BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC
(Stanford, California, USA, hard, WTA Tier II)
========================
First round
-----------
+ Daniela Hantuchová d. Alexandra Stevenson [WC], 6-2 6-1
Daniela: "Right from the beginning, I felt like I had control of the
match. I think I played smart and consistent, keeping my mistakes to
a low level. It's also nice to see her back. It's hard to be off so
long, and it will take her time to get used to it again. With her I
knew I didn't have to go for it too much. There's no pressure on me
and I can just work on my game. I can enjoy myself on the court with
no expectations."
Stevenson: "You have to be optimistic or you'd never be able to go
through the rehabilitation I had to go through. I'm at 85 percent
now, but my [right] arm is getting stronger every day. I got through
the whole match; that was good. I was expecting in my head for it to
be a good match, but my ball was just floating. I have to be patient
and realise it's going to take a little time."
Daniela won in just 51 minutes.

Second round
------------
+ Daniela Hantuchová d. Meghann Shaughnessy [Q], 6-4 3-6 6-1
From http://www.wtatour.com/newsroom/stories/NewsArticle_7669_rx.asp
>>>
In the only match between unseeded players, former Top 5 player
Daniela Hantuchová defeated 2001 Stanford semifinalist Meghann
Shaughnessy 64 36 61 in one hour, 59 minutes. The first two sets
were each decided by key breaks of serve, with the 22-year-old
Hantuchová gaining the break in the fifth game of the first set and
the 26-year-old Shaughnessy breaking in the eighth game of the
second. The 24th-ranked Slovak got off to an inspired start in the
third set, however, surging ahead 5-0 on the strength of two breaks
before serving out the match in the seventh game. Hantuchová's
dominant third-set performance included a 75% first serve
percentage, winning over half of the points on Shaughnessy's serve,
and dropping just four of 20 points on her own serve. As a
punctuation to her second win in three career meetings over the 69th-
ranked American qualifier, she fired four aces in the final four
points of the match.
"I was a little tired in the second set and it was tough to break
her," said Hantuchová on the see-saw match. "In the third, I tried
to be solid and calm. I have been serving pretty well lately – I've
been working on it a lot. Serves and returns are major keys to the
game.
"I'm looking forward to the next match."

More Daniela: "On the last the one, I just said 'Go for it'. I been
playing better on the big points."

Quarter-finals
--------------
- Daniela Hantuchová lt. KIM CLIJSTERS [4], 6-3 6-1
The match was closer than the scoreline implies, apparently. The
first set lasted more than an hour, but Clijsters was patient, error-
free, and won a lot of long games. And she went on to beat Venus
Williams 7-5 6-2 in the final.
Clijsters: "She started serving really well, making a lot of first
serves. To keep the pressure on her, I was mixing up my shots and
focusing on my return game. I saw the difference in her attitude in
the second set. Daniela let a few go at the end, and maybe it shows
she didn't what to do anymore."

Doubles: First round
--------------------
+ VERA ZVONARËVA/ELENA LIKHOVTSEVA [2] d.
Daniela Hantuchová/Ai Sugiyama, 6-3 7-5
I was looking forward to a Daniela v Bepa match in the second round
of singles - they have *never* played each other in singles, and
there seems to be a conspiracy to keep them apart! ;-)
Bepa was one point away from making it happen when she held match-
point against Meghann Shaughnessy in the first round! ':-(
Bepa and Elena went on to reach the doubles final (which they lost
6-3 7-5).

First-round draw:
* DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [14] v Maria Kirilenko
What a mouthwatering match! :-) Daniela is a member of my eternal
fanship, while I am a demi-fan of Maria. When they met at Tokyo in
February, Daniela won 4-6 6-0 6-2.
