I should have been more specific....Dad was in on the ground floor of
design, revision and production of the large frame .40, .41, .44 caliber
models as well as the larger framed .445 , which is not to say that he
was not tasked across the entire DW line during his tenure with the
company.

Are these adaptations particular to the era we're discussing ? I have
not seen these posts, nor am I well read on this forum, or any other DW
forum......

There were dynamic issues in play starting in the mid 80's that may or
may not have played a role in general overall quality. While this has
been an anticipated question, it is the one that requires the most
accurate and responsible replies in my parents minds. To answer such a
general question will take some time, but it will be done. Do you have a
specific known quality issue to address ?
