ACURA CLASSIC (San Diego, California, hard, WTA Tier I)
=============
First round
-----------
Mouthwatering match:
+ DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [14] d. Maria Kirilenko, 7-6 (7/5) 6-1
I gleaned the following information from the scoring-thread at:
http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=182011&page=40
The radio-commentator, who left after the first set, is said to have
described it as an unforced-error fest between two very attractive
young ladies.
First Set

HANTUCHOV * * *@ @___@ 7(7)
KIRILENKO _* *__@ @*@_ 6(5)
The match started at 21:55 PDT with Daniela serving first. Maria
held for 1-1, but only after 40/0 to 40/40. Daniela holding easily
in the early stages, broke for 4-2 after Maria missed an easy
forehand at 30/30. But Maria broke back for 3-4. Daniela
reestablished her break after a game of EIGHT deuces, when Maria
double-faulted on the second break-point.
Thus Daniela served for the first set at 5-3: 30/15, 30/40, ad M, ad
D, ad D, ad M, ad M, Maria broke back after saving two set-points.
Maria held for 5-5, and broke to 15 for 6-5.
Maria's turn to serve for the first set: 0/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30
(set-point) - Daniela saved it with a forehand winner - 40/40, ad D,
ad D, Maria double-faulted.
6-6 tiebreak: Daniela 2/0*, *2/2, 3/2*, 3/3*, *3/4, *4/4, 5/4*,
5/5*, *6/5, Daniela won the first set 7-6 (7/5) at 23:12.

Daniela broke to love for 1-0, then raced through the second set
as "Kirilenko folded like a deck of cards" [TFan1156]. Daniela broke
to love again at the end to win 7-6 (7/5) 6-1 at 23:43.

Second round
------------
- DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [14] lt. Ai Sugiyama, 7-5 4-6 6-2
It was at this tournament three years ago that Daniela lost to
Sugiyama in the second round when the umpire effectively
disqualified Daniela by docking a point when she took too long to
serve when facing match-point.
Daniela and Sugiyama are good friends and doubles-partners - and
that's what worried me about Daniela having to play her in singles.
The match started at 12:05 PDT, and I followed it at the following
scores-thread:

CONCHITA MARTÍNEZ/VIRGINIA RUANO PASCUAL [3], 6-7 (7/9) 6-1 7-5
We missed Championship-Point on Ai's serve at 5-3 (40/30) in the
third, and according to a source who saw the match, we missed four
Championship-Points altogether! ':-(
The match started at 16:44 PDT. I followed it on the barely adequate
scoreboard at www.acuraclassic.com, and the following scores-thread:

First Set

HANT/SUGI * * *@*____@ 7(9)
MART/RUAN _* *___*@*@_ 6(7)
Daniela and Martínez usually serve first in their respective
partnerships, so let's assume that they did so here.
With service-games getting closer and `deucier' as the match
unfolded, Daniela and Ai had to recover from 0/30 to hold for 3-2.
Then we broke for 4-2 (first break-point was at 30/40, then the
Spaniards had a game-point, then we broke after the second deuce).
Ruano Pascual serving to stay in the first set at 2-5: 15/0, 15/15,
40/15, held.
Daniela serving for the first set at 5-3: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30, 30/30,
30/40 (BP), broken. Dani loves to choke! ':-(
Martínez serving to stay in the first set at 4-5: 15/0, 15/15,
30/15, 30/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad Martínez, held.
Sugiyama serving 5-5: 0/15, 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad
Spaniards, broken.
Ruano Pascual serving for the first set at 6-5: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30,
30/30, 30/40, 40/40, scoreboard froze... broken!
6-6 tiebreak (us/them): 1/0*, 1/1*, 1/5*, *3/5, 3/6* (3 SPs to
them) -> *6/6, 7/6* (SP to us), 7/7*, *8/7, we won the first set 7-6
(9/7) at 18:02 (78 minutes!).
The pattern of games in the first set was identical to Daniela's
first set against Maria Kirilenko (except that Daniela and Maria
exchanged breaks in the 7th and 8th games to put Daniela 5-3 up).
Second Set
----------
HANT/SUGI _____*_ 1
MART/RUAN *@*@* * 6
We wasted 2 BPs in the first game; the Spaniards held after 3
deuces, then broke us to 30 for 2-0. We were broken again for 4-0
after a marathon-game of five deuces, 3 saved BPs and 2 missed GPs.
Daniela serving to stay in the second set at 0-5: 30/0, 30/30,
40/30, held.
Ruano Pascual serving for the second set at 5-1: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30,
40/30 (SP), 40/40, our ad (BP), Deuce #2, our ad (BP #2), Deuce #3
, our ad (BP #3), Deuce #4, their ad (SP #2), Martínez and Ruano
Pascual won the second set 6-1 at 18:48.
Third Set
---------
HANT/SUGI __*@*@ @____ 5
MART/RUAN @*____@_@*@* 7
Sugiyama served first, and was broken to 30. Martínez held to love
for 2-0. Daniela saved BP at 30/40 to hold for 1-2, then we broke
Ruano Pascual to 30 for 2-2!
Sugiyama held for 3-2, despite 40/15 -> 40/40. Martínez then
suffered 40/15 -> 40/40 on her own serve, and we broke for 4-2.
Daniela served at 4-2 (40/30), but was broken back. But then we
broke Ruano Pascual to 30 for 5-3.
Sugiyama serving for the match at 5-3: 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30
(CP), 40/40, ad Spaniards (BP), broken!
Martínez serving to stay in the match at 4-5: scoreboard froze...
held.
Daniela serving 5-5: 0/40 (3 BPs), broken.
Ruano Pascual serving for the match at 6-5: 40/15 (2 CPs),
Martínez/Ruano Pascual won 6-7 (7/9) 6-1 7-5 at 19:57 (3h13m).

JPMORGAN CHASE OPEN (Los Angeles, California, hard, WTA Tier II)
===================
(1r) DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [9] bye
(2r) DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [9] v ((1r) Marta Domachowska v Angela
Haynes [Q])
Daniela was moved in the draw to replace VERA ZVONARËVA [7], who
withdrew with the left-ankle sprain she suffered at San Diego (a
real blow to her, to the tournament, and to my fanship-interest in
the tournament).
Daniela's move avoids a dangerous second round against Peng,Shuai -
the Selesian player who upset Kim Clijsters last week - and projects
a mouthwatering quarter-final against Maria Sharapova, who would
become world number one if she beat Daniela in that match.
