Mac's back: McCarty appears at Joe for Flames game, expresses
interest in playing again

Darren McCarty was virtually invisible at the beginning of this
season, having dropped off both the NHL radar screen and out of
contact with his present and former teammates. That changed on
Tuesday night as McCarty made an appearance at Joe Louis Arena:
November 28, Detroit Free Press: Former Wing and ex-Flame Darren
McCarty attended the game; he declined an interview but said, "I'm
good," and that he was commuting back and forth between Detroit and
Calgary.
McCarty told the Detroit News's Rob Parker that he's not ready to
retire:
Novembe 28, Detroit News: "I want to play, for sure," McCarty
said. "I'd like to give it a shot and catch on with somebody and
play. I think I can still play, I still think I can bring something
to the team -- that intangible stuff, leadership, a spark."
McCarty, 35, looked good. He said he has a few medical issues to deal
with before he's cleared to play again in January. Then, it'll just
be about getting another opportunity.
"I'm willing to start at the bottom and work my way up, prove
myself," said McCarty, wearing a black hat with Grinder across the
front and a black Lions T-shirt. "I still think there's gas in the
tank."
McCarty's now settled in Calgary after his divorce and subsequent
bankruptcy during the 06-07 season:
"It's been a rough two years," McCarty said. "But it's been important
to get on the right path, get my life in order. I still love the game
and want to play. But it's not the end all, be all."
With Chris Osgood in his corner (Osgood says that McCarty could play
effectively once he "has everything organized), McCarty says that he
doesn't want to end his career on the sour note that was his injury-
marred previous season with Calgary, but if he's not able to find a
job in professional hockey--and, with the NHL's signing deadline
looming on Decmeber 1st, McCarty's only options right now would be
the AHL or Europe--he might want to return to Detroit:
"If I don't play, I'd like to stay involved somehow," said McCarty,
who is interested in radio, television or a front-office job. "This
is where my roots are. It would be great to stay around this area."
