The evening-sessions of the Australian Open will be televised on BBCi
from 08:30 GMT each day of the tournament (digital viewers press Red
or select the appropriate Freeview-channel - 301 or 302, I don't know
which yet).

My understanding is that this coverage will consist of the women's
match on the evening-session of the Rod Laver Arena (today Serena
Williams v Mara Santangelo), followed by the men's match, followed by
recorded coverage of any Andy Murray match that will have taken place
during the day-session (his matches will also be broadcast live on
BBCi during the British night, and possibly on BBC 1 or BBC 2 if he
reaches the third round - I mention this just in case they happen to
slip any women's tennis into such coverage; in 2002, they showed five
minutes of Daniela Hantuchová against Venus Williams).

Last year, the women's semi-finals took place during the day-session,
and recorded coverage was shown on BBCi following live coverage of
the evening-session that day.

The women's and men's singles-finals will be broadcast live on BBC 1
and BBC 2, respectively.

7.1 First round

I'm just praying that Daniela will have recovered from the viral
infection, with which she pulled out of the Sydney doubles, in time
to play the Australian Open. She hasn't missed a Grand Slam since the
French Open 2000 (when she had to choose between qualifying and
playing on at Strasbourg, where she reached the quarter-finals).

HANTUCHOVÁ COULD MISS AUSTRALIAN OPEN
World number 17 Daniela Hantuchová could miss the Australian Open due
to illness.

It is thought that the 23-year-old Slovakian may have picked up a
virus, although doctors have yet to diagnose her illness.

Hantuchová's mother, Marianna, revealed: "The health of Daniela is
really not good. She has a high temperature, she is in bad condition
and Australian doctors do not know the reason of her illness.

"We hope and we believe she will play in Melbourne, but her
participation is really not sure right now."

Hantuchová has participated in the Australian Grand Slam tournament
for the last five years, and reached the quarter-final in 2003.

If Daniela does play, she has a nice match against a girl from Nice:
cute 16-year-old Alizé Cornet, ranked #192. She won a couple of $25k
ITF tournaments last year: Bari and Padova, but would not normally be
a player I'd be worried about Daniela having to play.

However, due to the serious doubts over Daniela's health, I'm not
looking any further ahead than this first match.

An Australian heatwave is forecast for tomorrow, with temperatures
over 40şC. Although Daniela is generally one of the fittest players
on the Tour, this could be very tough for Daniela if she's still ill.
It's even conceivable that we could have an on-court death.
