Brandon,
I am pretty sure that the new REI is going up between the Office Depot and
the Circuit City - Southwest corner of Hwy 249 and FM 1960 Intersection.

Crew,
I have a free Saturday morning coming up. If anyone is interested in
getting their hands dirty (and riding!) please shoot me a line. Also,
has anyone heard about the new REI in our area? I believe it is
supposed to be built near the intersection of 249 & Greens Rd.
btw, as you make your way to retention pond and ride over the log in
the middle of the trail you will notice missing bark on the pine tree
to the right of the trail. ;) It was't pretty! But I escaped with
minimal damage.
Regards,
Brandon

To paraphrase Kevin, the direction to ride is "around" the pond. Either
direction. I usually park and ride back to the end, taking a right and
riding the single track through the woods, exiting to the detention pond,
and going left (clockwise). Take the perimeter trail (freshly cut) into the

I think the trail you are referring to in the 2nd question is the one that
leads to the Gully -and back to Cypreswood drive. It has at least 2 exits to
the north side of the detention pond.
Thursday I hope to be at the trail head at 6PM to do some more work. I'd
like to cut out the downed tree along the creek. It's a long way to carry a
chain saw.
Jer
Ride any direction you want - I went round it 3 times last night altogether - I am now fitting it into my total round of the whole trail. There are no trails in the adjacent woods yet, but we hope to do the survey / plotting work for this soon.

Helmets off to the weedwhacker king! It has been a long, long time since I have been able to ride the rentention pond! So a couple of questions: What direction should you ride the pond? (All I saw was the path starting at the end of the "access" road) On the far side of the pond, there is a trail in the forest that runs parallel to the pond trail - does this go anywhere?

Wow, sounds like some of us have been busy!!!! The rest of us who
would have loved to be out there sweating and fighting the bugs are
sorry we couldn't make it. But thank you guys who did VERY MUCH.
We did ride this weekend on Sat morning and I remember now why I
love that place so much! Please keep passing on possible work days
and one of these times it may work for more of us.
Doesn't GHORBA have any ideas on mapping?
Thanks again!!!!!

Hey y'all: Please make a point to ride around the detention pond on the west side of the trail area. Jerry Gruss, using the heavy duty trimmer borrowed from GHORBA, has singlehandedly cleared the trail right around the pond. He has also made a new route around the collapsed wall at the western extremity. The ride around the pond now makes for an interesting ride. If you ride to the trail area from the west along Cypresswood, or down Spring Gully, then ride down Spring Gully (on the eastern bank) and continue into the woods; as you close the pond, you can go through straight ahead and follow the trail around the north side of the pond, or you can continue to the right through some more of the woods and go around the west and south perimeter of the pond. Either way, you can ride right around. At the south east corner, the trail goes back into the woods and joins the main trail area at the bottom of "T.C. Jester", the main access route. Of course you can do the reverse from the main trail area. Either way, please ride this area as often as possible to keep the way clear.
Thankyou Jerry for your hard work. For the rest of you: please thank Jerry - buy him a pint when you see him! Thanks also to GHORBA for the loan of the equipment. Please thank GHORBA by joining - its only $20 - if more people join GHORBA, perhaps they will have more funds to buy more equipment.
I spent a little time with Jerry yesterday to see how things were going. We noticed that the woods to the north of the pond are ripe for new trails - this is Flood District owned land, dry, with some contour and nicely wooded to make nice twisty trails. Our next project is to develop a trail through this area and also to cut trails into the pond wall to provide some elevation change. In September we'll try to have a small party to flag the route ahead of actual building work. Other projects which we hope to address:
1. Mapping. We need a map fairly urgently. Brandt tried with GPS, but was unsuccessful. Anyone care to try some simple manual surveying techniques, using reference points such as the entrance and the pipelines?
2. Erosion control. After mapping, we can identify re-routes and start to close off over-used routes to allow recovery.
3. Drainage. Work on the low spots to avoid mud-fests. If this is controlled, it will help to prevent "spider web" effect as people forge new trails around muddy spots.
4. Land ownership: I will chase up HCFCD in September to see how the land purchase issue is going. I'm waiting for the new Precinct 4 parks director to be appointed before we also start on a political approach to promote public trail sponsorship and access.
We will try to start some weekend work parties to allow more people to participate. We now have some clearer goals to achieve, which will allow more organized work groups. Keep spreading the word when you are down there - the more the merrier. We've still only got about 28 people signed up to the Yahoo Group, so there's still quite a few trail users MIA.
I was working with the GHORBA whacker on the trail again this afternoon, and had a very scary situation. Not the kind involving naked teenagers with video cameras, or the kind where someone steals your back-pack, but the kind involving borrowed equipment failure. Luckily it was nothing some TLC was able to resolve and the whacker is functioning fine again. Before the mishap, I was able to complete the trimming of the overgrown trails around the detention pond (to the right at the end of the 'head' of the trail). Please try out and use this section as it needs use before it will be (more) fun.
Drop me a line if you have any comments. If you prefer a personal note instead of the user group, I can be emailed at jerryg98@....
Yes, I went back with the GHORBA whacker this morning and got much farther. I ran out of time and string at the same time. But the trail is open from the woods along the creek and now all along the south side of the pond to the last climb before entering the woods again. I slightly modified the drop at the end. Instead of heading down the steep hill and ending in a huge pile of sand, I turned it left and up a little bump, followed by a short drop, and in a few feet a bump back up. These bumps are mostly sand deposits and will wear down quickly from any riding. The positioning of these bumps at the bottom of the hill should be perfect places to practice end-o-ing. Depending on riding style, the sand can be a great place to land, or break ones neck. I rode it this evening and prefer it to the sand pit. Once it wears in, it should be (more) fun.
I hope to get more string and continue around the pond this weekend. -Is there still a trail the entire way around the pond, or shall I just try to clear a place around it? I didn't look very closely, but didn't notice any signs of the trail that used to circle the entire pond. Any input would be appreciated.
Great stuff Jerry. I am back in town Sunday morning, and would be
willing to help you complete the job on Sunday afternoon or Monday
evening.

Thanks Jerry for weed wacking the trail. I hope you didn't get too much poison ivey! I would like to get the thursday evening NWCC ride going again and hope to get some folks to join me.

I can be there in the morning - as long as the weather holds up. The

Reminder to all who want to help - I'm sending this message out to the Yahoo Group as well as my e-mail group of those who have been involved in the past - still a few of you not signed up to the Yahoo Group. Meet at the trail head 6pm (Cypresswood Drive & T.C. Jester). If you are running late, don't worry, we'll be out there - call my cell 281 546 7164 to catch up with us.

Great reminder Brandon. I haven't ridden there for a while, so it would be a good idea to get there early and try to decide what area needs the most attention. Kevin already suggested working on the overgrown areas around the detention pond. I be there by 6, and hope to make it early enough for a quick look-see.
A trail work-party is scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday) evening at 6.
I plan to ride beginning at 5-5:15 if anyone is interested.

Sent this to the wrong group.....but some of you in the CC may not yet have joined the Yahoo group - see the address above and make sure you are signed up, since that is now the primary forum for exchanging news and information.
I've been out of town and got my first ride in 3 weeks at Cypresswood. Trail looks in great condition, and with the nice evening weather its been a pleasure to ride. Last night I talked to about 6 riders - most of whom are regulars, but have never heard of our organizational efforts. I encouraged them to get signed up to this user group. It would be very helpful if we all try to talk to other riders on the trail and spread the news about our joint efforts - it seems there are still a lot of people to reach, so don't be shy!
I had 4 responses to the work party date on Tuesday (8-17). Let's meet at the trail head at 6pm. We can cut back some vines and make some new plans. A Saturday after the weekend of the 14th is also workable. Anyone willing to work a Saturday? I haven't been there, but imagine it has dried out over the last week.

Here is recent correspondence I had with Rachel Decker of HCFCD requesting an update on the land purchase issue. Basically, nothing new to report, but I'll stay in touch with them. I need to follow up on the MUD's that are planning trails on HCFCD property.

Hi Rachel: Its been a while since our last correspondence, and I was wondering if you could do a little investigation about the status of the purchase of the cypresswood trail land by HCFCD. The last we heard, the attorneys were doing some hard bargaining. [Rachel Decker (Flood Control)] The status hasn't changed. On the same vein, are you able to find out the status of land acquisitions by the engineering department for the extension of T.C. Jester?[Rachel Decker (Flood Control)] No updates here either.
I was also thinking that there must be other conservation orders in progress along Cypress Creek - would you be able to find out about this?[Rachel Decker (Flood Control)] No conservation easements that I am aware of, although we are working with MUDs upstream and downstream - not contiguous - that are interested in doing trails. (Key Map 369 and 333 areas).
We are working towards making an approach to our political reps, particularly Commissioner Eversole, with a view to allowing the county to work with you for the formation of "greenways" and to review the trail adoption rules. Before contacting Comm. Eversole, I would like to find out the latest information.[Rachel Decker (Flood Control)] Joe Turner, who was the Director of the Pct. 4 Parks system, has left the County to Direct the City's Parks Dept. The Pct. has not yet hired a new parks administrator. I would wait until they have someone in place, and you have had a chance to meet that person.
Since the meeting in April, I have been active, with my friends who also use the Cypresswood Trail, to informally organize ourselves to maintain the trail system. Many of our supporters are people not previously aligned with any of the existing clubs or community groups. The response and support has been very good, and I think we have a good example of "grass roots" volunteerism. [Rachel Decker (Flood Control)] Great! We'll get something done - I'm sure!
But, its time to move on, so I look forward to hearing from you.

Hey,
I rode
Cypresswood trails today and found the trail terribly wet. The section along
the creek is rideable, but that's all. Apparently it was worse earlier in the
week. It really needs to dry out before it is ridden. Also the rain has allowed
much growth, and some trimming is in order in several sections. A few climbs
are getting rutted out and could use either re-routing, or serious attention.
I would very much
like to organize another work day. How about the third week of August ?
Perhaps Tuesday 8-17-2004. If you can attend, or would prefer
another date, please drop me a line at jerryg98@...
and I'll try to pick a date/time that accommodates most. The work we'll do will
depend on how many people plan to help. Is anyone willing to work some Saturday
or Sunday morning?
The trails are very good if you are running along the creek, and in the bowl area. I run the
trails in different directions if it is wet. Still a good work out. Kevin Usai.
