On the side of the frame will be where it was manufactured. Monson was
the first place, hence the older gunds and on average, a better quality
gun. Palmer was the second place. A lot of good guns came out of
Palmer but in the years nearing their demise, the quality was spotty as
they tried to punch out a lot of product too quickly.

Some questions to ask:
Adjustable or fixed sights
Internal or external barrel nut
Barrel style, full under lug or lighter weight barrel, also the older
guns had what was called the pork chop barrel where the shroud was
actually the front part of the frame, whereas for the last 20-25 years
the barrel shroud was straight.
barrel length
blue or stainless

As far as dating it from the serial number, there may be an individual
out there with some records but all of the factory records were turned
over to the BATF when the company went under in the earlier 90's. The
new DW has not records of the old guns.
