Subject: Re: [dallascowboysofamerica] (no subject)I have to disagree a bit, I still think that Q. Carter will be back next season. With Henson as the backup, then we are headed for the BIG ONE!!!!!----- Original Message -----From: MsDallas2007@...Sent: Friday, September 03, 2004 8:19 AMSubject: [dallascowboysofamerica] (no subject)I knew back before a game was played Parcells was going to use Romo as a back-up--remember me stating that..? Well Romo will be cut next season...more then likely and Henson will start..that is "if" Vinny Boy can make it through 16 weeks...of brutal pounding and sacks etc-still not convinced on ol Vinny Boy...

Cowboys' needs still appear to be glaring
Secondary, running game remain questionable as the preseason comes to a closing.

The Cowboys are now focused on the regular season.
Are they ready?
Well, that's up to interpretation after Thursday's 24-20 victory against the Kansas City Chiefs in the preseason finale.
The good news is the Cowboys might have found a backup quarterback in second-year player Tony Romo. He completed 12 of 14 passes for 141 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Bryant.
Yet a host of concerns still remains as the Cowboys, who finished the preseason with a 3-1 record, turn their attention toward the Sept. 12 season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.
Holes in the secondary, particularly at right corner and nickel corner, were problems against the Chiefs, as they have been all preseason.
The Cowboys continue to be undone by costly penalties. And the run defense has been run over more often than not.
And veteran running back Eddie George hasn't exactly stirred confidence with his efforts.
"I am glad the practice games are over," coach Bill Parcells said. "But I have to get my team ready for Minnesota. We got a lot of work to do. We got to improve the talent level. Anybody can see that."
With final cuts looming Sunday, Parcells said the team will scan the waiver wire for help.
At present, Pete Hunter and Jemeel Powell are the only options at right cornerback as the team continues to search for a replacement for the departed Mario Edwards, now with Tampa Bay. Hunter is the starter. Powell comes in on passing downs as the right cornerback with Hunter moving inside to the nickel spot.
Neither instilled confidence against a Chiefs offense that played without two of its top three receivers because injury.
The Chiefs burned Hunter for a touchdown in the second quarter, when Todd Collins found Dante Hall on a 12-yard score.
It capped a 12-play, 71-yard drive that might also be remembered by the way backup running back Derrick Blaylock gashed the Cowboys, rushing five times for 25 yards.
On the Chiefs' next drive, rookie receiver Richard Smith torched Powell on a 53-yard touchdown reception. Powell gave up an 89-yard touchdown to the Oakland Raiders two weeks ago and was beaten twice by Tennessee last Monday.
Quarterback Vinny Testaverde wasn't as sharp as he was against the Titans. He completed four of 10 passes for 46 yards and an interception in four series of work with the starters.
Richie Anderson rushed four times for 46 yards in the first half. His 32-yard scamper in the first half led to the Cowboys first touchdown. George got the touchdown on a 3-yard run.
George rushed eight times for eight yards Thursday, giving him 51 yards on 23 carries for the preseason. That number drops to 22 carries for 28 yards if his 23-yard run against the Chiefs isn't included.
"It's a little frustrating, I wanted to get going," George said. "I have to keep at it and keep working."
Rookie Julius Jones missed Thursday's game because of soreness from the Monday game against Tennessee.
Jones has fostered optimism by rushing for 142 yards on 30 carries in the first three games, but his durability remains a question.
Parcells said he not particularly worried about the running game because he has other players who can carry the ball, including Anderson and second-year back Reshard Lee, who took full advantage of
Jones' absence with a strong effort against the Chiefs. He rushed 13 times for 45 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, giving the Cowboys a 24-14 lead.
The backup who took the biggest step forward was Romo. Three weeks ago, making the team was a big question for Romo, who completed 12 of 29 passes for 109 yards with two interceptions in the first three preseason games.
After Thursday, Romo might have passed rookie Drew Henson as the primary backup to Testaverde.
There's no question Romo had his best statistical performance of the preseason. But more important, Romo led the Cowboys to two touchdowns and field goal during his time on the field.
The touchdowns included Bryant's 15-yard reception and Lee's run.
"Romo did a good job tonight," Parcells said. "I am not ready to say who will be number two yet. We will see what is what."
Said Romo: "It's been growing week to week for me. I just let the receivers make plays. I want to help the team win. I will play whatever role the coaches decide."
Henson, the ex-baseball player, was intercepted on his first play and finished with no completions on four attempts.
COWBOYS 24, CHIEFS 20
IN THE KNOW
9 DAYS TO KICKOFF
SEPT. 12 AT MINNESOTA VIKINGS
Who looked good:
Quarterback Tony Romo He likely earned his spot as the backup to Vinny Testaverde.
Running back Richie Anderson If Eddie George continues to struggle, this might be the answer.
Safety Keith Davis Had possibly his best game of the preseason.
Who looked bad:
Receiver Randal Williams Ended a lackluster preseason with a lackluster game.
Running back Julius Jones By not playing, he took a step back in Bill Parcells' mind.
Right cornerbacks Another not so good night from Jemeel Powell and Pete Hunter.
Notable
Richie Anderson's 32-yard run was the longest of the preseason for the Cowboys.
