I was just looking at the material on Darren McCarty fron the Monitor
in the RGV, and I am so tickled that hockey finally made it there.
That's where I made my first radio debut, at KRIO McAllen. I was in the
newsroom, a 23 year-old war widow with two babies to raise. I took them
to work with me daily. I tried to set fire to the area of South Texas
on hockey, with the help of a dear friend, W. H. Hart, a pro wrestler
who learned to love hockey, though he saw it like Smackdown on Ice. I
worried about my boys getting the wrong message, but by 1973 W. H. and
I had moved on to Tidewater Virginia, and a shot at play-by-play w-for
the Tidewater Wings. We had a good run, it was fun, and now my almost
40-year-old boys love pro wrestling, as well as hockey. You never know
the influence you have, though sometimes it takes years to find out. Go
RGV hockey! That's a great area! Go Darren!
