Daniela Hantuchová preview
--------------------------
Daniela's draw is extremely tough, as she has not only the in-form
Ana Ivanovic in her third-round draw, but two-time US Open champion
Serena Williams in the second round!
1r: Daniela has never played Bethanie Mattek, who is ranked #108. I
don't have much respect for players who are awarded main-draw wild
cards because of their nationality, so Daniela should give the young
American a right royal thrashing.
Mattek has hardly beaten anyone of note in her career, her most
impressive scalp being #18 Flavia Pennetta at Los Angeles 2006,
where she then thrashed Alyona Bondarenko 6-1 6-1 to reach the
quarter-finals. But she withdrew from New Haven with a left-knee
injury, after winning one match in qualifying.
2r: Daniela beat Serena Williams 6-1 7-6 in the third round of the
Australian Open - her only win in five matches against Williams. But
Williams looked grossly overweight in January, and in recent photos
she looks much fitter. Williams beat Daniela 1-6 6-3 6-3 at Los
Angeles, and the media are writing about this match as though it
would be an upset for Daniela to win it, even though she's the
seeded player.
Williams was out for six months with a left-kee injury after the
Australian Open, and has since played two tournaments. At Cincinnati
she thrashed Anastasia Myskina 6-2 6-2 in the first round, and went
on to reach the semi-finals where she was beaten 6-2 6-3 by my red-
hot Vera Zvonarëva. :-) And Los Angeles was a similar story, as
Williams began with an ominous 6-2 6-1 drubbing of Maria Kirilenko,
but fell in the semis again, this time to a resurgent Jelena
Jankovic.
So Daniela shouldn't be too terrified of Williams on this kind of
form, but she'll certainly have to buck up her ideas, because she's
put in too many disappointing performances since the Australian Open.
3r: It's difficult to envisage anyone but Ana Ivanovic as Daniela's
potential opponent in this match. Daniela has never played Ana, but
there's certainly plenty for her to worry about with the way Ana
swept through the field at Montréal, thrashing Hingis worse than
Daniela did in the Indian Wells 2002 final to claim her first Tier I
title.
But Ana can sometimes look like a very ordinary player, as indeed
she has in the only three matches I've ever seen her play. Winning
Montréal has made Ana feel that she belongs with the top players,
but now she has to show that she can maintain that level week in,
week out, as many such promising players have failed to do in the
past - including Daniela after Indian Wells 2002, it has to be said.
4r: And if her second- and third-round draws aren't bad enough,
Daniela would then almost certainly run into Amélie Mauresmo. But
given Daniela's terrible records against the likes of Clijsters,
Davenport and the Williams sisters, it's refreshing to see that her
head-to-head against Mauresmo is as good as 2-2 - Daniela's wins
coming in Fed Cup 2002 and sf Eastbourne 2004.
Mauresmo hadn't played since Wimbledon due to a right-shoulder
strain - until New Haven, where she had an unconvincing 4-6 6-1 6-2
win over Galina Voskoboeva, and a 6-4 7-5 loss to Lindsay Davenport -
but then she always has a bad tournament just before winning a
Grand Slam.
qf: We're getting outside the realm of probability here, so I'll
hold off my quarter-final analysis until Daniela has cleared her
three very difficult hurdles. I do think she has a fighting chance
of winning each of rounds 2-4 individually, but multiply the
probabilities together and you get a very small probability of her
reaching the quarter-finals.
