Shooting in TX   Message List

Well my trip to Texas is now just history. A great time was had by all who
attended our little get-together. We did end goig shooting, but 4 of us (14
attended). Of the 4 of us, I had my DW .357, one guy had a Glock 33 in .357 sig,
and another had a Glock in 9mm. The last guy said that the only gun he had ever
shot was a Bengemin Air rifle.

Unfortunately, the wonderful weather of the early part of the week did not hold
and on saturday, it was cold and blustery. The gun range was inundated with a
skeet tourney, and the range masters were cold, grumpy, and nervous with all the
strangers about. We were allowed to shoot in about 10 minute rotations. While we
waited our turn, I explained to the none gun-owner, how to shoot my DW revolver:

TO shoot my gun, all you have to do is remember to squeeze the grip tightly and
pull the trigger lightly. I showed him how to cock it and to sight it. The
loading and emptying I did for him. We stood at the 10 yard marker, and he
squeezed off his first ever real gun. Six fo six hit the target, though he had
about 8 inch spread. He seemed comfortable and confident. The guy owning the
.357 Glock wanted him to try his gun next. He told the new guy to "work the
action" but was unable to convey what that meant, so I pulled the slide back for
him and got away. The shots mostly missed the target, and the gun twisted and
bucked all over the place. Worse on the second shot the guy moved his left thumb
directly behind the slide, I quickly moved in to get him to stop before he broke
his thumb from the slide kicking back.
While he shot the Glock .357, the Glock .357 owner shot my revolver. Indeed he
shot my gun better than his own, even with out instruction from me. "I have got
to get one of these!"

Later that night he commented how how his gun might be more difficult to shoot,
but that was because it was sooo powerful. Twas more than I could take. I got
him to give me one of his unspent cartridges, and I drew a .38 and a .357 of my
own. Of course both my rounds dwarfed his. I explained that most of what he was
feeling was recoil caused by the heavy slide being thrust back by the
siphoning off of gas from his catridge. I am still not sure he believes that an
old style revolver could ever be as powerful as his modern Glock in .357 sig.
The guy with the GLock in 9mm, pretty much just sat back to let us discuss
things... he had brought an AK47 and .30 carbine to boot.
