players. But DCRG's experience, speed and power was simply no match for the young league. It was so satisfying to see how far both our offense and defense have come since that first bout last May against Naptown, when we were the ones on the losing end of a 100+ point spread.
Sadly, however, we did have a serious injury - and we sure were glad that we waited for that EMT and ambulance. Raquel Squelch, DCRG Allstar skater and 2006-07 Captain of the Red Menace, broke one bone in her left calf and cracked another one. She'll be in a cast for the next six weeks. Health insurance will cover most of the costs of the actual injury, but Squelchy makes her living as a server at Ramsi's - thus, she'll be without income during her healing period. (She'll be able to keep doing her tattoo internship, but she doesn't get paid at that job.)
So, we've set up a Fundable account for our newInjured Skater Fund. As a member of the DCRG family, please help us with a donation, to help cover basic living expenses for incidents like these. We love roller derby, but there's no question it's a full-contact sport; broken bones and other serious injuries come our way pretty regularly, and we believe roller derby shouldn't put anyone (deeply) into debt.
Your donation will help pay Squelchy's rent and utilities until she's able to be back up on her feet again, working. Any additional cash she doesn't use will be banked for the next person that needs it.
Pledgers will receive our grateful thanks and a warm fuzzy feeling. Oh, and the fundraiser only runs for 20 days... so pledge early and often. And please post this link on your MySpace, Livejournal, blog or anywhere else that will help publicize it:
OK, that's it for now. There won't be any more post-season bouts - you'll have to wait until the 2008 season begins in February to get your roller derby fix. But you'll be hearing from us again soon, as we've got lots of parties, fundraisers, and other events planned between now and February.
Thanks for all your support this past season. If you've enjoyed yourself so far, stick around... next season is gonna blow your mind!
OK, I've been a horribly negligent rollergroupie and newsletter writer. Please forgive me. I have no excuse.
But it's not too late to make your plans to road trip over to Newport, KY (across the river from Cincinnati) for your Derby City Rollergirls ' away bout THIS SATURDAY, October 27th!! The DCRG all-star travel team takes on the Riverside Rollergirls ' Jailhouse Rock-its in Riverside's first ever inter-league bout.
Deemed Organ Harvest (love that ability to work in both an autumnal AND Halloween theme!), this bout is history in the making, as it's the first time two Kentucky roller derby leagues have battled.
Tickets are $7 in advance online (here: http://www.unitedweskate.com/organharvest/ ) or $10 at the door. (If you do buy your tickets online, please write "GO DCRG" in the comment/message field when purchasing, and DCRG will get a percentage of our ticket sales.) And this is cool - kids get in free if they wear a Halloween costume!
Doors at 7:30 pm, bout starts at 8pm. Located at Skatetown USA, 8730 Pavilion, West Chester, OH. Directions can be found on Riverside's website, http://www.unitedweskate.com.
So come cheer your Derby City Rollergirls on in this battle for the bluegrass!!
This is just a last-minute reminder that this Sunday, Sept. 9th, is THE FINAL THROWDOWN... the last and championship bout of the inaugural season for your Derby City Roller Girls . The Red Menace vs. The Jackie O'Nasties... who wants it more? You gotta be there to find out!

OK. Consider yourselves reminded. See you there!
PS: DCRG "merch bitch" MaMalicious wants me to let everyone know that the super-cool DCRG hoodies sporting Jeral Tidwell's amazing DCRG poster design on the back are back in stock! We haven't had them since last winter, so if you didn't get one last time, better scoop one up right away... cuz they go pretty fast. $30 each, at the bout.
Wasn't that August bout amazing? Our DCRG played the heck outta Knoxville's Hard Knox, showing just how far we've come since the beginning of the season. What a night!
Well it's almost time for another bout... but this time, it's the LAST BOUT OF THE SEASON! I know, I can hardly believe it. The debut season of the Derby City Roller Girls is almost over! Well, all the more reason to get your butt up off the sofa on Sunday, September 9th and head on over to Treo Roller Rink for...
THE FINAL THROW-DOWN! (Also known as The Final Bout-Down!)
Yep. The Red Menace vs. The Jackie O'Nasties, battling it out til the bitter end. Doors open at 6pm, bout begins at 7pm. Get there early for those suicide seats (18+ only, please), and please do bring your posters/signs, noisemakers and screaming voice. (More cowbell!) DCRG team DJ Kim Sorise will be in the house again with the before, during, and after-bout music, and this month DCRG will be collecting donations for friend-of-the-league and all-around good-guy Mike Welch, to help him with his medical expenses for brain injuries sustained from an assault in April.
Tickets for the bout are $10 (plus service fee) in advance, online, and also with NO service fee at local indie businesses like the Why Louisville Store (1609 1/2 Bardstown Road), Atomic Saucer (1000 E. Oak St.), Carmichael's Books (2720 Frankfort Ave. or 1295 Bardstown Rd.), and Derby City Espresso (331 E. Market St.). (Available as of tomorrow.) You can also get them in person, directly from a real live rollergirl (!), on Saturday Sept. 8th, at the Original Highlands Art and Music Festival (900 block of Baxter). They'll be $15 cold hard cash at the door, the night of the bout, so it pays off to get 'em ahead of time.
And don't forget the after-party at the Monkey Wrench (1025 Barret @ Winter) right after the bout. A suggested $5 donation gets you in the door, with all proceeds going to the aforementioned Mike Welch fund . The Monkey Wrench has great food and drink specials, so what better way to unwind after the bout and meet-and-greet with your favorite rollergirl(s)?
Alright. I think that's all the details. So get your tickets now, and be on the lookout for this bout poster up around town, designed by the fabulous Bill Green:
It's gonna be a chilla, and a killa, and a thrilla, when I get the
gorillas from knoxvilla.
Hey there roller derby fans -
It's that time again! If you think it's hot now, things are about to
get a whole lot hotter Sunday, August 12th at Treo Roller Rink (721
Gagel Ave.). Your DCRG will be facing their toughest competition yet,
the Hard Knox Rollergirls from Knoxville, TN.
This double-header features The Jackie O'Nasties and The Red Menace,
playing two of Hard Knox's travel teams. Both bouts of the
double-header are covered by the same ticket, and each bout will
consist of two twenty-minute periods (as opposed to the regular
three-period bout). So, you know, more roller derby bang for your buck
this time! How about that?!
Advance tickets can be purchased online right now for $10 plus
service fee, or they will be $15 at the door (cash only).
Doors at Treo open at 6pm, and the first bout of the double-header
starts at 7pm sharp. Get there early for those suicide seats (18+
only, please), and please do bring your posters/signs, noisemakers and
screaming voice. (More cowbell!) DCRG team DJ Kim Sorise will be in
the house again with the before, during, and after-bout music, as well
as at the after-party.
Back to the after-party - of course it is ON at the Monkey Wrench
(1025 Barret @ Winter) right after the bout. The Monkey Wrench has
great food and drink specials, so what better way to unwind after the
bout and meet-and-greet with your favorite rollergirl(s) ?
OK. I think that's it for now. As always, more info and all the links
you need at: http://www.derbycityrollergirls.com.
Just a quick reminder that your Derby City Rollergirls will be slinging beer, wine and merch at Forecastle Festival today and tomorrow, down on the Belvedere. The festival goes on rain or shine, so break out the rain gear and come on down and hang out with us. We promise you a good time!
And don't forget, advance tickets are now on sale online for THE THRILLA IN THE VILLE-A, our next bout against Knoxville's Hard Knox Rollergirls on Sunday, August 12th. It's our last interleague bout, and second-to-last bout of the entire season, so don't miss it!
Are you still riding high from that last double-header bout night against Cleveland? I know we are! What an amazing night! Let's hear it for the Red Menace and the Jackie O'Nasties!!! DC-RG!!
Though the Red Menace lost, they played hard despite several injuries - they never gave up and kept fighting til the end. And the Jackies - well, they wiped the floor with some Cleveland! It was all so thrilling to watch. And what a fun after party at the Monkey Wrench! Really, it was an outstanding night all around.
So, as we all wait patiently for the next bout - The Thrilla in the Ville-a, another double header vs. Knoxville's Hard Knox Rollergirls, on Sunday August 12th at Treo (advance tickets now on sale! ) - in the mean time, you can hang out with all your favorite Derby City Rollergirls for the next two weekends in a row at some fabulous summertime events here in Louisville.
This Saturday (July 21st), DCRG will have a booth at Lebowski Fest , at the Garden Party (Executive Lawn), which starts at 4pm. Aside from the sale of our ever-coveted DCRG merch, rumor has it that the spanking/kissing/headlock booth will be back, and there might also be a return of the popular bowling-through-rollergirls'-legs! And who knows what else DCRG will come up with. Oh yeah, and there's lots of cool bands, toe-pops, white russian cupcakes, and more... all for $10. So come join us for some ridiculous Lebowski-themed fun!
Next weekend (Friday July 27th and Saturday July 28th), DCRG will be all over Forecastle Festival down on the Belvedere. DCRG will be staffing all the beer trucks, wine tents, and the VIP area, so be sure to tip your rollergirls generously when quenching your thirst! And of course, we'll have a booth selling our always-in-demand merch - t-shirts, tanks, stickers, patches, posters and more! You can get all the scoop on Forecastle on their website (link above).
And just to get you psyched up for the next bout, here's a sneak peak at the bout poster:

And don't forget about the after-party, either. Come drink and be merry with the DCRG at the Monkey Wrench (Barret @ Winter) after the bout. $5 for Toys For Tots gets you in, and great food, drink, and beats by Kim Sorise will keep you there!
Have you seen our bout poster yet ? It's awesome! All the details are on it - or you can just visit our website for more information.
Yes, you read that correctly. The Nightmare Before Christmas In July. That's the name and the theme of the next bout, coming up real soon on Sunday, July 8th at Treo Roller Rink (721 Gagel Ave.). One part Halloween, one part Christmas, and ALL ROLLER DERBY ALL THE TIME!! DCRG is hosting Cleveland's Burning River Rollergirls on our home turf, and we couldn't be more excited.
It's our first double-header, too. Both DCRG league teams, The Jackie O'Nasties and The Red Menace, will be competing, playing two of Burning River's all-star travel teams, culled from their four league teams. Both bouts of the double-header are covered by the same ticket, and each bout will consist of two twenty-minute periods (as opposed to the regular three-period bout). So, you know, more roller derby bang for your buck this time! How about that?!
Starting next week, advance tickets will be available locally at area businesses the Atomic Saucer (1000 East Oak St.) and the Why Louisville Store (1609 1/2 Bardstown Road)for $10 (cash only). DCRG team DJ Kim Sorise will be in the house again with the before, during, and after-bout music, as well as at the after-party.
In keeping with the "Christmas In July" portion of the theme, DCRG will be collecting money and toys for the Toys For Tots program. Everyone who brings a toy to the bout will get a free DCRG bumper sticker! Of course, cash contributions will also be greatly appreciated.
Back to the after-party - of course it is ON at the Monkey Wrench (1025 Barret @ Winter) right after the bout. A suggested $5 donation gets you in the door, with all proceeds going to Toys For Tots. The Monkey Wrench has great food and drink specials, so what better way to unwind after the bout and meet-and-greet with your favorite rollergirl(s)?
Oh, and I almost forgot! Definitely come out and join us for some summer outdoor fun. We'll have merch and advance tickets for sale.
How 'bout that bout Sunday night? Our girls were so awesome!
For
anyone who wasn't there, don't let the final score fool ya (85-27) -
though we technically lost, it's no indication of the level of
competition we brought to the rink. After the bout, one of our players
said, "It was the kind of bout where the points really don't matter,"
and that was so true. To see how far our Derby City Rollergirls have
come in just one short month since their first bout with Naptown in
May, well, it was just simply incredible. DCRG made the Tornado Sirens
earn every single point Sunday night. They hit them hard and hit them
often. And they weren't scared to get down and dirty with them. DCRG
even outscored NRG in the second period, and held them to well under
100 points overall - only one other team Naptown played all season was
able to do that. That's definitely something to be very proud of!
So despite the loss, the Bluegrass did indeed Strike Back. We
had a pretty full house at Treo Roller Rink to witness the bout -
including a busload of noisy crazies from Indianapolis! - and the
energy in that place was positively explosive. DCRG fans came out in
full force to support, armed with posters, signs, cowbells and even
airhorns. Special thanks to all our wonderful volunteers who helped out
on bout production. And thanks to every one of you who were there in
the audience, cheering the DCRG on. And for those who weren't there -
what are you waiting for?
(Pics from the bout will be uploaded to our gallery page on the website - check back in a day or so if they aren't there by the time you read this.)
Speaking of the next bout, it will be July 8th at Treo Roller Rink, an intra-league bout between The Jackie O'Nasties and The Red Menace
with a
Christmas in July
theme, and with Toys For Tots as our sponsored organization. Tickets
will go on sale soon - we'll be sure to let you know via this
newsletter. But for now, put it on your calendar so you don't make
other plans!
(You can keep up with all the DCRG events via our online events calendar.)

This Sunday, June 10th, The Bluegrass will indeed Strike Back at Treo Roller Rink (721 Gagel Ave.) at 7pm (doorsopen at 6pm). Our rollergirls have been training hard to take their revenge on the Tornado Sirens, and you won't want to miss it!!
Advance tickets are still available at a discounted rate of $11 and some change ($10 + service fee), and as long as the bout doesn't sell out ahead of time, you can always get your tickets at the door on Sunday, for $15 (cash only). Since our theme is "The Bluegrass Strikes Back," we have a special promotion running for anyone who gets all festive and shows up in their Star Wars garb - a free DCRG bumper sticker!! Plus we'll have special themed promotional goodies to hand out to the early birds who get to the rink before we run out, so the force can be with you! Let's see those suicide seats packed this time, ok?!!! Posters, signs, noisemakers, and pom-poms are highly encouraged!!!
(By the way, Naptown is reportedly bringing down a few busloads of fans, so if you want suicide seats - or any seat - you better get there when the doors open!)
Bout music will be provided by DCRG team DJ Kim Sorise, and the league will have all their branded merchandise there for sale, including stickers, patches, posters, t-shirts and tanks... plus brand spankin' new team t-shirts for the Jackie O'Nasties and the Red Menace!!
Afterwards, come party with the DCRG at the Monkey Wrench (Barret at Winter). Suggested donation at the door is $5, with all proceeds going to the Kentucky Humane Society. DCRG team DJ Kim Sorise will again be in the house, providing the bumpin' soundtrack to the celebration.
There are several more upcoming events throughout the rest of June on the DCRG calendar that you won't want to miss:
Friday, June 15th: Join the DCRG for the Kentuckiana Pride Festival Parade. Thanks for reading down this far, and we hope to see you at the bout on Sunday!
In our haste to get the newsletter out yesterday, there was some confusion about the "Skate with the DCRG" event happening tonight at Treo Roller Rink . But we are pleased to set the record straight:
The hours are 8-12pm and it cost $1 admission for everybody! So come on out and celebrate Mel O'Drama's birthday with her and the rest of the DCRG at a good ole' fashioned roller skating party! (721 Gagel Ave. - 502-363-TREO)
And in other exciting news, tickets for the next bout, our grudge match with Naptown's Tornado Sirens on Sunday June 10th at Treo, can now be purchased online for $10 (plus service fee):
Well, if you were at Treo
Roller Rink on Sunday night, then you know just how exciting The Derby
City Rollergirls ' debut intra-league bout The Cold War Clash was! The
Jackie O'Nasties ended up outscoring The Red Menace 135-87 to take the
season-opening win, but both teams skated hard and played tough, and
everyone in the league is to be commended on a job well done. The crowd
of 500+ really got into it, too, with lots of fans bringing signs,
waving pom-poms and screaming their heads off for their favorite
players. The atmosphere in Treo was positively electric - especially in
the "suicide" seats, where several audience members got inadvertently
pulled into the action by skaters careening out of bounds. (We're happy
to report there were no injuries, however!)
After the bout, skaters, friends, family and fans gathered at
the Monkey Wrench for a well-deserved celebratory after-party. Luckily
for everyone there, the Monkey Wrench's large-screen TVs captured the
exciting media coverage on both Fox41's and WHAS' nighttime news
broadcasts, sparking many elated toasts.
Many thanks to all who came out to support the DCRG, and who
made donations to The Center for Women and Families on DCRG's behalf at
either the bout or the after-party. And most of all, thanks to all our
wonderful volunteers who helped out with the bout production!
We couldn't have done it without you.
If you weren't at Treo or the Monkey Wrench Sunday night, you
have many more upcoming opportunities to come out and experience the
thrill of women's flat track roller derby in Louisville. For example,
the next bout is right around the corner on Sunday, June 10th... so
mark your calendars now. It will be an inter-league bout with the DCRG
all-star travel team taking revenge on the Naptown Rollergirls' Tornado Sirens
in a home turf rematch entitled "The Bluegrass Strikes Back." The doors
at Treo Roller Rink will open at 6pm and the action starts at 7pm
sharp. Tickets will be available online for $10 (plus service fee) in
just a few days (we'll let you know when and where) and they can be
bought at the door for $15 on the night of the event. More details
coming.
In the mean time, here's another opportunity to mingle with the DCRG -
"Skate with the Rollergirls" at Treo this coming Friday night, May 25th.
$5 gets you in to skate, starting at 9pm, and you can share the hard
wood with some of your favorite DCRG players. Plus, it's our very own Mel
O'Drama's birthday!!!
And, if you think
you've got what it takes to BE a rollergirl, then listen up. DCRG call-outs
will be held Sunday, June 3rd from 3-5pm at Treo Roller Rink. It will be
an informational session where gals can watch a DCRG practice and learn
everything they need to know about becoming a rollergirl. This is your chance to get in on the action first-hand, so don't forget!
Lots more events coming throughout the summer, but this should keep you
busy for now! We'll keep you updated. Thanks again for all your
support!
If you missed DCRG's roller derby debut in The Bourbon Brawl
in Indianapolis last Saturday, you sure missed an amazing event! While
our gals in black and red did not win, the DCRG skated hard and tough
and played an impressive first bout against the Naptown Tornado Sirens.
It was so exciting! DCRG came out of that bout with their heads held
high, with no major injuries and a lot of valuable experience. We're
all so proud of every one of them! Check the gallery page on the DCRG website for photos of the bout and after-party. And mark your calendars for
the re-match with Naptown, Sunday, June 10th, on our home turf here in Louisville. Naptown beware!!
And now, the day you've all been waiting for... THIS SUNDAY, May 20th, is the DCRG's season-opening home bout - The Cold War Clash
:
The Jackie O'Nasties vs. The Red Menace
at Treo Roller Rink (721 Gagel Ave. - formerly Champs on Manslick).
Doors will open at 6pm, and the bout will begin at 7pm. Tickets will be
sold at the door for $15, but you can get them for $10 (plus service fee) online
and not have to worry about the bout selling out (which we hope it
does). Seating is General Admission, on a first come, first served
basis, so get there early if you want those up-close-and-personal
rink-side "suicide" seats. Intermission entertainment will be provided
by the Treo Jam Skaters. The league will have all their fabulous
merchandise there for sale, including stickers, patches, posters,
t-shirts and tanks - so don't forget your wallet!!
After the bout, you can meet-and-greet all your favorite DCRG
players at the official after-party at the Monkey Wrench (1025 Barret
Ave @ Winter). There's a suggested $5 donation at the door, with all proceeds going to The Center For Women and Families
, and DCRG team DJ Kim Sorise will be rockin' the beats. Did we mention there will be drink specials?
Now that that other Derby is over with, it's time to focus on ROLLER Derby! And the DCRG has got an important favor to ask of you all.
Our first home bout - The Cold War Clash between the Jackie O'Nasties and The Red Menace
- is just a mere two and a half weeks away, on Sunday, May 20th at TREO
Roller Rink, and we've got a lot to do in order to put on a production
of that size. This is where YOU come in. Yes, that's right. YOU.
WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! Lots of them.
Duties
available include: ticket sales; passing out programs; taking tickets;
merchandise sales; "suicide seat" enforcer (seats on the floor of the
rink are only available to 18+ year-olds, due to safety concerns);
general set up and take down. There may be more as we grow closer to
the event - the list is growing every day!
Set up will occur at
11am on bout day. All other jobs will be between 6pm - 9pm. (Doors open
at 6pm, the bout starts at 7pm.) Take down will happen right after the
bout, whatever time that ends up being.
If you or someone you know would like to volunteer, please send your/their name, email/phone number and job preference to: oliviahurtin@...
. We will do our best to let everyone do exactly what they want, though that may not be possible in every case.
And
what do you get for volunteering? As if the undying love and gratitude
of the DCRG isn't enough (!), all volunteers will get in free to the
bout, regardless of shift worked. Plus you'll get to be behind the
scenes of one of Louisville's most exciting sporting events ever!
Feel free to forward this out to friends who may not already be on our email list. Talk us up. Spread the word.
Thanks! Your Derby City Rollergirls
PS:
