Wimbledon: Andrew's analysis of the draw

I've been working on my Eastbourne report, but it's most unlikely it
will be ready to post before play starts at Wimbledon. I therefore
expect to finish it on the middle Sunday of Wimbledon, or possibly
after Wimbledon.

Daniela Hantuchová preview
--------------------------

1r: Maria Elena Camerin is a beautiful girl who can clout the ball
pretty well and play nice spreading rallies. On Daniela's average
form, Camerin wouldn't be a problem - Daniela thrashed her 6-2 6-1
in qualifying for Sydney 2002. But Maria Elena has come so far since
then, and Daniela (who pulled out of Birmingham with a wrist-injury)
turned in a dreadful performance in losing to Elena Likhovtseva at
Eastbourne last week (I was there). And Maria Elena beat Daniela 6-4
6-2 in the final of the NEC World Youth Cup 1998, frustrating her
with "brilliant retrieving". I'm looking forward to a very tough
match, which I hope to see on BBCi tomorrow!

2r: Jamea Jackson is a powerful and athletic player, much like
Serena Williams. She beat Maria Sharapova 6-4 6-4 at Birmingham by
playing to the best of her own abilities whilst benefiting from a
forehand which Maria netted with alarming regularity. Daniela will
have to play much better than at Eastbourne if she's going to beat
Jackson, as Vera Zvonarëva did in the Birmingham final. Only a high-
quality performance would do the job against Jackson's Birmingham
form!

I would much prefer a second round against the cute Kirsten
Flipkens, who won the Girls' Singles title at Wimbledon 2003.

3r: Katarina Srebotnik is a decent player on grass, having won
Wimbledon 1998 Girls' Singles - a very fluid player with spider-like
court-craft. Daniela leads their head-to-head 4-0.

I would prefer the delectable Martina Suchá to win through to an all-
Slovak encounter, but she's not strong enough to beat Srebotnik
based on what I saw of them both at Eastbourne - but Srebotnik did
retire with a thumb-injury after a nasty fall; I hope she's okay for
Wimbledon.

Alicia Molik has been a very tough player in recent years,
especially for Daniela (their head-to-head is 3-3, excluding a
bizarre Hopman Cup 2004 rubber where Alicia retired with a foot-
injury whilst leading 6-3 3-0). But Alicia only came back in May
from an inner-ear infection that sidelined her for a year, and
withdrew from Birmingham with neck-stiffness.

4r: I can't really look beyond a match with French Open and
Eastbourne champion Justine Henin-Hardenne. Daniela is 2-2 head-to-
head with Henin, but all four matches were in 2002 (Daniela's wins
coming at Indian Wells and the US Open), before Henin became the
dominant force in women's tennis that she is today. Daniela will
have to find form fast if she's going to do any damage here!

I would love a match with Anna Chakvetadze at this stage, but the
best I can realistically hope for the ultracute Anna is that she
reaches a third round against Henin and gets televised, because the
only time I've seen Anna on TV was at the French Open 2005. I
watched Anna at Birmingham and Eastbourne play two absolutely
mouthwatering matches against Vera Zvonarëva, and although Anna lost
both matches, she impressed me greatly with her newfound flairsome
power! :-)

Bottom quarter
--------------

* SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA [5] v Romina Oprandi [Q]
* Kveta Peschke v Kristina Brandi
* Meilen Tu [Q] v Vassilissa Bardina [Q]
* Virginie Razzano v LI,NA [27]

* MARION BARTOLI [24] v Camille Pin (allez Marion!)
* Karolina Šprem v Anne Keothavong [WC] (ajmo Karolina!)
* Ivana Lisjak v Katerina Bondarenko
* NICOLE VAIDIŠOVÁ [10] v Klára Koukalová (both nice; my loyalty is
to NICOLE!)

* Tzvetana Pironkova v ANNA-LENA GRÖNEFELD [13] (aide Tzvetana!)
* Agnieszka Radwanska [WC] v Viktoria Azarenka
* Catalina Castańo v Tamarine Tanasugarn [Q]
* MARIA KIRILENKO [17] v Asagoe,Shinobu (davai Maria!)

* SOFIA ARVIDSSON [28] v Eva Birnerová
* Iveta Benešová v Zheng,Jie (podme Iveta!)
* Viktoria Kutuzova v Lilia Osterloh (davai Viktoria!)
* Vera Zvonarëva v KIM CLIJSTERS [2] (DAVAI VERA!!)
