Second round
------------
+ DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [15] d. Jamea Jackson, 6-3 4-6 7-5
It's a big relief for Daniela to come through this one after Jamea
Jackson upset Maria Sharapova at Birmingham! But Jackson didn't play
anywhere near that level here - she was surprisingly passive, just
waiting for Daniela's errors. And Daniela did almost beat herself,
with a W:UE ratio of 33:47 (Jackson 8:22).
Daniela showed flashes of brilliance throughout the match, but just
looked so unconfident, and benefited from some cheap errors from
Jackson at the end of the sets that she won.
First Set:
HANTUCH * *@*@__* 6
JACKSON _*____@*_ 3
The match started at 13:38 BST on Court 2, and I saw it all on BBCi.
Daniela serving 0-0: Jackson netted a backhand return. 15/0. Daniela
netted a backhand - she can't afford cheap errors like that against
Jackson, or suffer Maria Sharapova's fate she will. 15/15. Jackson
netted a backhand. 30/15. Daniela hit a beautiful backhand drop-
volley winner - set up by a good wide serve. 40/15. Daniela netted a
simple forehand. 40/30. Service-winner.
Jackson serving 0-1: Daniela forehand return wide. 0/15. Daniela hit
a fantastic running forehand winner down the line (opened the court
with a crosscourt forehand). 15/15. Jackson forehand wide. 15/30.
Daniela wild forehand return very long. 30/30. Jackson netted a
forehand. 30/40 (BP). Jackson saved it with a forehand volley-
winner, after her athleticism overcame a dropshot from Daniela.
40/40. Jackson forehand just long - overruled as good by the umpire,
who ordered the point to replayed. Daniela argued with the
umpire: "It was this far out." Daniela forehand just wide. Ad
Jackson. Ace down the middle.
Daniela has to start converting her break-points if she's going to
have any chance of beating Jackson.
Daniela serving 1-1: Jackson forehand long. 15/0. Jackson sprayed a
mishit forehand wide. 30/0. Double fault. 30/15. Daniela netted a
backhand off an awkward low, wide ball. 30/30. Virtual ace out wide.
40/30. Daniela hit a pinpoint forehand winner down the line.
Jackson serving 1-2: Jackson netted a backhand. 0/15. Jackson
backhand wide. 0/30. Daniela backhand wide. 15/30. Daniela forehand
return wide by a whisker - could have been 15/40, but instead 30/30.
Jackson backhand wide. 30/40 (BP). Daniela netted a simple forehand
down the line, but it's never simple with Daniela! 40/40. Daniela
forehand wide. Ad Jackson. Double fault. Deuce #2. Double fault. Ad
Daniela (BP #2). Jackson forehand long.
It's very important for Daniela not to get complacent on any kind of
lead in this match, because Jackson is capable of much better tennis
than she's produced so far today, and Vera Zvonareva led 7-6 4-0 in
the Birmingham final and only won 7-6 7-6. Daniela needs to make hay
while the sun shines.
Daniela serving 3-1: Jackson netted a forehand. 15/0. Service-
winner. 30/0. Daniela hit a blistering pinpoint backhand winner down
the line. 40/0. Daniela hit a fabulous error-forcing crosscourt
forehand, right into Jackson's forehand-corner.
Jackson serving 1-4: Daniela backhand winner behind Jackson, who
slipped over. 0/15. Daniela netted a forehand. 15/15. Daniela
forehand just long. 15/30. Jackson forehand just wide. 30/30.
Daniela netted a backhand dropshot off a get from Jackson that
landed short and wide. 40/30. Daniela hit a blistering, error-
forcing off-forehand return. 40/40. Jackson netted a backhand and
groaned. Ad Daniela (BP). Daniela hit a deep forehand return,
forcing Jackson to net a forehand.
This is fabulous form from Daniela at the moment - I haven't seen
her this confident since her good performance against Maria
Sharapova in 4r Australian Open, if not years ago.
Daniela serving for the first set at 5-1: Serve + crosscourt
backhand winner. 15/0. Daniela wild forehand very long. 15/15.
Daniela forehand long. 15/30. Daniela argued the call on her first
serve (would have been an ace out wide), then netted a forehand.
15/40 (2 BPs). Jackson, driven wide, netted a forehand. 30/40.
Daniela hit a forehand winner down the line, just inside the
sideline, and said "c'mon". 40/40. Daniela wild backhand long &
wide. Ad Jackson (BP #3). Daniela wild backhand *very* long.
I am the kiss of death! Confidence is a very fragile thing for
Daniela. I sense a slight increase in Jackson's form, but not to the
stage where she's hitting winners all over the court yet!
Jackson serving to stay in the first set at 2-5: Daniela netted a
forehand return. 15/0. Daniela long. 30/0. Daniela hit a blazing
backhand winner down the line as Jackson slipped over again. 40/0.
Daniela off-forehand return-winner (serve was right in her hitting-
zone). 30/30. Daniela mishit backhand return wide. 40/30. Daniela
netted a wild forehand, and I fear for this set now.
Daniela serving for the first set at 5-3: Daniela hit a lovely short-
angled yet powerful crosscourt forehand winner. 15/0. Double fault.
15/15. Daniela forehand long (forced by a deep, powerful return).
15/30. Jackson wild forehand return very long. 30/30. Double fault.
30/40 (BP). Jackson forehand just wide. 40/40. Jackson netted a
forehand return. Ad Daniela (SP #1). Daniela squandered it with a
backhand wide. Deuce #2. Jackson netted a simple backhand. Ad
Daniela (SP #2). Jackson netted a forehand return to give Daniela
the first set 6-3 at 14:20.
I'm very relieved and grateful for Jackson's cheap errors in that
game, because that set was shaping up to be a big choke for Daniela.
This is nothing like Jackson's performance which beat Maria
Sharapova at Birmingham... so far.
Second Set:
HANTUCH _* * * *__ 4
JACKSON * * * * *@ 6
Jackson serving 0-0: Daniela wild forehand long. 15/0. Daniela hit
an error-forcing backhand down the line. 15/15. Daniela hit a
forehand return-winner down the line, like an arrow straight and
true to Jackson's backhand-corner. 30/15. Daniela backhand very
long, and again she argued about a call - "this one you can't see?".
30/30. Jackson sprayed a forehand wide, and yelled "aaah!" 30/40
(BP). Daniela netted a backhand. 40/40. Daniela forehand very long
off an easy-looking short ball. Ad Jackson. She held with a pinpoint
backhand winner down the line.
Daniela serving 0-1: Jackson sliced backhand wide. 15/0. Service-
winner. 30/0. Daniela netted a forehand. 30/15. Jackson backhand
very long. 40/15. Daniela backhand just long. 40/30. Daniela
forehand just wide. 40/40. Jackson slipped and hit a backhand wide.
Ad Daniela. She held with a forehand winner down Jackson's forehand-
sideline.
Jackson serving 1-1: Daniela forehand wide. 15/0. Double fault.
15/15. Daniela netted a forehand. 30/15. Daniela forehand return
wide. 40/15. Daniela backhand wide.
Liz Smylie said it was a "really sloppy game" from Daniela - that
she should put her foot down and win this match as Jackson isn't
coming in or hurting her in this match so far. I say Daniela just
lacks that ability to go for the jugular which separates great
champions from talented players.
Daniela serving 1-2: Ace down the middle. 15/0. Daniela error-
forcing forehand. 30/0. Jackson backhand just long. 40/0. Jackson
backhand wide.
Jackson serving 2-2: Daniela crosscourt forehand winner. 0/15.
Daniela netted a backhand. 15/15. Daniela backhand just long. 30/15.
Daniela forehand wide. 40/15. Daniela netted a forehand return to
give Jackson another cheap service-game. Barry Davies basically said
Daniela was lazy, but Liz Smylie said it was lack of confidence.
Daniela serving 2-3: Daniela forehand just long. 0/15. Daniela
crosscourt forehand winner. 15/15. Ace down the middle. 30/15.
Daniela forehand long. 30/30. Jackson netted a forehand return.
40/30. Service-winner.
Neither player is really finding form in this set. Who can put her
foot down and accelerate to victory?
Jackson serving 3-3: Daniela forehand long. 15/0. Daniela netted a
forehand. 30/0. Daniela forehand just wide. 40/0. Jackson netted a
forehand off an awkward forehand return down the line from Daniela.
40/15. Jackson forehand just long. 40/30. Daniela netted a forehand.
Just not applying the pressure that would break Jackson, who is far
from her terrifying best.
Daniela serving 3-4 (new balls): Service-winner. 15/0. Daniela
crosscourt forehand winner. 30/0. Daniela forced Jackson to hit a
backhand wide. 40/0. Double fault. 40/15. Jackson backhand wide.
Jackson serving 4-4: Daniela netted a backhand return. 15/0. Daniela
forehand long. 30/0. Daniela came to the net, forcing Jackson to hit
a backhand wide. 30/15. Daniela forehand long. 40/15. Jackson
forehand long. 40/30. And again. 40/40. Jackson hit a backhand just
wide (forced by a good deep shot from Daniela - but so cautious). Ad
Daniela (BP). Daniela wild forehand return very long and wide. Deuce
#2. Daniela netted a forehand return. Ad Jackson. Jackson forehand
wide. Deuce #3. Daniela netted a backhand. Ad Jackson. She netted a
forehand, forced by a well-placed forehand from Daniela. Deuce #4.
Jackson came to the net and forced Daniela to hit a backhand lob
long. Ad Jackson. Daniela netted a backhand after a long baseline
rally.
It's difficult to serve after a long game with a missed break-
point...
Daniela serving to stay in the second set at 4-5: Daniela forehand
long. 0/15. Daniela backhand just long and just wide. 0/30. Daniela
hit a pinpoint forehand winner down the line. 15/30. Jackson netted
a backhand. 30/30. Jackson hit a blistering crosscourt forehand
return virtual winner. 30/40 (SP). She saved it with an ace out
wide. 40/40. Daniela netted a forehand. Ad Jackson (SP #2). Daniela
netted a forehand at the end of a long baseline-rally to lose the
second set 4-6 at 15:06.
A very disappointing set from Daniela - Jackson did nothing special
until 4-5 (30/30), and Daniela beat herself with a W:UE of 10:22.
Perhaps Daniela should come to the net more, for I don't imagine
Jackson has the form to come up with a ton of passing-shots today.
(Liz Smylie suggested this herself at 1-2 in the third.)
Third Set:
HANTUCH @__* * * *@* 7

forcing Jackson to net a forehand. 15/15. Daniela backhand wide.
15/30. Daniela hit a scorching crosscourt forehand winner. 30/30.
Daniela backhand just wide. "She's just oozing lack of confidence"
[Liz Smylie]. 30/40 (BP). Daniela saved it with a crosscourt
backhand winner, just inside the sideline. 40/40. Service-winner. Ad
Daniela. Jackson netted a forehand. A big escape for Daniela!
Jackson serving 2-2: Daniela netted a forehand off an easy short
ball from which she could have hit a winner either way. 15/0.
Daniela backhand wide. 30/0. Daniela netted a backhand dropshot.
40/0. Daniela backhand long.
Barry Davies: "She's playing two people: she has to beat herself
before she can beat her opponent."
Daniela serving 2-3: Ace out wide. 15/0. Daniela backhand long.
15/15. Daniela crosscourt backhand winner. 30/15. Jackson forehand
just long. 40/15. Jackson backhand winner down the line. 40/30.

Jackson serving 3-3: Daniela hit a poor forehand lob long. 15/0.
Daniela hit an error-forcing off-forehand. 15/15. Service-winner
down the middle, right on the 'T'. 30/15. Daniela crosscourt
forehand winner. 30/30. Daniela backhand floated wide. 40/30.
Daniela forehand very long.
It's not a good sign when Daniela is constantly looking at her
mother and coach [Angel Jiménez from the Casal/Sánchez academy], or
the umpire, for confirmation of line-calls.
This is where the disadvantage of serving second in the third set
comes into play: you're always under pressure late in the set. Who's
going to muster the courage to win?
Daniela serving 3-4: Daniela netted a backhand. 0/15. Daniela
crosscourt forehand winner. 15/15. Jackson forehand return long.
30/15. Daniela netted a backhand. 30/30. Daniela hit a nice backhand
volley-winner. 40/30. Jackson netted a forehand return.
Now Daniela really needs to pile on the pressure before she's
serving to stay in the match.
Jackson serving 4-4: Serve + crosscourt backhand winner. 15/0.
Daniela backhand return wide. 30/0. Daniela off-forehand just wide.
40/0. Daniela hit a horrible backhand return wide of the tramlines.
Barry Davies said "there's not so much in her game that can go
wrong" in Jackson's game compared to Daniela's.

backhand wide. 15/15. Double fault. 15/30. Jackson sprayed a
backhand long and squealed. 15/40 (2 BPs). An off-backhand return
forced Jackson to net a forehand; Daniela shouted "c'mon" and pumped
her fist.
Liz Smylie: "She looks calm on the outside, but inside it's a war."
Daniela serving for the match at 6-5: Daniela hit a backhand volley-
winner into the open court after Jackson retrieved her forehand
volley. 15/0. Daniela hit a deep, error-forcing forehand, and that
was the moment I believed in her victory. 30/0. Jackson forehand
very long. 40/0 (3 MPs). Jackson netted a forehand return. Daniela
won 6-3 4-6 7-5 at 15:53.

Daniela leads her head-to-head against Katarina 4-0, but three of
their matches have gone to three sets, and Daniela's confidence
seems so low at the moment.
Katarina has a 15-12 win/loss record for 2006 going into this round.
Like Daniela, she's had a lot of trouble stringing two wins together
this year. She got to the third round by beating Martina Suchá
6-4 6-1 and Alicia Molik 6-2 6-1, but should find Daniela a much
tougher opponent.
