77. Julia Vakulenko [Q] v Tathiana Garbin
79. Lucie Šafár'ová v MARY PIERCE [12] (both nice, but my loyalty
is with Mary)
81. VENUS WILLIAMS [14] v Eva Birnerová [LL]
83. Nicole Pratt v L'udmila Cervanová (pod'me L'udmila!)
85. Meilen Tu [Q] v Shahar Peer
87. Evgenia Linetskaya v DANIELA HANTUCHOVÁ [20] (pod'me Daniela!)
89. MARION BARTOLI [29] v Rika Fujiwara (allez Marion!)
91. Ashley Harkleroad [Q] v Jill Craybas
93. Mara Santangelo [Q] v Tatiana Poutchek [Q]
95. Angela Haynes v SERENA WILLIAMS [4]
Linetskaya is a very tough first-round draw for Daniela, having
given Maria Sharapova an almighty scare in the first round of the
French Open (Linetskaya had a point for 4-1 in the third set).
However, Linetskaya is unproven on grass, having failed to qualify
for Wimbledon 2004, and she lost to the adorable Anna Chakvetadze in
the second round of Birmingham last week. Daniela has never played
Linetskaya before.
Second round: Shahar Peer has a 26-10 win/loss record for 2005, but
most of these wins came in qualifying, and she has never played a
professional match on grass before. Meilen Tu is 21-14 for 2005
(including qualifying for Wimbledon), but most of these wins have
been recent, and she has already won six singles matches on grass
this year, which is six more than Daniela. :-(
And then possibly Venus Williams in the third round. Williams has
won four Grand Slam titles including two Wimbledons, and has a 6-0
head-to-head against Daniela, including 2r Wimbledon 2001 (6-3 6-2),
which is when I first ever saw Daniela play and inducted her into my
eternal fanship.
People are writing off Venus as a contender for Grand Slam titles -
she hasn't won one since the US Open 2001, and was embarrassed by 15-
year-old Sesil Karatantcheva at the French Open. But she has a 21-7
win/loss record for 2005, while Daniela's is 14-12, and Venus is
much better on grass than on clay.
And should Daniela pull a stunt and get past Venus, she would likely
face her younger and much better sister in the fourth round:
Australian Open champion Serena Williams. But it would be more
realistic to see Venus and Serena in the Wimbledon arena. :-(
