Well, I always said this was a 50/50 match, with Daniela being the
better tennis-player in general, but Medina Garrigues being a feisty
claycourter, and so it proved.

Daniela won the first set, then staged an amazing comeback from *1-5
in the second, only to play a disastrous tiebreak. She saved 8 set-
points in the second set, and a match-point at *4-5 (30/40) in a
serve-dominated third set, only to be broken in the final game of the
match after over three hours.

The match started at 13:18 CEST, but I was so busy watching Lucie
Šafárová beat Amélie Mauresmo on BBCi, whilst following live scores
for Anna Chakvetadze, that I didn't even notice Daniela's match on
the scoreboard until three games into the match! ;-)

Daniela's back to her old habit of squandering break-points. It would
be a bummer if she were the only member of my Eternal Fanship to lose
before the fourth round (apart from Iroda Tulyaganova, who lost in
qualifying), having played so well in her first round.

Daniela has an excellent record in third sets this year, as she is
physically fitter than the vast majority of players, and that gives
her the confidence that she can outlast them.

Daniela's career where she's saved match-point and won, so it would
be cool if she could do so here. She saved 8 set-points in the second
set.

Oh well - at the start of the tournament, I would certainly have
signed to have 3 out of 4 in the fourth round, as they had all been
injured in the lead-up to the French Open.

three-hour battle against Slovakian 12th seed Daniela Hantuchová,
winning 4-6 7-6 7-5 to reach the fourth of the French Open on
Saturday.

On the warmest day of the championships so far, the 24-year-old from
Valencia wore down the former world number five with some gritty
tennis.

Hantuchová saved one match-point at 4-5 in the deciding set with a
brave drive-volley, but there was no escape two games later when
Garrigues got a second chance.

Medina Garrigues, who has matched her best run at a Grand Slam, will
face Israel's Shahar Pe'er in the last 16 after she beat Katarina
Srebotnik, also in three sets. [Not true: Medina Garrigues faced Ana
Ivanovic, while Pe'er faced Svetlana Kuznetsova.]

First Meeting

The final match of the day on Court 2 sees Slovakia's No.12 seed
Hantuchová do battle with promising Russian teenager Poutchkova in
the pair's first career-meeting. This season has been a memorable one
for the 24-year-old Slovak, the highlight being her spectacular run
at Indian Wells where she blazed through the draw to capture her
second career-title. Poutchkova has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the
past 12 months, making a leap of almost 100 places in the world
rankings, and establishing herself as one of up and coming forces on
the Tour. Hantuchová has never made it beyond the round of 16 at
Roland Garros, and despite not being at her most comfortable on clay,
will come in as the sizeable favourite against a player who only made
her début in Paris on Wednesday.
