With Free Agency beginning this morning in a whirlwind, lets take a look at some of the moves teams have made thus far… and where are we in the scheme?
If you take a look around the division, things are shaping up pretty well for the Giants and Eagles. The Iggles have a ton of cap space this off-season (when do they not?), and are looking to take Bentley off the market for our consideration. They likely won’t resign John Runyan but along with Bentley could sign former Jets C Kevin Mawae to fortify the middle. It would certainly make life easier on the Cowboys… it would likely force them into either finding somebody cheaper or draft well. Personally, I think this gives us all the ammo we need to give Al Johnson his final chance in the middle. Without Gurode pushing him for time, who knows how he’ll respond? I think the Cowboys (and us fans) owe it to him to give him a shot. The Eagles could also take a chance on a wide out like Randle El, who is on the market… now.
The Giants are also looking pretty good. Following the retirement of S Brent Alexander and the likely release of CB Will Allen, bringing in Sam Madison (for cheap, too) was a great move. It should solidify what we thought that secondary would be without all of those injuries. And with that offense, we all know a scary defense could be bad news for us.
Around the NFL, the Browns inked former Pat WR David Givens and Ravens P David Zastudil and that is about all we’ve got at the moment (although there is some speculation as to whether those moves actually happened). The Cowboys will be making some big splashes this week, so don’t expect other NFC East teams to steal our thunder as fans. Personally, whether I like it or not, I have a strong, strong feeling the Cowboys are #1 in the TO sweepstakes and are going to take advantage. The only other team in the running (publicly, anyway) is the KC Chiefs, and according to GM Carl Peterson, TO would only be welcome there if he was signed to an incredibly stipulation-laden contract. When coupled with the fact that BP and Jerry have suddenly become very complementary regarding TO and wide outs in general, I think the writing is on the wall. Now we all know TO, so the Boys might find some hitches in the signing process, but I truly believe he is there for the taking.
Jason Fabini is another guy that seems like a lead pipe cinch in Dallas next season, even moreso than TO. The pieces just all seem to fit together. While I think the Cowboys could be better served waiting out a better prospect, its hard to argue with an affordable tackle who will allow the brass to spend cash and time elsewhere in the draft.
