Last game of Indian Wells 2002:

The Sony Ericsson advert with Daniela and Ana Ivanovic is now doing
the rounds on UK television: I saw it on ITV1 last Saturday
afternoon. You can also watch it online at

-----------
First round (Tuesday 15th August)
-----------
+ DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [11] d. Gisela Dulko, 6-2 6-0
Poor Gisela. She's adorable. It's only right that Daniela should
have won, though, since I am an eternal fan of Daniela and only a
demi-fan of Gisela.
Gisela had won their only previous meeting 6-4 6-4 [Berlin 2005],
but this year she's lost more matches than she's won (16-18, Daniela
26-18).
------------
Second round (Wednesday 16th August)
------------
+ DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [11] d. Jamea Jackson [Q], 7-6 (9/7) 6-2
Jackson is a powerful and athletic player, like a miniature Serena
Williams. She can be an extremely dangerous opponent, as the Super
Maria Sisters would tell you! In the Birmingham final, Vera
Zvonarëva took the first set off her 7-6 (14/12), then things went
downhill quickly for Jackson (although she did fight back from 0-4
to force another tiebreak).
When I saw Daniela play on TV at the French Open (3r) and Wimbledon
(1r, 2r), she made her matches much more complicated than she should
have done, by having a second-set 'walkabout' - and one of these
matches was against Jackson. But here, she obviously did things much
more straightforwardly.

Third round (Thursday 17th August)
-----------
- DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [11] lt. MARTINA HINGIS [7], 5-7 4-6
Daniela won her first-ever meeting with Hingis 6-3 6-4 [Indian Wells
2002 final], but this is the second 7-5 6-4 defeat she's suffered at
the hands of Hingis since then.
Hingis broke for *4-3 in the first set, but Daniela won the next two
games and had three set-points with Hingis serving at 4-5 (0/40)!
Daniela is an expert at squandering break-points. She also led *5-5
(40/0) according to some reports - others (including Daniela
herself) say she wasted only two game-points at 5-5. Hingis, serving
for the first set at 6-5, needed four set-points.
After losing seven games in a row, Daniela trailed 0-4 and 1-5, but
at least managed to add a modicum of respectability to the second-
set scoreline before the inevitable happened - in fact not so
inevitable, because Hingis admitted she could have lost the match,
and she did lose the Australian Open 2002 final to Jennifer Capriati
from 6-4 4-0 up!
www.wtatour.com: "No.7 seed Hingis trailed 5-4, 0-40 in the first
set of her 75 64 win but her Slovakian opponent, No.11 Daniela
Hantuchová, gave away four straight points on forehand errors. The
23-year-old hit the first forehand in the net after a long rally and
then missed three consecutive returns to let Hingis back in the
match. Hingis raced to a 5-1 lead in the second set before
Hantuchová reeled off three straight games."

This was a match for the ages. Former World No. 1 Martina Hingis
sitting back from the baseline, gently moving the ball around the
court and waiting for her opponent to swing wild and make an error.
Unfortunately, Daniela Hantuchová made plenty of those errors last
night in crashing to a straight sets defeat.
The strategy mostly worked for Hingis as the Swiss Miss moved
confidently into the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup last night. Her
7-5, 6-4 victory over Hantuchová was painful viewing for fans of the
Slovak, as all too often she was lulled into aggressive shots that
missed their mark.
The match ran for an hour and 35 minutes. Hantuchová had her moments
and the match was mostly about her rather than the brilliance of
Hingis. Many of the points were won and lost from Hantuchová's
racquet, winners and erratic mistakes, Hingis simply relied on her
usual consistency to prevail. It was painfully predictable.

Daniela quotes
--------------
[Re. missing three set-points]
"I think it only took me like seven days to get over it. Basically
after that I just stopped playing. It was not only that game but the
next game, I again had two game-points. So instead of being up
6-4 1-0, I was down 5-6. So it was pretty frustrating. And it just
took me way too long to be able to forget it and move on.
"And in the second set, it was too late when I started to come back
again."
Hingis quotes
-------------
"Every point counted, that's all you can say. One point here, one
point there, that made all the difference. She served amazingly
today, so it was hard to get some rhythm."
[first set]
"I would have been really disappointed if I blew three set-points.
I'd have needed several games to regroup."
[second set]
"I could have lost the match. A few years ago, I wouldn't have let a
match like this escape me – that's the difference."
