McCarty, in particular, seems stoked about the opportunity to face his former mates, with whom he collected three Stanley Cups.

"I couldn't have wrote it any better," says McCarty, who suited up for Sunday's regular-season finale in Denver. "I'm excited to be playing those guys. Obviously, the team's changed a lot since I was there. But I still have a lot of buddies there that I accomplished great things with. Just like anything else, it's always sweeter when you beat your close friends."

McCarty on Lemieux: 'You have to give him some respect'
March 26, 2007

This week in Calgary, former Red Wings forward Darren McCarty discussed the epic game of March 26, 1997, between Detroit and Colorado. "First thing," McCarty said, "I can't believe it was 10 years ago. It'll never replace that winning-the-cup game and scoring that goal, but to take just a game in general, (the March 26, 1997, contest) was the greatest game I've ever played in, that I ever saw. Just because it had every ingredient you could ever want. That game had everything."

McCarty on the road again

Great! Thanks :D
His tats look great. I had no idea he had that many. I
remember when he was with Detroit and just getting the
first one with the kids' initials in it. I think
channel 50 was with him.
That tribute one was really cool.

[[[[[[re: oh and yes that's correct Craig was his

I have that book! I haven't read it in a long time
either. I was thinking about picking it up and reading
through it again, but thought I'd ask here first.
Thanks for letting me know.

Hey,
I noticed that to, but at the time couldn't find them.  I just  found them on slam.ca . They have a good shot of him here:

Also a shot from - Darren to be Different

Darren McCarty of the NHL's Calgary Flames displays his tattoo on his left arm for his son Griffin, 10. The one on the right commemorates a friend that died. (MIKE DREW/SUN MEDIA)

Here's a shot I took last Grinder tour 05 - closer look at his tribute to Jim:

As for his injury other then him being out for 6-8 weeks I have yet to find anything new.

Calgary Flames Winger pays homage to friends, family by taking them wherever he goes

Looking at his right arm puts a smile on Darren McCarty's face.

Tattooed on his forearm is a griffin, the legendary half-eagle, half-lion, that symbolizes his 10-year-old son, Griffin.

On the inside of his forearm, he envisions a yet-to-be completed vine, which will feature the birth flowers of his three daughters: Emerson, 8, Avery, 6, and Gracyn, 3.

Motown master gets immortalized

Jean LeFebvre, Calgary Herald

Yzerman's No. 19 hits rafters at The Joe tonight

"I remember my first couple of years," said Flames right-winger Darren McCarty, a longtime Yzerman associate, "there were all these trade rumours of him going to Ottawa because he couldn't be a Scotty Bowman player.

"There was no chance that was going to happen. It was just Scotty tactics."

The Mad Coaching Genius's master plan? Turning the offensively dynamic but somewhat one-dimensional Yzerman into an all-round standout.

"That was his maturation," suggested McCarty. "A great hockey player becoming one of the best two-way players. That was part of his developing into a true leader and one of the best captains the league's ever seen."

BOSTON -- Six games into his tenure as Bruins coach, it's a little early for Dave Lewis to be feeling any heat.
But if there are any doubts about his coaching ability after the Bruins opened the season with just one win on a five-game road trip, there was at least one vocal Lewis defender yesterday at the TD Banknorth. And he wasn't even in Boston's locker room.

Calgary forward Darren McCarty spent the first 11 seasons of his 13-year NHL career in Detroit. There, he played under Lewis, who served as an assistant for 15 years and as head coach for two seasons with the Red Wings.

By RANDY SPORTAK, CALGARY SUN

http://calsun.canoe.ca/Sports/Football/2006/09/17/1852838-sun.html

Fashionably late to training camp by a couple of days, Flames winger Darren McCarty said he's feeling better than ever.

The veteran right-winger, who was allowed to report yesterday for fitness testing in the morning and hit the ice for half a session, said he comes into this season without the black cloud that hovered around him in the past.

"My head's in the right place," he said after skating with his mates at the Max Bell Centre.

It was a year ago McCarty went through the inglorious departure from the Red Wings, bought out because of a contract too expensive for them to fit under the salary cap.

Signing a two-year, $1.6 million US deal with the Flames, he competed while coping with a bankruptcy process personally.

"Last year was a difficult year in a lot of ways," he said.

"We're professionals and have to learn how to separate it but we're human beings also and sometimes your the personal stuff can drag into your game.

"I've done everything and have the support of the organization to do what I need to do to handle a lot of that personal stuff and I couldn't be happier standing here.

"The way I pay them back for their loyalty and support is on the ice and that's what I'm looking to do."

Married in late June, McCarty said most of all his battles are far enough behind him.

"In a lot of ways, yes," he said.

"A few things are tailing me, still hanging on, but are coming to an end. Definitely, my focus and -- I think -- more, my perspective is in the now.

"Mentally, I am in such a better place. There are things happening in my life I can't control and I'm not worrying about those things because they'll come to an end. And the things I can control, I've got a pretty good grasp on and know what I have to do.

"That's a step, a huge step, and I think it'll carry over, into my play and being the leader I can on this team."

It's a Flames team gearing up for what's hoped to be a championship season and looking to fully erase the disappointment of losing out in the first round of the playoffs to Anaheim.

He believes it's much the same to what he went though while part of the Red Wings teams that flamed out in the mid-'90s despite high hopes.

"This is a huge year. It's a very big year for us," he said.

"Last year, we made some huge strides and I think in the overall scheme of things we took a step forward. With the experience we gained, hopefully we can take two steps more."

What part McCarty will play in that remains to be seen. The Flames are deeper on the wings this season and have a handful of youngsters pushing for spots on the roster.

Where he fits on the depth chart will shake out but McCarty will be in tough to play the number of minutes he saw last season.

"That's always the way it is," he said. "We're all part of a bigger goal, winning. As an older guy, it will push you. You have to push the younger guys, too.

"I'm looking to contribute more."

Twelve bands from the Sub Pop roster and an actual NHL player have contributed songs to the soundtrack for 2K Sports' NHL 2K7 video game.

Hot Hot Heat and The Constantines provide Canadian content along with hard-nosed Calgary Flames forward Darren McCarty, who fronts the garage rock/punk band Grinder. Other groups contributing previously released tracks to the cause include Band Of Horses, , Sleater-Kinney and The Postal Service. The Thermals lent "I Hold The Sound," a song off their forthcoming The Blood, The Body, The Machine album, which will arrive in stores before the video game hits shelves in September.

The game company and Matador worked together earlier this year to come up with songs for the Major League Baseball 2K6 game, and having 12 Sub Pop acts on NHL 2K7 shows 2K's commitment to the music component of its products.

"Sub Pop is the leader in bringing underground sound to the mainstream without compromising their integrity," says Tim Rosa, 2K's director of brand and lifestyle marketing. "Because we share this mindset when developing our games, NHL 2K7 is the perfect vehicle for Sub Pop to stay true to its vision."

"While Sub Pop and hockey are rarely mentioned in the same breath, the vibe of our music really suits the action of NHL 2K7," says Sub Pop publicity/marketing director Steve Manning. "Because 2K Sports values authenticity in its games with the same passion we treasure authenticity in our artists, we knew this partnership would resonate with fans of both the sport and our music."

NHL 2K7 will be released in September on Xbox 360, Xbox and PlayStation 2. A PlayStation 3 version is expected later in the year.

Here are the songs on NHL 2K7:

  • Arlo — "Runaround"
  • Band Of Horses — "Wicked Gil"

I have heard some people say he seems too good for the fans or comes
across with that attitude BUT I haven't seen that at all. I've only
met him once personally but he was joking around with me and my
friends. I met him at a car show in Michigan he did I believe a year
or two ago and it was the weekend before my birthday so one of my best
friends told him that they had brought me all the way from Canada just
to see him for my birthday and he made a joke. Some how we got onto
singing Oh Canada and he sang a bit and looked at my friends but they
didn't know the rest and he joked and said "next time we see each
other you better know it all."

I saw him in Toronto with Grinder and although we didn't stay after he
was loving the fact that my two friends I was with and I were in
Detroit gear singing along to the songs when there was maybe 20 people
in the club. He kept singing to us and ignoring the guy who was doing
some messed up dancing thing because he was drunk. He even said thank
you to us at the end of the show.:)

GreenField Village and took pic's with the kids and talked to everyone
and a special thanks to him for what he said about me...a recovering
cancer person as well as my mother who was just diagnosed with breast
cancer.........I knew I loved that MAN for a reason....He's the
greatest.....thanks everyone for listening to me blab...lol
