After hearing much about cylinder endshake, its causes and cures in
S&W circles, I started wondering. What is proper endshake in a DW?
If excessive, what's the cure? Also, what's the proper method for
removing the ejector rod and remving the cylinder from the crane?
I love my Pistol But there is 1 problem. Somehow when I was working on
the gun (teardown and clean) I lost the hammer Pivot pin (I dont know
where to get the #.If anyone has or can point me to one I would be
eternally grateful...Oh yea I tried Numerich and Dan Wesson!

Congratulations on your two purchases. I am delighted that people still
find DW revolvers something to relish and enjoy ownership of. I have to
say though it saddens me just a bit to think of this great line of guns
as gone and so collectable. I have owned a few and always bought them
with full intention to use them as they were designed... to be shot.
Certainly, there are not ugly guns, but to relagate one to the glass
case just seems to fly in the face of thier intent. Thier beauty is in
how they shoot. It rather like asking a ballerina to "only stand about
and not harm her legs". The beauty is not her legs, but abilty to use
them such as to delight an audience. I am crossing my fingers that CZ
will consider maintaining the line in some fashion, though I won't be
holding my breath.
When you shoot the "second" one, I hope you feel the excitment that
many of us do. It is one thing to be the owner of a DW, it is many
levels higher to be a shooter.
I have the same gun in stainless, and it shoots awsome
- especially in 44 Special! There'saguy on Gunbroker
who sells the Bullseye spring kit for that gun -
highly recommended.
ENJOY!!

Well, hopefully I will get some good insight from the fellow members
here. I recently just purchased 2 DW 44 mag VH . One is a NIB/never
turned IHSMA commissioned blued 8" model from the late 70's/early 80's
that I bought for a collector's piece. And I just closed a deal on
Gunbroker on same gun but in the stainless variety (because not being
able to shoot the first one would kill me). So when that gets here in
a couple weeks, I will let you all know how it shoots !!

Ummmmm HUH?
Unlike most all other revolvers the the Dan Wesson is in two parts. A
barrel and a shroud. The barrel screws into the frame and the shroud
slides over that and then is secured at the end with a barrel nut.
Now the sight is on the shroud, not the barrel, and the shroud
is "indexed". Now on some level I guess someone could say ( and with
DW owners as they are) would say that you would need to resight the
gun when you remove and then replace the barrel (like it make
s .00001 inch change at 100 yards)... but I don't. I do re-sight when
I swap to a different barrel or shroud as naturally you would. But
even that is minor. I mostly just shoot one of 3 6" barrels or the 8"
barrel, and at 10 to 25 yards ( too spoiled to go to an outdoor range
these days) I don't see much need for adjustments.
I did it with the 357 and love the effect. Just like you said shooting with one
hand is a lot better.
Go try it!
Good luck.
BTW, you could still call the factory and ask.

I need some advise. I have the venerable 744VH, and I'm trying to get
the double action trigger pull down to something respectable (it would
be nice to to actually shoot it with one hand!). I have polished the
internal parts where they contact each other, and I installed a
"Bullseye" spring kit. The trigger pull is better, but I would like to
improve it just a bit more. I was recently sent a spring kit for the .
357 magnum by mistake, and although the trigger spring was different,
the mainspring was exactly the same dimensions, excpt for the wire
coils were much thinner. Just for fun, I installed the .357 mainspring
in my .44, and the trigger pull was really nice (if not too soft). I
was wondering if anyone can tell me if such a thing would work, or if
it would make the gun unfireable. Since it is a reduced tension
spring, I wonder if a "stock" .357 spring would work better.
Does anyone have any experiences with this. If not, I may have to just
take it out to the range and test it out myself.
Thanks,
Rex

I use the tools they have with the gun and have never had a problem.
I own a 357 with the 2,4,6 and 8 inch barrels. I bought them after buying the
gun.
Great guns.

It has been my experience ( 4 DW's ~ 25 years) That part of the fun of
owning and shooting the DW, is perfecting the gap. Basically the gun
will "tell" you what the gap should be. Start with the feeler guage and
if you are inclined work in some. When the gun begins to misbehave, its
too tight.
misbehave = once you fire a shot the hammer/trigger seems to hang
(return slowly). Truth is the cylinder can't turn.

Hey Rex,
Interesting question. One I've pondered myself. One of the smiths at DW told
me to get your gap without including the end gap (lash) between the crane
and the rear of the cylinder. Take up the gap / lash with your fingers, by
pressing forward on the rear of the cylinder, and then gap the barrel.
Having said all that, what I really think you can get away with is the
smallest gap that will allow the cylinder to still turn once it has been
fowled. I could be wrong but I haven't blown up anything yet, "knock on
wood." Now that's a hell of an endorsement.

I have a stainless .44 Magnum. The DW feeler guage is 0.006" thick for
setting the barrel/cylinder gap. I noticed that the cylinder can shift
rearward (axially) along the crane between 0.004" and 0.005", thus
changing the barrel/cylinder gap. The rear detent bearing that centers
the rear of the cylinder (when it is closed) pushes the cylinder
forward and closes this extra gap, but I think it will open the
barrel/cylinder gap again when the gun is fired. When changing
barrels, should I just adjust the barrel/cylinder gap to a light drag
with the feeler guage (to 0.006" as normal), or should I adjust the
gap a bit tighter (say 0.003") to compensate for the 0.004" to 0.005"
shift rearward when the gun is fired?

Yes. That's all that's needed.

Can anyone tell me where I can get a 4" Stainless Steel .44 Mag VH
(Vented/Heavy) barrel and shroud?
I can't find a holster for my 6" barrel, and the thing is too heavy
for daily carry anyway. I can get holsters for the 4" from several
sources, and I think a 4" barrel would be ideal for carry with my
stainless 44VH.
I have tried eBay and Gunbroker, but nothing yet.
Any help is appreciated.
I'm taking a guess, but I think they are MIM.

My question is, Are these parts solid stainless (polishable), or are
they just flash-chromed carbon steel parts (in which case I would
destroy the finish if I polished them)?

Pinetor,
NO drilling or tapping required. Just keep you eyes out for an AIMPOINT
scope mount for the DW. You just remove the rear sight (no big deal) and it
attaches to the sight area and clamps to the top rail. It is simple and rock
solid. If you want to change back, it takes maybe 5 minutes. However, once I
mounted a scope on mine, I decided to leave it on. Besides, it is a good
excuse, I mean reason to buy another DW revolver.
Good luck,
Ron

If you still want to shoot iron sights and your eyes are getting a "little "
old for that kind of stuff try what is called a biopter. It's a pinhole
device that target shooters used to improve their depth of field (front
sight to rear sight). It either clips on to your shooting glasses or has a
suction cup. By looking thru this pinhole your depth of field is improved
like stopping down a camera lens when you go to a smaller f-stop, or when
you squint thru the small hole made by pinching four fingers together. It
really works for punching holes in paper with the old style sights. Nothing
wrong with optics, mind you, have many myself, but there is something
special about drawing down over the top of your pistol barrel. Biopters and
relatively cheep and easy to try. Have fun.

Old eyes are not a problem if you mount a 2x or 4x scope on the DW. I can
shoot mine like I had 20 year old eyes again. These great revolvers are
really fun to shoot with a scope. Try it; you'll like it.

Congratulations on the new "toy". I am on my third DW, having had one
22 with an 8" ventheavy and 2 .357's. My current Pistol Pac "baby"
that I bought new came with 4 barrels and now has 6 ( I added two 6"
in stainless - looks nice on the blued frame with stainless trigger,
hammer, and cylnder lock)... I am sure you will find the DW a great
shooter. The last time I went, I was plinking with a rent-a-cop.. he
had a new H&K in 40... nice gun.. but he couldn't hit a barn with it
past 10 yards. The DW is easy good to 25 (indoor range limit). Well
easy if your eyes are still younge.

And.... you can buy the mount at www.midwayUSA.com
BTW call DW and harrass them into building the 357 and 44 again (607-336-1174).
I bought all the barrels for mine and need a case, they made a nice on
reciently, much nicer than the old yellow padded case, its cut for all the
parts.

I own a 15 (.357) and I bought all the barrels (2,4,6 and 8) and love it. I
want one in .44. Once I get one I will try to find all the barrels.
I emailed CZ and they said they will make the revolvers, but I dont know
which ones.
They said the parts are still available from DW.
Here is the message....
"We will be producing the Dan Wesson Revolvers, but I have no detailed
information at this time. Parts and accessories are available by calling
Dan Wesson in New York at: 607-336-1174
Thank You"

I recently got the "URGE" to buy a new toy, and thought a revolver
would be a nice addition to my (small) handgun collection. After
seeing the prices on current S&W's, (and refusing to settle for a
foriegn made gun **cough** "TUARUS"), I was browsing at a local gun
shop and drooling over some of the overpriced stuff, when my eye
caught glimps of a used DW 744 w/6" VH BBL in stainless. The price was
only $469.00, and the construction was peculiar, so I went home and
did my homework on the web. Seeing what a marvelous piece of
engineering that Dan Wesson revolvers are, I decided to buy the bloody
thing. It needed cleaning in the worst way, and the leading in the
barrel was really heavy, but she cleaned up nicely. WOW! This gun is
HUGE!!!! The condition is perfect, and it was made in Monson. It
didn't come with a barrel tool/feeler guage, so I got one on eBay for
$40 bucks delivered. Parts for the .44's seem to be getting hard to
find, and equally expensive. I'll take her shooting this weekend and
see just what she can do. I must say, I'm really in love with this
Wheel-Gun, and I hope CZ will bring back production of these wonderful
guns! Having found this forum (quite by accident) I just had to join.

I bought a 44VH right after they came out, and stupidly sold it a couple years
later. There are many Pistol Paks in 357 on Gunbroker. I'd love to find a
Pistol Pak in 44 for a decent price.
laremm@... wrote:I bought one in the early 80's. Then a few years ago I
bought the rest of the barrels. So now I have the 2,4,6 and 8 inch barrels for
it.
Never shoot it (time) but I got them.
I would like to buy another one in 44 (mine is in 357) I liked the alaskan
guide, I wouldnt mine getting one.

Simple, CZ bought them out. I think all they want to market the 1911 but
that's it. What a beautifully designed revolver. I don't think anyone has
designed or build one a good, even today.
