Daniela preview
---------------

1r: Lourdes Domínguez Lino is a diminutive claycourt-specialist who
was banned for three months after testing positive for cocaine in
2002. Daniela has never played her before, as the 25-year-old was
ranked outside the top 100 until last year (she is currently #44).

Domínguez Lino won the Tier III at Bogotá in February (beating
beautiful Flavia Pennetta in the final), but a quick look through
her match-results reveals that she has beaten only a handful of top-
50 players in her career. Daniela would have to have an
exceptionally bad day at the office to lose to her.


2r: I hope and expect that beautiful Maria Elena Camerin will defeat
Emmanuelle Gagliardi in the first round, as Maria Elena is ranked
#53 to Gagliardi's #104, and thrashed her 6-2 6-1 at Tashkent 2005.
Maria Elena is having a solid but unspectacular year, with a
win/loss record of 15:12 (Gagliardi 10:13).

Daniela thrashed Maria Elena 6-2 6-1 in qualifying for Sydney 2002,
and beat Gagliardi 4-6 6-0 6-4 in their only meeting - sf Indian
Wells 2002 (and we all know what Daniela did in the final!).


3r: For once, the draw has been kind to Daniela after she lost in
the third round of six consecutive Grand Slams - a pattern which
changed when Daniela knocked Serena Williams out of the Australian
Open 2006!

Daniela has a 3-2 head-to-head over Nathalie Dechy, but lost 6-1 6-4
to her at Luxembourg 2005. Dechy's win/loss record for 2006 is an
abysmal 3:11, so it's doubtful that she'll even justify her seeding
here.

Catalina Castańo is dangerous on clay, although Daniela beat her 6-4
6-3 at last year's French Open, and there's nothing particularly
scary about her 2006 results apart from a 7-5 6-2 win over Nicole
Vaidišová at Charleston.


4r: Daniela lost to Kim Clijsters at last year's French Open, and
the rematch would take place one round later this year. Daniela has
a 0-7 head-to-head against Clijsters, and their last five matches
have all had dispapsinating scorelines for Daniela. :-O

Clijsters says clay is her least-favourite surface, but she was
runner-up at the French Open 2001 and 2003, and won Warszawa earlier
this month before losing to Dinara Safina in the third round of Rome.

I should like nothing better than to watch Daniela grind Mingin'
Clijsters into the red dirt (and go on to win the title), but
Daniela's best chance is if the feisty Anabel Medina Garrigues can
do the job for her in the third round.
