+ DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [15] v Maria Elena Camerin, 4-3*
First Set:
HANTUCH _@*@__* 4
CAMERIN @___@*_ 3
The match started at 13:18 BST after a rain-delay, but I was
watching Vera Zvonarëva's match against Kim Clijsters which had
started ten minutes earlier, so I had to settle for following live
scores on a game-by-game basis while I recorded it on my other video-
recorder.
This is a match between two very beautiful girls, but the quality of
the tennis has been much lower than Zvonarëva v Clijsters so far.
Maria Elena hasn't really shown any of the talent I saw at Wimbledon
2005, while Daniela has produced a few gems, but is stuttering
against a player she should really be wiping off the court.
Daniela serving 0-0: She served an ace followed by a double fault,
then Camerin ran down a dropshot to hit a crosscourt forehand winner
to get break-point at 30/40. Daniela netted a backhand to concede
her serve.
Camerin serving 1-0: At 30/15, Daniela hit an off-forehand return-
winner. 30/30. Daniela backhand winner down the line. 30/40 (break-
point). Camerin double-faulted, and struck the court with her racket.
Daniela serving 1-1: Daniela hit a forehand drive-volley winner, and
held to 30.
Camerin serving 1-2: She was broken in an unremarkable game of
errors.
Daniela serving 3-1: Daniela hit a stunning crosscourt forehand
drive-volley winner on the first point, but netted a forehand. A
service-winner made it 30/15, but Daniela netted a forehand and a
backhand to give Camerin break-point at 30/40. She saved it with a
service-winner (Maria Elena howled "out!"), but a forehand wide gave
Camerin a second break-point, and a return at Daniela's feet forced
her to hit a half-volley forehand wide. The commentator said she
wasn't "really committed to the serve and volley".
Camerin serving 2-3: Daniela hit a forehand return-winner en route
to 0/30, and a dropshot/forehand-volley-winner combination gave her
two break-points at 15/40. But Daniela wasted them (as is her wont)
by netting a backhand and mishitting a forehand long. 40/40. Daniela
netted an attempted dropshot off a low ball, and looked at her coach
like she expected him to solve her problems for her, which is never
a good sign for Daniela-fans. Ad Camerin. She forced Daniela into
error by hitting a crosscourt forehand pass at her feet.
Daniela serving 3-3: Daniela tried to serve and volley at 40/0 up,
but the return was too low and she netted it. But she hit a service-
winner to go up 4-3.
Camerin serving 3-4: Play was suspended for rain at 13:43.
Daniela should get through this one without too many problems
tomorrow, as she's in the lead despite playing at only 50% of her
best. But I fear she's going to get slaughtered by Jamea Jackson in
the second round (assuming Jackson overcomes an early deficit
against Kirsten Flipkens tomorrow).
