Flames burn Ducks in OT
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Games/2006/04/22/1544955-cp.html
CALGARY (CP) - Darren McCarty showed the poise of a player with 151
NHL playoff games on his resume.
The Calgary forward scored in overtime to power the Flames to a 2-1
win over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks Friday in the opening game of their
playoff series.
McCarty skated freely into the Ducks zone and calmly one-timed a pass
from Kristian Huselius past Ilya Bryzgalov 9:45 into overtime.
"The best thing about the playoffs is a lot of the times, different
guys get to step up and share the limelight for a night," said
McCarty. "Your studs and your top guys are going usually get it as
they deserve it most of the time but it's nice to chip in when you
can."
McCarty is in his first year with the Flames after spending his
entire career with the Detroit Red Wings.
"I've been fortunate to be in the right spot at the right time in my
career," McCarty said. "You're not going to get too many but if you
get the timely ones, that's what counts. Guys chip in different ways
on this team and I'm just happy to chip in tonight."
Jean-Sebastien Giguere, Anaheim's No. 1 goalie, practised in the
morning but missed the game with what the team called a lower-body
injury. The injury occurred in practice a couple days earlier and
Giguere's status is considered day-to-day.
"Obviously it was a tough game for Giggy to stay out, but we move
on," said Anaheim forward Teemu Selanne, the most dangerous player on
the ice all night leading the Ducks with five shots. "We didn't
expect to win both here. We just have to get ready for Sunday and do
a couple things better and its our game."
Tony Amonte scored in the second period for the Flames while Jeff
Friesen tied it in the third for Anaheim.
"Its a big win and it feels good, but we know we need to get better
and we know its going to get tougher," said Flames captain Jarome
Iginla.
Friesen made it 1-1 with a strange goal 5:17 into the third period.
Breaking down the wing, Rob Niedermayer's attempted pass deflected
off the stick of Calgary defenceman Roman Hamrlik and sailed towards
the Flames net. Friesen batted it out of the air past Miikka
Kiprusoff.
It was only Friesen's second goal in 19 games for the Mighty Ducks
since being acquired from Washington at the trade deadline.
"The result is the biggest negative," said Ducks coach Randy
Carlyle. "Our effort was good, we had chances, but we just didn't
bury the puck."
Opening the playoffs at home for the first time since 1995, Calgary
took the ice to a standing ovation from the sellout crowd of 19,289.
Bryzgalov had only started one of the Ducks final 14 regular season
games, but he didn't look rusty early.
Calgary ran up a 7-0 advantage on the shot clock in the game's first
10 minutes, but the 25-year-old Russian was equal to the task. One of
his best stops came early when he jabbed out a pad to thwart Byron
Ritchie from the top of the crease after the Flames centre was set up
neatly by Chris Simon.
"All the games he played in the regular season, he did his job well,"
said Selanne. "We have lots of confidence in him too and that's a
good sign."
The Flames opened the scoring at 6:17 of the second period when
Iginla's centring pass caromed off the skate of Flames forward
Matthew Lombardi and went straight to a wide open Amonte, who beat
Bryzgalov with a low shot for his 21st career playoff goal.
Kiprusoff finished with 33 saves including 24 over the first two
periods as Calgary opened up a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes despite
being outshot 24-17.
"Without Kiprusoff, this game should be over after two periods,"
Selanne said.
Calgary and Anaheim are the last two teams to represent the Western
Conference in the Stanley Cup final. The Flames lost in seven games
to Tampa Bay in 2003-04 and the Ducks fell to New Jersey the year
before in a series that also went seven games.
Notes: Backing up Bryzgalov was 26-year-old Nathan Marsters, who was
recalled from Portland (AHL) ... Stephane Yelle ranks second on the
Flames in terms of playoff experience at 135 games. Four Flames
(Huselius, Dion Phaneuf, Jamie Lundmark and Ritchie) appeared in
their first career playoff game ... At 147 games, D Scott Niedermayer
leads Anaheim in post-season experience. Including Bryzgalov, nine
Mighty Ducks made their playoff debut ... Calgary entered the game
having lost its opening game of the playoffs eight times in a row.
They last opened with a win in 1988 when they won 9-2 over the Los
Angeles Kings.

Hey Guys,
I just wanted to let you know that on the flames web page they have a
two part up close and personal with Darren. It talks about his band,
of course, and a local hockey team that asked Darren if they could be
called the Grinders. I just thought I would let you know so that you
can check it out. It is right on the main page of the website.

Hey Scott,
I probably would of suggested ebay as well. After Mac was bought out
his items seems to hit the clearance section. You may want to try
Hockeytown Authentics see if they still have some 248-680-0965
Last time I was there was the start of the season and they still did.
Wouldn't hurt to try at least. If I see them anywhere else I'll
let you know.

Well, I actually got to see that dance. It was pretty hilarious, but then again so is Darren. The funniest part was, like the article said, no one even stopped to watch him!You could see some of the guys turn thier head, but they pretty much ignored him the whole time. I laughed the hardest when he stopped to pull his pants back up. You never know how much of the Flames you will see when you order the PPV.
McCarty works hard at being a card
Forward gives mates a respite from the grind
Jean LeFebvre, Calgary Herald
Published: Wednesday, February 08, 2006
The most hilarious part of Darren McCarty's post-victory locker-room
dance Monday night in San Jose wasn't the lively gyrations of his
hips, arms and torso.
It wasn't the pause to hike up his hockey pants, which had begun to
slide toward his ankles.
It wasn't even that he capped the funkadelic display -- beamed to a
pay-per-view TV audience in Alberta -- with a slick grab-the-skate
move.
Instead, the comedic high point is that not a single other occupant
of the visitors' quarters at the Shark Tank was paying the slightest
attention to the grinding winger's boogie. A handful of teammates,
assistant coach Rich Preston, assistant trainer Curly Kurylowich and
team services manager Kelly Chesla all shuffled past the move-
busting McCarty . . . and none of them batted an eyelash.
"They never do, because they've seen me do it so many times," laughs
McCarty, who hopes to repeat his victory shimmy after tonight's home
date with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
The rest of the Flames, it would seem, simply accept their colourful
teammate's eccentricities. Which is not to suggest it's easy to
ignore the guy.
"It's like the eclipse," quips teammate Jason Wiemer. "You're not
supposed to look at it, but you have to. It's not very pretty, so a
lot of guys have to turn their heads."
Wiemer, you should know, has been subjected to more of McCarty's
tomfoolery than any other Flames colleague.
The veterans are stall neighbours in the Flames' Saddledome digs and
one of McCarty's running gags involves calling Wiemer "Jimmy," a
reference to former Sabres, Kings and Bruins defenceman Jim Wiemer,
no relation.
"You've got to put your filter on," chuckles Wiemer. "You let about
half the things he says sink in. He throws enough out there, some of
it will be funny. You learn to deal with him."
There are lots of words to describe McCarty, who perhaps not
coincidentally was born on April Fool's Day. Character. Card. Flake.
There's a little bit of ham in him, too, as anyone who witnessed his
performance in that Sportsnet Grinders Matter commercial will attest.
"He's a great guy," says Wiemer. "Lighthearted -- one of those guys
who likes to keep things loose, who likes to make jokes. He's always
got a wisecrack. He's a lot of fun to be around."
After spending his entire professional life with the Detroit Red
Wings, McCarty has very smoothly made the transition to a new club.
So much so, it seems like he's been in Calgary forever.
"It's a really easy bunch in there," says the 33-year-old
Leamington, Ont., product. "Everybody welcomes you with open arms.
Not just in the room, but also the organization and the city. I felt
very comfortable early. I can't think of being anywhere but here and
being a part of this. We've got an eclectic group, we've got a bunch
of different personalities and it just seems to meld together. I
think it carries it over onto the ice, too. That's important."
McCarty admits the role of locker-room cut-up isn't much of a
stretch for him.
"It's just me being me," he says. "It's pretty much natural. That's
the way I am. I'm a pretty outgoing guy. I have my (down) moments,
but I love to be around the guys. That's the best part -- making
light of each other and busting each other's chops all the time. The
best part is everybody's got a thick skin. Everybody can take a
joke. It's great."
While McCarty enjoys performing for teammates, he swears he didn't
know the TV audience was witnessing his Dance Fever audition Monday
night.
"If I knew the spotlight was on me," he chuckles, "I would have
pulled out some better moves. I would have gone into my bag of
tricks a little bit more."

Thanks to Adam Lebow for sending in the following:
On TSN(Canada's version of ESPN) Off the Record today, Calgary Flames hockey player Darren McCarthy was on a new segment they call 'Next Question', where Landsberg fires off questions to a guest and they can answer or pass. Today, they had NHL player Darren McCarthy. They started the segment out with Landsberg saying that he knows Darren is a big wrestling fan, so who does he like better, Vince McMahon or Stone Cold Steve Austin? Obviously, he goes with Austin. Landsberg moves on and asks if Vince McMahon would be a good coach in the NHL? McCarthy answers that Vince would probably be an 'ok' coach but would probably be great as upper management or an owner.
