3. Daniela Hantuchová preview
-----------------------------
Daniela's return to the top ten was short-lived, as she drops from
#10 to #12 on the WTA Singles Rankings as of 25th June, despite
reaching the semi-finals of 's-Hertogenbosch with the following
results:
1r + Olga Poutchkova, 6-2 6-1
2r + Meghann Shaughnessy, 3-6 6-3 5-3 retired (left-ankle sprain)
qf + ANA IVANOVIC [2,DF], 6-3 6-1
sf - ANNA CHAKVETADZE [3,EF], 3-6 4-6
Despite increasing her points-total to 1813, Daniela has been
overtaken by Nadia Petrova (#9 with 1862) and Nicole Vaidiová (#10
with 1819) after their exploits at Eastbourne.
But I would certainly have signed for a year in which Daniela won her
first WTA singles-title since 2002, and returned to the top ten for
the first time since 2003!
Daniela's draw to the fourth round bears a striking resemblance to
her Wimbledon 2006 draw, but there she is projected to meet Serena
Williams, who is many people's idea of co-favourite for the title
along with Justine Henin, whom the winner of Daniela v Serena would
meet in the quarter-finals.
3.1 First round
---------------
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will not be 16 until 3rd July, but she is #1
on the ITF Junior Girls' Singles Rankings; she has won the Girls'
Singles titles at the Australian Open 2006 and 2007, and US Open 2006.
She's not so good on grass, though - nothing to indicate that Daniela
won't give her a good lesson in their first head-to-head meeting!
I actually saw Pavlyuchenkova play Nicole Vaidiová at Moscow 2006:
she's a good little player: a competitive counterpuncher with deep
groundstrokes, who takes the ball early. But her serve was vastly
inferior to Nicole's, who just overpowered her in general.
This will be Pavlyuchenkova's first main-draw appearance in a Grand
Slam Women's Singles, having fallen in the third round of qualifying
for the Australian Open 2007. Since then, her adult activity has been
restricted to four ITF tournaments, with very modest results.
Daniela should be disappointed if she drops more than four games to
the 15-year-old.
3.2 Second round
----------------
I hope for a repeat of Daniela's 1r Wimbledon 2006 match against
beautiful Maria Elena Camerin, although a match against Elena
Likhovtseva would also be nice - provided that they both played a lot
better than they did in 1r Eastbourne 2006!
Likhovseva won that one 6-4 7-6 against a rusty Daniela who had
pulled out of Birmingham that year with a wrist-injury, but Daniela
won their other two meetings: 2001 Fed Cup (6-1 6-3) and 2005 Dubai
2r (7-5 6-4).
Likhovtseva was going to retire at the end of 2006, and has done more
losing than winning this year (13:14), but she's just coming off a
run to the quarter-finals of Birmingham (where she lost to Maria
Sharapova) and a successful qualification for Eastbourne (then she
lost to Shahar Pe'er). Daniela should be too good for her - it would
take a very disappointing performance, as at Eastbourne 2006, to lose
to Elena.
Daniela thrashed Camerin 6-2 6-1 at Sydney 2002, but made a meal of
beating the journeywoman in 1r Wimbledon 2006 (6-4 4-6 6-1).
Camerin is currently on a 4-match losing-streak, and since
Likhovtseva thrashed her 6-0 6-1 in their last meeting, it's not too
likely that Daniela will be meeting Camerin in the second round.
3.3 Third round
---------------
Daniela beat Katarina Srebotnik in 3r Wimbledon 2006, and a rematch
looks likely as I don't think much of the other three players in
Srebotnik's sector.
Srebotnik is a fluid player with spider-like court-craft, but Daniela
owns her 5:0:
+ 2002 Leipzig 1r: 4-6 6-3 6-3
+ 2003 Indian Wells 3r: Daniela 7-6 6-2
+ 2003 San Diego 2r: Daniela 3-6 7-5 7-6 (8/6)
+ 2006 Berlin 2r: Daniela 6-4 0-6 6-1
+ 2006 Wimbledon 3r: Daniela 6-4 7-6
Srebotnik is having a respectable year with a win/loss record of
15:14: she beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-2 retired to reach the quarter-
finals of Sydney; other highlights include reaching the third round
of the Australian and French Opens, and quarter-finals of Charleston.
But losing 6-3 6-2 to Tatjana Malek in 1r 's-Hertogenbosch wasn't an
encouraging sign ahead of Wimbledon.
3.4 Fourth round
----------------
Daniela is projected to meet two-time champion Serena Williams in the
fourth round, so this is as far as I'm looking ahead at this stage.
Daniela knocked Serena out of the Australian Open 2006 - when Serena
was defending champion - 6-1 7-6 in the third round, but Serena leads
their head-to-head 5:1.
Everyone was writing off Serena at the Australian Open 2007, but in
one of the most unbelievable comebacks in tennis-history, she won the
title with a ranking of #81, beating red-hot favourite Maria
Sharapova in the final. Serena also won Miami, beating Justine Henin
in the final.
Serena's claycourt-season was less impressive, culminating in a
6-4 6-3 loss to Henin in the quarter-finals of the French Open. It
remains to be seen whether she has lost her form, or if it was just a
bad run on her worst surface.
