5. Fourth-round report: Hantuchová v Clijsters
----------------------------------------------
A self-fulfilling prophecy of endless possibility:
- DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [15,EF] lt. KIM CLIJSTERS [4], 1-6 5-7
I didn't get to see the match this time, but it's only one game
better than her French Open 2006 humiliation. And it's pretty much
the same story: Daniela was facing a bagelstick as Clijsters led 6-1
3-0*, then Clijsters' loss of concentration allowed Daniela back into
it to add a modicum of respectability to the scoreline.
Bren O'Brien for www.australianopen.com:
>>>
The Belgian stole a march with three breaks in the opening set.
Despite a poor first-service percentage from Clijsters, Hantuchová
won just three points on her opponent's serve, and was quickly
trailing.
The second set was a much more even affair, with both players getting
breaks early in the set. Clijsters was looking more at ease on her
serve, and had three match-points in the tenth game, when leading
15/40 and then an advantage. But the Slovakian held in there, saving
all three.
Clijsters raced through her next service-game and then held three
more match-points on 0/40 on the Slovakian's serve.
She conceded the first point, but an errant backhand from Hantuchová
sent Clijsters into final eight in Melbourne for the fourth time.
<<<
Pritha Sarkar (Reuters): "The Belgian romped to a 6-1 7-5 win in 79
minutes after a wild crosscourt error sealed Hantuchová's fate."
Cat's Pajamas: "I'm still satisfied with this results, although it
did showcase Daniela's not so great footwork. :o But I guess compared
to Kim anybody could look horribly slow, still I don't know how but I
think Danka needs to improve that part of her game."
Daniela quotes
--------------
"She was just too good. She's playing incredible tennis right now.
She deserved to win.
"She was just dominating. In every department she was better. She was
just not missing any balls. She doesn't give you anything. So it's
tough to win points against her. If she keeps playing like that, for
sure she can win the whole thing here.
"But I felt I was right in there with her at the end of the second
set. I felt the second set was a proper match - I had my chances
there."
Clijsters quotes
----------------
{before the match}
"I've played Daniela few times already. She's a good player. When you
hit the ball in her zone, she's a very, very clean hitter. I think
her movement is probably her weakness. She's not a great mover out
there.
"Then again, she compensates [by] really going for the lines, playing
really deep shots. I think she doesn't really give you that much of a
chance to go for angles because she hits so deep. That's what you
have to try to do from the minute the ball drops a little bit short.
You have to step in, be aggressive and move her around."
{after the match}
"I let her back into the match. I think I played one looser game.
That made her really step it up. In the second set, she was taking
some more risks and was a bit more aggressive, and it worked for her.
"I think what I did really well in the beginning of the match was
definitely dominating the points. As soon as I got a shorter ball, or
as soon as I felt like the court was opening up for me, [I tried] to
go to that open corner. Even if it's the first or second ball, just
be aggressive - because that's where you can win a lot of points
against her.
"I felt like in the second set she started doing that a bit. She was
coming in, playing serve and volleys. She started being more
aggressive. The way she played in the second is how /I/ usually play
against /her/.
"I feel like I'm seeing the ball well and moving well but it's hard
to say how close to my best I am."
[Re. noisy fans who chanted throughout the match]
"I don't know what they were saying!"
