Rumors ‘R Us and Combine Fever   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #10328 of 12018 |

I truly hate indulging some of the rumors that come across the wire as viable options, but I suppose as “the signing time” draws nearer there really isn't anything else to expound upon. Here are a few being discussed by Cowboys Nation right now:

- Wait for Terrell Owens to hit the open market and pounce with an ungodly amount of cash.

- Trade some combination of La’Roi Glover, Greg Ellis and draft picks to Denver for both of their first round picks (thus allowing us to draft a future cornerstone with the Redskins’ pick and lord it over them for the rest of time).

- Lure a big name kicker out of the Lions’ den and onto the friendly confines of the Texas Stadium fieldturf.

And this is a personal favorite of mine…

- Take up the Redskins’ on their trade offer for Patrick Ramsey.

The big news over last weekend was the combine and the news/results it generated. Here are three notable players the Cowboys might be interested in and how they performed last weekend.

Chad Jackson - WR, Florida - You could easily argue that nobody helped their draft stock in the combine quite like Jackson, especially since his position is seeing such a down year draft-wise. He could have easily elevated himself above Santonio Holmes with his 4.32 40 time, and even if he technically hasn't he still provides an interesting option for the Cowboys should they choose to take a shot at a wide out with #18. He had a great weekend in terms of hand-eye coordination as well and had a pretty easy time hauling in all of his catches. A name to keep in mind for sure. I think most of us have kept wide receivers in the far back of our minds in lieu of more important things, but who knows? If a guy like Jackson steps up like that, it might be worth a shot.

Manny Lawson - OLB/DE, NC State - 4.41 40 time… that is all you need to know about Manny. At 241 he isn't exactly testing the limits of his size, and while that might be a problem for Bill’s 3-4 it sure isn't a problem for me. While this years’ combine very likely vaulted Lawson above the Cowboys’ reach, it is interesting to speculate about a Lawson-Ware combo on the edge rush. The Cowboys clearly need MLB before OLB, but sometimes it is worth it to simply draft the best player on the board, and Lawson would likely be one of those cases. All that said, I’ll donate my left arm to charity if Lawson made it down to 18 after his weekend.

Mike Kudla - OLB/DE, Ohio State - At 6′3, 265, Kudla is more of Bill’s prototype 3-4 ‘backer. He made one concession in size with Ware, but I doubt he'd be willing to do it again on the other side, especially with how small and/or inexperienced the Cowboys are in the middle of the field. That lends itself to Kudla’s cause. He's slower than Lawson but he makes up for that with ferocious strength (repped 45 times in the combine) and it has been rumored that he can still run the 40 in the low 4.5 range. Again, if the Cowboys are looking to shy away from the middle and strengthen the coverage schemes/blitz packages from the outside, they cant go wrong with Kudla.

I’ll report on a few more guys (i.e. offensive linemen) when more reports trickle out of Indy.
