Daniela atoned for the nightmare of Roland Garros 2004 - when she
lost 6-1 6-3 to Shinobu Asagoe in the first round - with a simple
6-3 6-1 victory over 16-year-old qualifier Michaëlla Krajicek (half-
sister of Wimbledon 1996 men's singles champion Richard Krajicek).

Daniela serving 0-0: 0/15, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30, held.
Krajicek serving 0-1: 0/30, 15/30, 15/40 (2 BPs), 30/40, broken.
Daniela serving 2-0: 0/15, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30, held.
Krajicek serving 0-3: 15/0, 15/15, 40/15, held.
Daniela serving 3-1: 0/30, 15/30, 15/40 (2 BPs) -> 40/40, ad D, held.
A very fine domination of a lesser player by Daniela so far -
cruising first, then recovering from 15/40.
Krajicek serving 1-4: held to love.
Daniela serving 4-2: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30, 30/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad D,
held.
Krajicek serving to stay in the first set at 2-5: 30/0, 30/15,
40/15, held.
Daniela serving for the first set at 5-3: 30/0, 30/15, 40/15,
40/30 (SP), Daniela won the first set 6-3 at 11:47.
It's lucky that Daniela had an early break, because Krajicek has
been holding quite reliably since then. Perhaps Daniela got a bit
complacent on her return-games?
I think the second set could be tougher, with Krajicek having the
advantage of serving first. Daniela needs to keep holding reliably
herself, and have a crack at Krajicek's serve early on, otherwise
Krajicek could put some scoreboard-pressure on her if the match
continues to be serve-dominated.

Krajicek serving 0-0: 15/0, 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.
Daniela serving 1-0: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), broken.
Krajicek serving 1-1: 15/0, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), broken.
Just when I was thinking how refreshing it was to have a match
between two girls who hold serve reliably - even on clay - it
degenerates into a break-and-counterbreak contest!
Daniela serving 2-1: 30/0, 30/15, 40/15, 40/30, held.
Krajicek serving 1-3: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), 40/40,
ad D (BP #2), broken.
No game in this match has had more than one deuce. Krajicek has put
up some resistance, but it's been nice and straightforward for
Daniela up until now.
Daniela serving 4-1: 0/15, 15/15, 30/15, 30/30, 30/40 (BP), 40/40,
ad D, Deuce #2, ad K (BP #2), Deuce #3, ad D, held.
I am the kiss of death! But that's twice in this match now that
Daniela has saved two break-points to hold serve.
Krajicek serving to stay in the match at 1-5: 0/15, 15/15,
15/40 (2 MPs), 30/40, Daniela won 6-3 6-1 at 12:18.
It seems that Daniela's first serve was good today, while her second
serve was a liability. She hit 8 aces and 6 double faults, won 71%
of points when she got her first serve in, but only 37% when she had
to rely on her second serve.
Daniela had a winner:unforced-error ratio of 19:26, which was good
enough against Krajicek's 18:36, but will have to improve if she
meets Kim Clijsters in the third round (who defied a knee-injury
that threatened her participation to thrash Meilen Tu 6-1 6-0).
Having said that, the judgement on which errors are unforced is much
harsher on clay than on grass, so `only' 26 UEs is not that bad.
Daniela broke 5 times from 8 break-points, while Krajicek broke once
from 5.
Daniela will play Catalina Castańo in the second round, who trounced
sexy Denisa Chládková 6-1 6-2. :-( The only time I've seen Castańo
play was when she lost 6-0 6-1 to 47-year-old Martina Navrátilová at
Wimbledon 2004, and Castańo looked like the most incompetent
professional tennis-player I've seen in over a decade. However,
Castańo is a different kettle of fish altogether when she's not on
grass - she took Vera Zvonarëva to three sets in Rome two weeks ago,
and on the hard courts of Miami she beat Patty Schnyder and took a
set off Venus Williams.
