The Cowboys signed their first significant free agent
this off-season, inking a one-year deal Wednesday with
defensive tackle Leonardo Carson.
Carson, a four-year veteran, joined the Cowboys Oct.
18 and spent eight games in the tackle-rotation before
going on injured reserve with a torn triceps muscle
Dec. 10.
Carson signed a one-year deal worth $535,000 and will
count less than $600,000 with his minimal signing bonus.
The 6-2, 305-pound tackle became a contributor in a
limited role, recording 21 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
However, Carson, who was released by the Chargers after
three seasons and five games on Oct. 14, still has legal
matters to resolve. Carson was arrested on Aug. 21 in
Mobile, Ala., for investigation of first-degree burglary
and second-degree kidnapping. A civil suit has since
been filed against Carson, who has an expected court
date this spring.
But by signing the defensive tackle, the Cowboys might not have to
address the position any more in free agency. With four-time Pro
Bowler La'Roi Glover returning, along with youngsters Willie Blade,
Daleroy Stewart and Jermaine Brooks, the Cowboys can likely turn
their attention to other areas until the draft.
While the Cowboys might not sign another veteran defensive tackle,
they could have interest in one come draft day. Remember last year,
the Cowboys had strong interest in drafting Kentucky defensive tackle
DeWayne Robertson, who was picked fourth overall by the Jets. The
Cowboys then took Terence Newman with the fifth pick. The Cowboys
then proceeded through the entire draft without taking a defensive
tackle.
