Women's Doubles final (Sunday 11th June)
---------------------
- DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ/AI SUGIYAMA [5] lt.
LISA RAYMOND/SAMANTHA STOSUR [1], 6-3 6-2
The match started at 13:14 CEST on Court Lenglen. BBCi didn't show
it - they wasted both of the Freeview Interactive channels on
football. :-|| So I followed live scores at www.rolandgarros.com.
Here are my comments as I wrote them at the time:
First Set:
HANTUCH/SUGIYA _*___* *_ 3
RAYMOND/STOSUR * *@* * * 6
Raymond/Stosur serving 0-0: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30, held.
Hantuchová serving 0-1: 40/0, 40/30, held.
Raymond/Stosur serving 1-1: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 40/30, held.
Sugiyama serving 1-2: 0/40 (3 BPs), 15/40, broken.
Raymond/Stosur serving 3-1: 15/0, 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad R/S,
held.
And therein lies the difference: the top seeds take their break-
point opportunities while we waste ours! :-(
Hantuchová serving 1-4: 15/15, 40/15, held.
Raymond/Stosur serving 4-2: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30, 40/40,
ad R/S, Deuce #2, ad R/S, held.
Sugiyama serving to stay in the first set at 2-5: 15/0, 15/15,
15/40 (2 SPs) -> 40/40, ad H/S, Deuce #2, ad H/S, held.
Well saved! :-)
Raymond/Stosur serving for the first set at 5-3: 0/15, 15/15, 30/15,
30/30, 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad R/S (SP #3), Raymond/Stosur won the
first set 6-3 at 13:54 (40m).
Second Set:
HANTUCH/SUGIYA * *_____ 2
RAYMOND/STOSUR _* *@*@* 6
Hantuchová (I assume) serving 0-0: 15/0, 15/30, 40/30, 40/40,
ad R/S (BP), Deuce #2, ad H/S, held.
Phew!
Stosur serving 0-1: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30, 40/30, held.
Sugiyama serving 1-1: 15/0, 15/30, 30/30, 40/15 (I'm only recording
what the scoreboard said), held.
Raymond serving 1-2: 15/0, 15/15, 40/15, held.
Hantuchová serving 2-2: 40/0 -> 40/40, ad H/S, Deuce #2, ad H/S,
Deuce #3, ad R/S, broken.
There's no psychological blow like dropping serve from 40/0 up. Five
game-points wasted by us, one break-point needed by them! :-(
Stosur serving 3-2: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30, held.
Sugiyama serving 4-2: 0/40 (3 BPs), 30/40, 40/40, ad R/S (BP #4),
broken.
Raymond serving for the match at 5-2: 40/0 (3 CPs), Raymond/Stosur
won 6-3 6-2 at 14:29 (1h15m), making Raymond the 13th player of the
Open Era to have won all four Women's Doubles Grand Slam titles in
her career.
Quotes (sorry - none from the runners-up)
------
Raymond: "Playing these guys, we've struggled with them in the past,
so for us to go out there and beat them as decisively as we did
feels good. Especially to do it in a Grand Slam final.
"To finally get the French Open, get that monkey off my back, it
feels great. You know, it's funny. The first thing I said to Sam
when we won was, 'Thank you for finally getting me this title.' I
think I have like three or four doubles and two mixed finals here,
trophies, that I don't even want to look at. To finally be able to
win here, to complete the [career] Slam, that's just an unbelievable
feeling."
Stosur: "We played very well. We both served well. It was hard for
them to get a sniff on either of our serves. Lisa did a great job
serving it out.
"It's great. I'm just really excited at the moment. To come back and
get this one, and after the disappointment at the Aussie [where they
squandered three championship-points], we certainly didn't want that
to happen again. So I think to go out there and win, but also to win
so comfortably on the scoreboard, is a great feeling.
"11 from 21 [tournaments won with Raymond], it's awesome. I knew,
going into this match, how much Lisa wanted to win this one, and I'm
just glad that I could be the one that happened to be on the court
with her when she got it. I'm just really - I mean, I'm happy for
us, but I'm also very happy for her to achieve that."
