==========
ROGERS CUP (Toronto, Canada, hard, WTA Tier I)
==========

A sad tournament for us as Daniela retired with heat-illness against
the gorgeous Alina Jidkova. But she recovered to play doubles,
reaching the semi-finals.

It's strange that Daniela retired with heat-illness. She's one of
the fittest girls on the tour (in both senses of the word!), and
usually enjoys playing in hot conditions. Apparently it's only about
25°C in Toronto this week - hot by British standards, but nothing
compared with summer in Australia or Florida, where they have to
play in temperatures up to 45°C.

I think it's more likely that Daniela got sick because she was
playing for the fifth week in a row. I was actually a bit worried
when I saw her in the Toronto draw, so soon after her Los Angeles
final. I hope she isn't repeating her mistake of overplaying in
2002/2003.

So I am alarmed to see Daniela in the New Haven draw (she plays
Nuria Llagostera Vives in the first round), meaning that the first
week of the US Open will be her seventh week in a row, and in
temperatures of up to 35°C!

I was there. From the start of the match I had a feeling something
was wrong. She didn't look too well, kinda upset and as if she
didn't wanna be there. Throughout the match also, she was looking
upset and somewhat sick. She called for a trainer after the 1st set
and said something about a headache, and she put ice on her
shoulder. So from there, I guessed she had heat exhaustion or
something. 2nd set she came back and was playing great, won it...
went into the 3rd set very well.. and even tho she was winning, she
always had that look of hurt and pain. Then at 4-4, she shook her
head and she looked as if she was in real pain. Went to the net and
shook Alina's hand. Then the ump called the security to bring the
golf cart into the court to take Daniela away cause she wasn't able
to walk out the court to it. She had a towel over her head, and
didn't even look up. I caught a glimpse of her face and it was an
expression of pain. It was jus so sad ':-(

+ DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ/AI SUGIYAMA [4] d.
Nuria Llagostera Vives/Flavia Pennetta, 6-3 6-4

It's good to know that Daniela has recovered! It sounded pretty
serious when she had to be wheeled off court in a golf-cart after
retiring from singles in the middle of a game.
