Will Daniela ever win a Grand Slam singles title?   Message List

In 2002, I believed Daniela had a very good chance of winning a
Grand Slam one day (in singles - she already has two in mixed
doubles), and that the only players stopping her were the Williams
sisters (who beat her in three consecutive Grand Slam quarter-finals
from Wimbledon 2002 to the Australian Open 2003).

Daniela's all-court game, her effortless power, her touch and
variety, and her fearless and ambitious shotmaking suggested, in
2002, that she could win a Grand Slam singles title in 2003 or 2004 -
she wasn't yet the finished product in 2002. Of course this dream
quickly faded as she went through the trauma in her personal life,
leading to the well-documented loss of weight and form in 2003.

In 2004, she put her emotional problems behind her and got her old
body back. But she was playing too cautiously then, without much
confidence, and squandering countless opportunities in matches she
should have won.

But the Daniela of 2005 is much more like the Daniela of 2002,
although she hasn't yet rescaled the heights of winning Indian
Wells. Her form and confidence have returned, and she's doing a much
better job of converting her opportunities. She still has a lot of
work to do on her serve to bring it back to its previous best,
though.

I believe Daniela still has a chance of one day becoming a Grand
Slam singles champion, although to be realistic, it's an outside
chance because there are so many tough opponents for her these days -
not least the player who will be dominating the women's game for the
rest of Daniela's career, Maria Sharapova.
