BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC
(Stanford, California, USA; outdoor hard; WTA Tier II)
======================== http://www.bankofthewestclassic.com/

She's a lover, baby and a fighter
Shoulda seen her coming when it got a little brighter
With a name like Dani California
Day was gonna come when I was gonna mourn her
A little loaded, she was stealin' another breath
I love my baby to death

[Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Dani California"]

At least Daniela looked better than she played! ;-)

-----------
First round (Tuesday 25th July)
-----------

- DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [5] lt. Shenay Perry [Q], 2-6 6-0 3-6

A disappointing loss, but sometimes being a qualifier can be an
advantage. Perry had three wins coming into the main draw, making
her used to the conditions at Stanford, whereas Daniela was playing
her first singles-match since withdrawing from Cincinnati with a
foot-injury.

Daniela quotes
--------------

{before the match}
"I think it's a very tough draw. It shows again how popular this
tournament is. Hopefully, I'll get as far as possible. Everyone's
going to be very tough.

"[Playing the US Open Series] is a great thing. [Last year] I really
enjoyed it. I played in quite a few of the summer tournaments, like
five or six. It really gave me the confidence coming into the US
Open."

{after the match}
"I saw her at Wimbledon, so I knew it would be a tough match. But it
was more about me making way too many mistakes, and not playing well
at all. I know I have a lot of work to do.

"This is the first tournament of the summer, so I was not really
expecting too much of me. I wouldn't really give too much to this
match. It was about getting used to the conditions, and finding my
way around the hard courts. But I have a lot of work to do before
the next tournament, that's for sure."

Perry quotes
------------

"I feel great about the win. To beat someone who is top-20, who has
been top-10 before, and still has potential to get back to the top-
10, is great. But I didn't feel that much pressure out there.

"Coming here to qualify was a good thing. Playing in the heat helped
me test my stamina. Getting three matches under my belt might have
helped me win tonight."

Women's Doubles: First round
----------------------------

Jelena Jankovic/Shikha Uberoi, 3-6 4-6

California, rest in peace
Simultaneous release
California, show your teeth
She's my priestess, I'm your priest
