Yesterday I was sitting with a Yugoslav coach watching Kristina
Czafikova play Micha Krajicek. Our girl seemed to be doing OK in the
first set, 3-3, against her taller stonger opponent. Then Micha got
ahead and won the set. Nothing daunted our girl started to
accumulate a lead in the second set. The Yugoslav coach was full of
admiration for Kristina. The Slovak tennis school is very good, he
said. He pointed at Micha, and asked how much money did I think had
been spent on Micha, as compared with his daughter. I had no idea.
He told me that 70,000 DM had been spent on his daughter, whereas
Micha had had a million spent on her. Micha had six or seven men in
her entourage there to support her; these include coaches, sponsors,
etc. I noticed that the several coaches who were there for her the
previous week were not evident, and that othermore senior men were
present. If you can spend a million DM on a 14-year old, think how
much more money is required to keep the Daniela show on the road.

To return to Kristina's match. Our girl won the second set by margin
that shrank towards the end. Then Micha made a bigger effort in the
third, whilst our girl was perhaps a bit tired, so Kristina lost.
Kristina played really well.
