How I would like the podium to look, given this draw:
* Gold: Daniela Hantuchová
* Silver: Anastasia Myskina (or Mary Pierce)
* Bronze: Karolina Šprem (or María Sánchez Lorenzo)
Claudine Schaul is a very favourable draw for Daniela, considering
how many tough opponents there are in women's tennis these days.
There's not too much cause for concern considering most of Schaul's
results this year... except at Strasbourg (on clay), where she
sensationally upset Lindsay Davenport 2-6 6-0 6-3 in the final. I
saw Schaul play at Birmingham and Wimbledon this year, where she
took a serve-and-volley approach to grasscourt tennis... with little
success. I give Daniela a 70% chance of beating her.
Daniela is playing doubles for Slovakia with Janette Husárová. In
the first round they play the Swiss team: Myriam Casanova and Patty
Schnyder.
I can't wait for tomorrow's opening ceremony, trying to spot Daniela
in the Slovak team as I did Karina Habšudová four years ago! And Iva
Majoli! And Iroda Tulyaganova! And (though I didn't spot them in the
opening ceremony, but instead saw them play) Monica Seles and Jelena
Dokic! Athens 2004 sure isn't as exciting as Sydney 2000, with
Daniela as my sole representative this time, so her appearance had
better be worthwhile and generate some TV-footage!
Go on Daniela!
