Women's Singles
===============
First round
-----------
+ DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [20] d. Evgenia Linetskaya, 3-6 6-2 6-2
I watched the first set on BBCi before play got underway on the show-
courts and they stopped showing it. And I only watched it with 50%
concentration because I was having to follow Vera Zvonarëva's live
scores at the same time.
Daniela seemed to be hitting some brilliant shots whilst being
unsure of her tactics for grasscourt singles, while Linetskaya, who
studied psychology at university in Moscow for three years, was
steely and more consistent. Daniela really did look to be going out
of the Championships at the end of the first set against the
dangerous Russian.
Linetskaya didn't seem as objectionable as when I watched her in
person at Birmingham - or rather, heard her annoying grunt (I am a
fan of Monica Seles and Maria Sharapova) reverberating around the
grounds! She actually looked quite cute and cuddlesome on TV.
BBCi returned to the match to show Linetskaya serving to stay in the
match - unsuccessfully - at 2-5 in the third, at the same time as
Nuria Llagostera Vives was doing likewise in the second set against
Maria Sharapova. Daniela broke to take the match more quickly than
Maria did, and the smile on Daniela's face was wonderful to behold.
