(Transworld Sport may be televised in other countries, but the
details in this message are specific to the UK.)
There are two points from the Indian Wells final between Daniela
Hantuchová and Svetlana Kuznetsova in this week's Transworld Sport,
which is repeated with sign-language at 03:30 BST on {Friday night/
Saturday morning} on Channel 4.
The tennis was 12 minutes into Sunday's broadcast of Transworld Sport
(before the first adverts), so I recommend 03:41 as a safe start-time
for timer-record, and 03:50 as a safe stop-time (Transworld Sport has
been known to start up to 5 minutes late).
The points they showed:
* Daniela serving 6-3 1-2 (30/30): A chess-like rally started with a
big serve down the middle, forcing a short backhand lob-return;
Daniela hit a deep crosscourt forehand drive-volley, and although she
hesitated to come in behind it and got caught behind the service-
line, her long limbs enabled her to maintain the initiative with a
crosscourt backhand drop-volley; Kuznetsova ran it down and hit a
searing crosscourt backhand, but luckily Daniela was still covering
the left half of the court; she had to backstep and hit a backhand
half-volley down the line, but the court was completely open for it
to be a winner. There was a nice little smile on Daniela's face after
that.
Sue Carpenter said all the obvious things we already know about
Daniela's two WTA singles-titles, plus: "She's in inspired form as
she dismantles Russian world #4 Svetlana Kuznetsova."
* Daniela serving 6-3 5-4 (40/15): Daniela hit a good serve out wide,
on the service-line; Kuznetsova a short forehand return down the
middle; Daniela a short crosscourt backhand; Kuznetsova crosscourt
backhand; Daniela backhand down the line; Kuznetsova a short forehand
down the line; Daniela a rolling crosscourt backhand just inside the
sideline; Kuznetsova a short crosscourt backhand, and Daniela hit a
body-jamming crosscourt backhand, inducing Kuznetsova to hit a
forehand long on the tenth stroke of the rally. As soon as that ball
landed out, Daniela - who was shaping up to hit a forehand - raised
her arms and jumped for joy.
Sue Carpenter: "Hantuchová ends her run of four finals without a win
with a straight-sets victory, and joins the likes of Martina
Navrátilová and Steffi Graf as players who've won the tournament
twice."
Finally, they showed Daniela holding the 'whale' and smiling - which
is more than Eurosport showed of the presentation-ceremony! :-||
