Second round (Thursday 1st June)
------------

+ DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [15] d. Emmanuelle Gagliardi, 3-6 6-2 6-3

Daniela appeared to have a major problem as she went down 0-4 at the
start of the match, but even by the end of the first set she had
turned the momentum in her favour, and she won a match that featured
more breaks than holds of serve!

The match started at 11:20 CEST on Court 7 - which was not televised
on BBCi, so I followed live scores at www.rolandgarros.com.

First Set:
HANTUCHOV ____*@*__ 3
GAGLIARDI @*@*___*@ 6

Daniela serving 0-0: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.

Not a good start! They started late compared to the other courts,
which made me wonder if one of them had a problem, perhaps of
a 'bathroom' variety (Daniela went on to take a bathroom-break at
*3-2 in the third).

Gagliardi serving 1-0: 0/15, 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad G,
Deuce #2, ad G, held.

Wasted break-points - not a good sign for Daniela!

Daniela serving 0-2: 15/0, 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.
Gagliardi serving 3-0: 30/0, 30/15, 40/15, held.
Daniela serving 0-4: 30/0, 30/15, 40/15, held.

Phew! At 0-4 down, all you're thinking of is avoiding the dreaded
double bagel. :-o

Gagliardi serving 4-1: 15/0, 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.
Daniela serving 4-2: held to love.

At last Daniela has woken up! She's won 8 points in a row, and
suddenly Gagliardi seems as vulnerable to Daniela as she should be
after the year she's had.

Gagliardi serving 4-3: 0/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad G, held.

Daniela now has the momentum, but it might be too little too late
for this set. The good news is that it's best of three, and Daniela
has an excellent record for winning in three this year.

Daniela serving to stay in the first set at 3-5: 15/0, 15/15,
40/15 -> 40/40, ad G (SP), Gagliardi won the first set 6-3 at 11:54.

But Daniela has now handed the momentum back to Gagliardi, and given
her the advantage of serving first in the second. It's imperative
that Daniela gets off to a good start in the second.

Second Set:
HANTUCHOV @ @*@ @* 6
GAGLIARDI _@___@__ 2

Gagliardi serving 0-0: broken to love.
Daniela serving 1-0: 0/40 (3 BPs) -> 40/40, ad D, Deuce #2, ad D,
Deuce #3, ad G (BP #4), Deuce #4, ad D, Deuce #5, ad G (BP #5),
broken.

What a waste of a great recovery in that game. :-(

Gagliardi serving 1-1: 0/30, 15/30, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.
Daniela serving 2-1: 30/0, 30/15, 40/15, held.

A very important hold for Daniela after four breaks in a row.
Holding is the new 'breaking' in this match. :-o

Gagliardi serving 1-3: 30/0 -> 30/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad G, Deuce #2,
ad D (BP), Deuce #3, ad G, Deuce #4, ad G, Deuce #5, ad D (BP #2),
broken.

Very important I feel for Daniela to consolidate her hold. It's not
really a hold until you've broken in the next game. *4-1 sounds like
a big lead, but it's only one hold! ;-)

Daniela serving 4-1: broken to love.
Gagliardi serving 2-4: broken to love.

Games going comfortably against serve now. Very important not to let
Gagliardi get the hold back. I'm sure Daniela would dearly love to
hold for the set rather than have to receive for it at 5-3! ;-)

Daniela serving for the first set at 5-2: held to love. Daniela won
the second set 6-2 at 12:36.

Third Set:
HANTUCHOV _*@ @*@ @ 6
GAGLIARDI *__@___@_ 3

Gagliardi serving 0-0: 0/15, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), 40/40,
ad G, held.

Another wasted break-point from Daniela. She needs to 'hold back'
immediately.

Daniela serving 0-1: held to love.
Gagliardi serving 1-1: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/40 (BP), 40/40,
ad D (BP), broken.
Daniela serving 2-1: 0/30, 15/30, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.

Which will be dominant in this set - the serving or the returning?

Gagliardi serving 2-2: 0/15, 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.

Daniela left the court according to WTAworld.com, presumably for a
bathroom-break.

Daniela serving 3-2: 30/0 -> 30/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad D, held.
Gagliardi serving 2-4: broken to love.
Daniela serving for the match at 5-2: 15/0, 15/15, 15/30, 30/30,
30/40 (BP), broken.
Gagliardi serving to stay in the match at 3-5: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30,
30/30, 30/40 (MP), Daniela won 3-6 6-2 6-3 at 13:20 (exactly two
hours).

Statistics
----------

Daniela had a winner-to-unforced-error ratio of 43:45 (10:17 for the
first set, 33:28 for the second and third combined), Gagliardi 24:38.

Daniela won 6 of 13 points at the net, Gagliardi 7 of 10. This is a
disappointing statistic for Daniela, who I believe is one of the
most talented volleyers in the game.

They both got 66% of first serves in. Daniela won 58% of the points
when she did so, and 37% on second serve (Gagliardi 50% and 20%).
Daniela's first-serve percentages (in and won) both improved from
set to set.

Daniela hit one ace and 3 double faults. Gagliardi hit no aces and 7
double faults.

Daniela broke 9 times from 15 break-points, Gagliardi 7 from 11.
Daniela won the second set by 4 breaks to 2, and again in the third
set.

In points, Daniela won 93-74.

The statistics suggest a higher-quality match than I imagined whilst
following live scores.

Daniela 3r preview
------------------

Nathalie Dechy is a right-handed player with a two-handed backhand.
She doesn't generate a lot of pace herself, but makes good use of
the pace from her opponent, and is an even better athlete than the
player who beat her at Wimbledon 2002: Jelena Dokic.

Dechy has reached the third round with the following results:
1r + Stéphanie Foretz, 6-2 3-6 6-3
2r + Catalina Castańo, 6-4 2-6 6-3

So a second-set lapse is something for Daniela to look out for if
she loses the first.

Daniela has a 3-2 head-to-head over Dechy:
+ 2001 Birmingham 1r: Hantuchová 4-6 6-4 6-3
- 2001 US Open 1r: Dechy 5-7 6-4 6-2
+ 2002 Fed Cup: Hantuchová 7-5 7-5
+ 2003 Antwerp: Hantuchová 7-6 7-6
- 2005 Luxembourg: Dechy 6-1 6-4

Dechy's win/loss record for 2006 is a now-slightly-better-than-
abysmal 6-12 (including her two wins here).

---------------
Women's Doubles
---------------

DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ/AI SUGIYAMA [5]:
1r + Caroline Dhenin/Mathilde Johansson [WC], 6-4 6-3
2r + Sofia Arvidsson/Martina Müller, 6-1 6-1
3r v Marion Bartoli/Shahar Peer

--------------------------
